Celtic move two points clear at the top of SPL

Ledley scores

A Joe Ledley header gave Celtic all three points in the Old Firm gave allowing them to move two points clear.

It was a game that was in doubt at one point with the wind causing some problems within the stadium. Celtic would be more pleased to have got the game underway as they dominated almost from start to finish.

The first half was notable for a major talking point when a Lee Wallace saw a header saved by Forster at the back post. TV pictures showed afterwards the ball had crossed the line but the assistant ref was unsighted by Aloko who had put the cross in.

This, of course, will spark off the debate about whether we should be introducing video review, this following an afternoon of discussion around summer football.

Celtic took the early in the second half when Ledley headed in a corner from the right at the back post.

Rangers never managed to get back in to the game, with Lafferty and Jelavic being well marshalled by the Celtic defence, and never really getting a look in. While at the other end Forrest was causing all sorts of problems for the Rangers rear guard.

McCoist will be disappointed with his side’s reaction, as well as being concerned about having only won 4 games in their last 8 which has allowed Celtic to close what was a 15 point gap at one time.

He will also be looking to add to his squad next month given the effect Naismith’s injury has had on his squad, with Aluko looking short of quality at this level. He will also have to look at why Ortiz, McKay and Bedora have contributed little after joining in the last transfer window.

While Lennon can look forward to Izaguerre coming back and having a relatively settled squad for the rest of the season, this could see the Parkhead side open a clear gap and end Rangers run of titles.

It was an exciting game played at great pace in a howling gale, which at times did cause problems for the defences and keepers.
