Media pundits making the case for Rangers in SPL

Today's papers have started to help Rangers circle the wagons ahead of the July 4th vote on the newco's share transfer in the SPL. Pundits have been wheeled out to make the case for the newco to be in the SPL.

Now that Walter Smith has done his final piece of “walking away” the media have pulled out a number of pundits to convince us to allow the Rangers newco to be allowed into the SPL.

The Scottish Sun has a line from former Rangers full back Eric Caldow which will upset fans of every other club inScotlandand explains the lack of humility and dignity at Ibrox.

He said, “Rangers and Celtic are the only two teams in Scottish football. The other teams won’t be able to win the league.”

If this is truly the case we should re-construct the leagues to allow them to have a top league of two and play each other 36 times. This would mean the rest could go ahead and have a competitive League under that.

This is an attitude that has killed the competition in the Scottish game for the best part of a century. The current Rangers situation gives us a chance to make sure there are more than two teams inScotlandcapable of competing and making our game better at all levels.

Then in the Record formerGretnamanager David Irons says it would be ridiculous if Rangers were relegated to the Third Division. As usual this is sloppy reporting as they would not be getting relegated to the Third Division. This would mean they would not be accepted into the SPL and then seeking to apply for entry into the SFL.

He saysGretnawere relegated to the First Division but that had nothing to do with their administration, that was as a result of finishing bottom of the SPL. The SFL then punished them by relegating them to the Third Division.

This is a completely different case to Rangers newco altogether and the two cases should not be compared directly.

He assertion that it would be ridiculous to have Rangers in the Third Division is based upon having one full time team competing with nine part time clubs. Well I am pretty certain that is how Livingston andGretnamade their way through the divisions.

I am sure we will have plenty more of this type of stuff in the papers in the coming weeks ahead of the July 4^th meeting of the SPL, but it would be good if we could have some balance and accuracy in the comments.
