Scottish Football Its Not All about the Old Firm

Scott Burns of the Scottish Daily Express has put together an excellent book detailing the trophy wins from non Old Firm teams since the 1980s.

The book starts with the dominance of the Cups and League in the 1980s by the New Firm whenAberdeenand Dundee Utd were the dominant sides in the country.

He has managed to get quotes from most of the prominent characters who made things happen during this time. Some of the highlights are the inside story of the aftermath ofAberdeen’s Cup Winner’s Cup win from Mark McGhee. Similarly from Dundee Utd winning the League and walking back from Dens to Tannadice and getting applause from both sets of fans.

There are also chapters on the Cup winning exploits of Motherwell in 1991, Raith Rovers League Cup triumph and of course, Dundee Utd’s first Cup win with some entertaining stuff from Manager Ivan Golac.

Burns has also covered the exploits ofInvernesswho made headlines despite not winning anything but by creating the best newspaper headline of all time, “Super Caley Go Ballistic Celtic are Atrocious.”

A common theme throughout the book is former Old Firm players saying how winning cups with a Non Old Firm team was a highlight of their career, in large past down to being able to parade the cup through the home town. Something they could never do with Celtic or Rangers.

The book is up to date with the last season’s exploits ofKilmarnockwinning the League Cup and Hearts Scottish Cup win are included.

This is an excellent book giving an insight to what the players and managers involved were thinking at the time and how they made it happen.
