Arsenal were the better team with Bergkamp and Henry missing chances. Liverpool come out in the second half with a more positive attitude and started creating. Steven Gerrard was an influencial figure in The Pools' midfield. Michael Owen had a half chance when Riise crossed the ball but Owen screwed it wide. El Hadji Diouf had a couple of chances to and he seen his edge of the box volley go seething over the bar.

Arsenal started to go forward more and missed even more good chances but finally Gilberto Silva scored from the edge of the box mid way through the second half. Impressive performances from Gerrard, Riise, Henchoz, Dudek and diouf were the plus points from this game that Houlier can take.

Liverpool kick off the season next week with an away trip to Aston Villa.
