Liverpool got off to a winning start today with a 1-0 victory away to Aston Villa. John Arne Riise scored the 47th minute goal to split the teams.

The goal tally could have been different for both teams as Villa hit the post and bar while Liverpool missed a penalty.

Both teams had chances but a Delaney slip from a through ball by Danny Murphy let Riise in to slot home and give Liverpool and Houlier a dream start to the new season.

'The Pool' had a penalty in the 79th minute when Steven Gerrard was took down in the box by Lee Hendrie. Owen stepped up confidently but the penalty was straight down the middle as the superb Villa keeper Enckelman saved with his feet.
