However, he remains confident that Gerard Houllier's men will finish the job off in Germany.

He told the club's official website: "Bayer Leverkusen played a good game, a very strong game. They caused us problems but we defended really well and they found it hard to create chances against us.

"Obviously it's better for us to go over there with a one goal lead than if the score had been goalless.

"They have to look for a goal now, otherwise they are out of the competition and so there is going to be some pressure on them.

"We have shown on numerous occasions over the past couple of seasons that we can go away from home in Europe and get the result we need.

"If we don't lose next week then we are through. That's all that matters."

Litmanen refused to be drawn on a potential semi-final clash with Manchester United.

He said: "I look no further than the next game - and that happens to be against Leverkusen next week.

"That is the only match we are concentrating on at the moment. We will talk about the semi-final if we get there."
