Owen trained alone but Houlier is convinced that he can return to play against Real.
"Michael trained but we want to be cautious because of the injury he suffered in the World Cup," he commented.
"I don't think Jamie Carragher will take part, but he (Owen) won't be far from getting involved and that's about it," continued Houllier.
"We are just about up to schedule, we have a few niggles, but things will be all right," said Houllier.
Steven Gerrard trained with the first team and looked untroubled by the groin injury which ruled him out of the World Cup.
Liverpool and Real will open the exciting four-team event, which also features big clubs like AC Milan and Bayern Munich and stretches over the next three days in Madrid to celebrate Real's centenary.
