Steven Gerrard up for Award

Steven Gerrard has been nominated for the Laureus Awards in the World Newcomer of the Year category. Read on to find out more.....

The Liverpool and England midfielder is up against Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Juan Pablo Montoya and Andy Roddick.

Gerrard is the only footballer to be nominated in any of the award's seven categories.

Elsewhere, three-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and four-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher are among the nominees for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award.

In the equivalent award for women, tennis stars Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams and golfer Annika Sorenstam are among those nominated.

Other honours to be presented include Team of the Year, Comeback of the Year, Sportsman of the Year with a Disability, and Alternative Sportsperson of the Year.

The winners of what organizers call the "Oscars of Sport" will be announced May 14 in Monte Carlo.
