Nolan Turns Down Ireland Chance

Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton has admitted defeat in trying to persuade Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan to change his international allegience.

The 24-year old Wanderers skipper was of interest to Staunton following a tip off from Trotters full back and current Eire cap Joey O'Brien and the Greens manager even sent scouts to see the player in action for his club on numerous occasions.

Nolan had already been capped by England at youth and U21 level but the recent international switch by Manchester City's Ben Thatcher gave other players a chance of changing their international preference.

However, Staunton has now confirmed that Nolan will not be pulling on the Republic jersey.

"Kevin Nolan won't be playing for Ireland. The issue has gone." said the former Liverpool and Aston Villa star following his nations 4-0 defeat against Holland in midweek
