Worthington Makes Wanderers Return

Goalscoring legend Frank Worthington has been named as the new president of the Bolton Wanderers former players association.

The former England international was idolised at Burnden Park during his two year spell with the Wanderers in the late 1970's and now he returns to the club in a new ambassadorial role which was previously held by Gudni Bergsson since 2003.

Signed from Leicester City in September 1977 for a then club record £90,000, Worthington helped Bolton gain promotion to the top flight as champions during his first season at the club and responded in the following campaign by netting an impressive 24 goals in the First Division to earn himself the Golden Boot award.

His career has seen him travel the length and breadth of the country at various clubs and he was still playing well into his forties. In 1992 he was awarded a testimonial against Manchester City for his services to the Wanderers and has up until recently been doing the after dinner speaking circuit.

Worthington describes former strike partner Neil Whatmore as the most undervalued player whom he has played alongside and in his book "One Hump or Two" he has regrets about the way in which he left the Wanderers for Birmingham City in November 1979.

Ex-club captain Bergsson has had to relinquish the role due to ongoing media commitments in his native Iceland.
