Bolton Wanderers attempts to lure Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill to the Reebok Stadium have hit a snag after the Midlands side where reluctant to allow the England U21 international to quit Villa Park on a permanent basis.
The 21-year old has been subject to interest from the Wanderers and Birmingham City during this month's transfer window, but Villa boss Martin O'Neill does not want to lose the youngster.
Bolton have had a £4 million bid rejected and Birmingham have also been given the cold shoulder, but there could still be hope of the two clubs looking into the possibility of loaning Cahill as they look to bolster their defensive options going into the final half of the season.
Cahill has spent time on loan with Sheffield United this season and in 2004 he had a successful spell with Burnley.
