Newcastle United Preview

Bolton will be hoping to get the Everton defeat of a few days ago out of their system as they face Newcastle United at the Reebok Stadium tommorow evening.

The Magpies come to Lancashire on the back of a poor early season start and they have not had the best of records at Bolton in recent years having lost the last three away meetings.

Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce may be without the services of wing-back Ricardo Gardner after the Jamaican picked up a hamstring injury so ex-Magpie Gary Speed could be forced to play in an unfamilar left-back role with Abdoulaye Diagne-Faye coming into midfield to make his Bolton debut.

Allardyce may once again resist the urge to play new signings Hidetoshi Nakata and Jared Borgetti despite the weekend defeat against Everton. Stelios Giannakopoulos and Ricardo Vaz-Te will both be looking for opportunities having impressed as late substitutes against the Toffees.

Newcastle's Graeme Souness is able to welcome back Shola Ameobi after the striker completed a three match ban but neither Keiron Dyer, Craig Moore or Michael Chopra will be available to play

Veteran midfielder Lee Clark may get a further opportunity in the sixteen due to the club's injury problems and former Trotters defender Robbie Elliott is also named in the away-team squad for the game.

IT HAPPENED WHEN BOLTON PLAYED NEWCASTLE

It is ten years to the week that Bolton faced Newcastle in their first home Premiership match. Incidentally one of the Newcastle scorers that night was Les Ferdinand who later had a short spell with Wanderers

When these two sides met in January 1998 it was Newcastle who claimed victory thanks to a last minute goal from Temuri Ketsbaia. The balding Georgian international celebrated by repeatedly kicking the advertisement hoarding

In October 2001 Jussi Jaaskelainen was sent off during this meeting and Bolton had no reserve goalkeeper so midfielder Bo Hansen had to go in goal and the Trotters lost 4-0

The season before last saw Henrik Pedersen score a bizarre goal from near the corner flag after debutant Steven Taylor had misjudged the bounce of the ball. Pedersen's cross cum shot looped over the head of Shay Given and into the net
