Cambridge Track Wanderers Youngster

Cambridge United have confirmed that they would like to sign Bolton youngster Sam Ashton on a short term deal which may also possibly be extended to next season.

Goalkeeper Ashton made his Wanderers first team debut as an outfield player during last month's FA Cup win away at Watford but his opportunities of becoming the regular custodian at the Reebok Stadium are limited due to the more experienced trio of Jussi Jaaskelainen, Ian Walker and Ali Al-Habsi.

The 19-year old would be able to move to the Conference side on work experience terms due to the fact that he is still on scholarship forms with the Trotters and U's boss Rob Newman is hopeful of a deal happening.

"I'd like to bring him in if possible and I'll speak to the powers that be about him. We'll try to get him on a short-term deal but we could be looking towards next season as well." said Newman

Ashton is named in the Cambridge squad as a trialist for their friendly match against Boston United.

Meanwhile the Daily Mirror claims that local rivals Wigan Athletic are casting an eye on Jaaskelainen's contract developments.
