Bolton assistant manager Sammy Lee has emerged as a shock contender to take over as the new manager of Premiership rivals Charlton Athletic.

According to some of this morning's media reports, Lee will return home early from England's training camp in Portugal to talk to the Addicks after they missed out on the appointment of Hull City boss Peter Taylor.

The former England midfielder returned to the Wanderers in a coaching capacity a year ago after spending similar stints with the Football Association and hometown club Liverpool.

Lee is rated as one of the best football coaches in Britain but he has always spoken of a desire to manage at the top level once his stint with the Wanderers is over.
