Head Physio Mick Rathbone told evertonfc.com: “James has done some very light jogging today. He obviously has a sore toe and is extremely doubtful for weekend.”

A definite absentee for the game at the Reebok Stadium is Lee Carsley who continues to nurse a knee injury after suffering a set-back during pre-season.

Carsley is, however, making good progress in his bid to be fit but after what happened in the game with Fenerbahce, the medical team will approach his comeback with caution.

Baz added: “It is difficult because he had 11 weeks last time and the first challenge he was involved with he injured himself again.

“But Lee’s running flat out again in a straight line, yet whilst he is doing very well, we must bear in mind what happened last time.”
