Jewell unhappy after Goodison stalemate

Paul Jewell was unhappy with the display of his team and the referee as Latics fought back twice to earn a point in a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park today (Saturday).

Lee Carsley then headed Tim Cahill's cross wide before the Australian was involved in an incident that saw two Latics players given yellow cards by referee Alan Wiley.

The first half was combative and neither team did enough to break the deadlock, Antonio Valencia wasted the best chance of the half, four minutes before the interval when he was played in by Emile Heskey, but pulled his shot across the face of goal.
Everton started the strongest in the second half, and the deadlock was broken on 49 minutes when Fitz Hall was caught dwelling on the ball, the resulting Cahill cross was only half cleared and Johnson fired home from eight yards.
It was the catalyst for a spell of sustained Everton pressure, with
Latics somehow managed to survive and got themselves back into the fray on 63 minutes when Joseph Yobo's clearance was blocked and former Everton winger Kevin Kilbane, making his debut, provided a perfect cross for Paul Scharner to power a precision header beyond the despairing dive of Tim Howard.
Four minutes later, Everton were gifted the lead again, when Leon Osman, under pressure from Gary Teale, seemed to stand on the ball and fall over. The referee hesitated and then pointed to the spot, leaving substitute James Beattie to fire home from 12 yards.
Latics equalised almost instantly to secure a point when an unmarked Scharner swept a Kilbane pass into the net, past Howard.
Paul Jewell:
"I was disappointed with the mistakes we made to give goals, and with the official.
"We committed too many silly fouls, as was shown with their penalty. We claw our way back into the game and then throw it away with a silly foul like that.
"We have got to learn. We lost the ball in our own half for their first goal, and then gave them their penalty with a silly foul.
"Everton didn't have to work too hard for either of their goals, we must learn we cannot just gift teams goals."
He added: "I was pleased with the spirit and the way we fought back, twice, and, if we had been better with our final pass, we could have won it.
"Particularly because the build-up to the game was all about Everton, and them being top of the table after beating us. They had beaten
"As for the official, teams like us commit one foul and get a booking and so-called big clubs can do three fouls before the book comes out.
"I'm delighted with the point, it shows character, but we should not have been fighting like that to get back into a game."
