Jewell can stay for as long as he likes

Paul Jewell has been told by Chairman Dave Whelan that he has a “job for life” at Wigan Athletic after signing a contract extension, committing himself to the club until 2010.

“Paul Jewell is here for as long as he wants to stay” said Whelan.

"He has committed himself to the club for another four years. We're delighted with that because as far as we're concerned he is simply the best.

"If a big club came in for him and it was what he wanted, then I'd shake his hand, thank him for what he had done for Wigan Athletic, and I'd wish the guy all the best for the future.

"He is too good a man to hold back and our partnership is too good for that.

"He's an absolute pleasure to work with. But I have this fear that another club will come in for him."
