"It makes you wonder whether the Wigan public really want Premiership football.” said Paul Jewell after just over 15,000 turned up for the midweek game against Arsenal.
Maybe he should take a long look at his club and wonder if Wigan Athletic actually deserve any fans after serving up the most abject and pathetic performance seen in many a month.
Jewell showed how out of touch with the real world he is with his midweek comments. Perhaps after picking up so many fat pay packets, he’s forgotten that many Latics supporters are earning 6 pounds an hour.
Just before Christmas, with 3 home games in 11 days, maybe our priorities aren’t actually Wigan Athletic, and Jewell’s comments will just serve to alienate the casual
Combined with Jewell’s feeble attempts to motivate a team against a poor Sheffield United side, it illustrates how sad the balding scousers comments actually are.
In a totally dismal game, Latics failed to whip up the supporters that had mistakenly thought that watching this game was preferable to Christmas shopping, into anything more than a disgruntled murmur.
In a half where chances were at an absolute premium, the only illumination was Rob Hulse turning in Stephen Quinn’s cross for the visitors, only their third away goal of the season.
The huff and puff continued in the second half until, unexpectedly, referee Peter Walton got the crowd excited by first awarding Sheffield United a penalty for a clear handball by Arjan de Zeeuw. He then reversed his decision after consulting the linesman, awarding Latics a goal kick.
Then, bizarrely, he changed his mind again and decided a drop ball on the six-yard line was the appropriate option. No doubt that idiot Alan Shearer will have something intellectual to say about it on MOTD.
