Leeds 3-3 Latics (FA Cup - Latics win 4-2 on pens)

Latics overcame Leeds United at Elland Road after extra time to secure a fourth round FA Cup tie against Manchester City at Eastlands.

A game that started dismally at the JJB and continued at Elland Road livened up when Latics Swedish 'striker' Andreas Johansson put the visitors into a deserved lead in the 24th minute.

 

Latics looked comfortable, but against the run of play, Leeds equalised four minutes from the break when Laighton Baines cleared a Rob Hulse header off the line and David Healy was on hand to score, despite the best attmpts of Andreas Johansson.

 

Jason Roberts turned and lashed home Latics second five minutes into the second half with some wonderful close control skills and a powerful finish but Leeds levelled again when Healy converted a 64th-minute penalty for handball against Matt Jackson. He had his hand in Rob Hulse's face in an attempt to prevent the Leeds striker from heading home.

 

Twelve minutes into extra time, Roberts rose to nod in a Graham Kavanagh cross but a screamer of a shot from Ireland fullback Gary Kelly sent the tie into the penalty shootout.

 

Misses by Healy and Hulse left Kavanagh needing to convert his spot kick to clinch victory and the Irishman delivered a 4-2 win on penalties, setting up a fourth-round tie against Manchester City
