Alan Mahon has moved to Burnley on-loan for the remainder of the season. At the end of the loan period, the 27-year-old will make a £200,000 permanent transfer and sign a three-year contract at Turf Moor.

Paul Jewell said about the move: "It was Mahony's choice but he goes with my blessing.

"He is a good pro who has always tried his best for me but I understand that he wants to get some more first team action under his belt this season."

Mahon joined Latics in February 2004 when he signed from Blackburn Rovers.

He began his career with Tranmere Rovers, moving to Sporting Lisbon when his Prenton Park contract expired in the summer of 2000.

But he returned to England after less than half a season, joining Blackburn in December 2000.

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill said: "It's been a mad rush to make sure we beat the deadline to get him signed.

"We're looking forward to having him in the squad hopefully for the next three and a bit years."
