Mr Wigan Athletic Returns
By Oscar Wilde
June 1 2006
John Benson has returned to Wigan Athletic in a role explained by the club that will “facilitate a more efficient and professional liaison between the administrative and playing sides of the club”.
The appointment has been regarded rather dimly by much of the Latics old-guard however, who view his appointment as yet another instance of “jobs for the boys” and who feel, along with Maurice Lindsay, Brenda Spencer et al, that he is just another piece of administrative dead-wood.

Paul Jewell however seemed pleased with the appointment, stating: "Beno is an experienced old head who knows the game inside out, and has a genuine affinity and love for this club. He is trusted, well known and respected throughout football."
Latics have also taken on-board former player Neil Fitzhenry, whose Football League career was cut short after sustaining a knee injury, as part of the medical team, taking on the vital role as youth team physiotherapist. Dave Hallam vacates that role and becomes masseur to the first squad.
