Leighton Baines has signed a contract extension at Latics keeping him at the club until 2009.
Manager Paul Jewell expressed his pleasure at the new three-year deal and was full of praise for the full-back: “Bainsey has done magnificently in his short career so far”. He said. “He has risen with the club from Division Two and has really stood out in the Premiership. “It is a massive step up in class required to stay afloat at this level but he has taken to Premiership football like a duck to water and I know he can go on to have a long career at the top.” Bainesy has made five appearances for England Under-21s and insists he never had any intention of leaving Latics, stating: “I’ve always said I wanted to stay at “I really enjoyed last season in the Premiership. I think I proved I could play at this level but I want to keep improving and the way to do that is to play week-in week-out against the best teams in the country.”
