Latics make bid for Heskey/Savage going nowhere.

Latics have finally made a formal bid for Birmingham City striker Emile Heskey. Rated by Birmingham at £5 million, City have said they have no intention of selling the former England international.

Although Heskey’s goalscoring record with Birmingham is unimpressive - just 16 in 78 appearances - Jewell sees the 28-year-old as an ideal signing.

“It is not normal for this club to comment on targets until the player has signed,” said Jewell.

“But in this instance it’s an open secret that we’ve made the bid.

“I think he’s a player who could do very well for us, but we’ll see how the situation develops.”

Robbie Savage

On the Robbie Savage speculation Jewell said: “We did ask Blackburn about Robbie through the correct channels because he’s a player I thought would be a good addition to our squad.

“But Blackburn said he was not for sale. That’s as far as the conversation went.

“We never spoke to the player, we didn’t make him a wage offer and as far as I’m concerned the matter’s closed.

“We move onto other targets. But it shows the ambition of the club that we are now targeting some of the Premiership’s top performers.

“I’m still very confident we will get the five or six new players we want by the beginning of the season.”

Denny Landzaat

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Denny Landzaat - a transfer target for Latics if speculation is to be believed - is set to join Espanyol early next week.

The Catalan outfit held talks with AZ technical director Marcel Brands and a representative of the Dutch international in Maspalomas on Wednesday, and believe that the discussions went well.

"The player has told the club that he thinks it is time to make the jump to the Spanish league," read a statement on Espanyol's official website.

"The parties also came close to a definitive agreement about the transfer fee.

"On Monday or Tuesday a delegation from Espanyol will go to Holland to finalise the transfer of the Dutch international midfielder."
