The changing face of the North End

Today was the start of the dismantling of the North End terracing that has graced Brickfields for some six years providing the supporters with the best view of the rugby albeit at one end behind the North end goal and with the striking logo that club members painted on the seats after taking possession of the old Harlequins stand in which we were seated when we played them away in the league.

The stand had to go when we learned of the exciting plans for the Royal Marines 350th. anniversarry celebrations planned to be held at Brickfields in July this year as the need for extra seating was required following the decision by the Health & Safety folk  to close the existing stand some months ago, as although it did a great job for us whilst we were able to keep it open, it was no longer fit for purpose, a great shame as it provided some 2400 seats on matchdays, a great asset to the club, and it gave an excellent allround structure to the ground.

But, of course the extra seating was needed in order to accomadate the numbers that the Royal Marines are catering for.

This is one of two lorries that took some of the old seating away in convoy, with a pallet with more seating in the foreground ready to go.

After a mornings work about half the seats had been stripped from the scaffolding.

There were about seven or eight on site for the work which seemed to be going on very well.

A close up of the same. As with all dismantling projects it's quicker to take it down that to erect it in the first place.

What a good job the tree's and shrubs growing underneath were treated first, you had a problem walking under the stand before.

I'm looking forward to seeing the replacement stand go in place in time for the celebrations.

Will the new stand be kept for the rugby or just for the Royal Marines concert?

I never knew this stand was coming down.
I remember it full for the Exeter, Northampton and Pirate games.

It couldn't be used at the moment so time for a change.

I believe the long term future of the new stand is still under negotiation, so fingers crossed.

Was up there today, all the seats have now gone.

what did we get in scrap value ? so what can we afford now

Scrap value not known as it was only moved on Monday, but nothing to write home about, maybe the cost of dismantling it?

If scrap value better the same as dismantling cost then better than paying for disposal.

now you see now you don't but alas no replacement. not even the promised temporary stand . nice backdrop gone.
