Gills offer 'lucrative' contract to Jarvo

Gillingham chairman has today confirmed that he has both rejected a bid for Jarvis and offered a lucrative offer for his star man. Earlier today, it was reported that Stoke City and Plymouth Argyle each made bids of £250,000.

Speaking to KentOnline, Paul Scally claimed that the contract offer made by the club to Matt Jarvis was a substantial offer. The Gillingham chairman said, "The offer is the highest in the club’s history for a player of his age and stature."

Then, speaking to the official club site, Gillingham boss Ronnie Jepson said, "The chairman's had an offer in black and white, I think it was about 250 grand, but I don't want Matty Jarvis going anywhere. He's a big part here, I think we've improved him as a player. You can see the confidence in him, he's got some little tricks and he can play in one or two different positions now so he's improving all the time. I'd love Matty to be here at least another year with me, and I think he'd improve more."

Jarvi, 20, has caught the eye of even premiership football clubs. "The Chairman has offered Matty a very good contract, but at this moment in time I think Matty and his advisors are just waiting to see what happens elsewhere.

"I understand Matty Jarvis and all the other players have ambition. If they are ambitious they want to get to the top, and that's great, because when they are, it helps me while they are playing for this football club," he concluded.

Former Gillingham boss Tony Pullis tried to distance himself from the rumours linking him with a move for the young Gills star. Pullis said, "I haven't seen a lot of him [Jarvis].

"They are talking about him being a very, very good player, but there are one or two we are interested in. The secret is to get to players others are not looking at.

"We've got one or two irons in the fire to bring someone in. One minute you think you are near, the next you seem to be a million miles away. You spend hours on the phone and hours waiting for them to get back.

"I've spoken to three or four Premiership managers about their players and you just hope they get back to you. We are a bit light if injuries don't clear up quickly, so we've got to make sure we don't leave the cupboard bare."

atty Jarvis made his senior debut against Sunderland three years ago. During his Gillingham career Matty has found the net fifteen times, five of those coming this season.

After impressing with same occasional senior appearences and impressive reserve and youth games, Jarvis was rewarded a senior contract - which he signed at th final home game of the season in May 2004. Matty scored his first ever senior goal in the one nil victory over Wolves during the 04-05 season.

Last season Jarvis won 'Young Player of the Year' award and the 'Goal of the Season' award. Speaking about Jarvis, Gills boss Ronnie Jepson spoke of his intent to hang onto his star man.
