Fortnightly Gills Report

On another Friday night, Gillingham found themselves in dreamland with seven minutes left on the clock. The side were 1-0 up AWAY at Northampton- It looked as if we might hold on for a crucial win, three points closer to safety.

But alas, it was reality that bit once again bit Gillingham, as with just as the Northampton front man Robertson made the second half pressure pay.

The home form was going to be crucial if we were to avoid the drop, with teams at the bottom winning, but the Gills again faltered as Bas Savage stumbled his way through Ben Chorley’s comedy defending and finished neatly. It was a depressing night for Gillingham, who had precious few chances and looked like a beaten team from the start.

A paltry 170 people decided to witness the next match against Scunthorpe, at Glanford Park. Their long drive home from Shropshire was made miserable after Hinds, Mulligan and Morris gave the form team victory after Jarvis had equalised with his first goal since late September.
Ben Chorley rounded off his nightmare week with a sending off, with the Gills level, arousing doubts about his suitability to play at this level.

The Gills faired little better off the field as a loan bid for Leon Clarke failed, but Romain Larrieu stated his desire to stay at the club, after his loan spell ends today against Blackpool.

Despite the doom and gloom of this report, there are reasons to be cheerful, few as they may be:

1. We still have Matty Jarvis. Off form in recent months, but undoubtedly talented and his effort can not be faulted. Will the goal at Scunthorpe kick-start his season?

2.We are five points clear. Although in a downward spiral, Gillingham do have the advantage of having a small cushion over the relegation zone. Any manager will tell you that they would rather have points on the board than a game in hand at this stage.

3. Although no club is “too good to go down” Gillingham possess some quality assets, such as Jarvis and Mulligan. It is vital that the other players contribute to the team and turn the season around.

4. There is bright youth talent. Danny Pugh made his first appearance against Brighton, and although nervous, looked like an excellent prospect.

5.Finally, our future is in our hands. With vital games against Rotherham (away), Brentford (home) and Bournemouth (away) to come, it is far from a hopeless cause.


Despite our recent adversity, the fans have to keep up their never-tiring support, especially away from home.
