Chiefs end their Heineken Cup pool with a win in Cardiff and return to LV=Cup duties with a win over the Ospreys.

On an extremely windy day at Sandy Park anything could happen. As it happens plenty did with Chiefs scoring 5 tries to Ospreys 4 with Ceri Sweeney somehow managing to slot 4 conversions for the Chiefs. Those who were there will testify to how strong and unpredictable the wind was. So was some of the play by both sides but the fact that all Chiefs tries were scored by forwards probably indicates where the difference between the sides was.
After what was a very messy first half with Chiefs trailing 8:10 the crowd had something to cheer about with the old warhorse James Scaysbrook charging his way over the line following a concerted period of pressure. Luke Cowan-Dickie added a second to his first half try with James Phillips and Don Armond wrapping things up for the Chiefs after the Ospreys had drwan level in the 55th minute. There were run outs for a few academy players as well some of the main squad who have been injured or just on the fringes. Not exaclty a smooth perfortmance but plenty of desire to get the job done and enough to see off a lively young Ospreys side.
Next up it's away to Worcester for the final pool game and any progress is still in the lap of the gods in this crazy competition.

Well entertaining, it was....
And yes the "flying squad" kicking display was amazing !
LCD.....2 tries and the most obvious yellow card given away all season, fair play you know the lad is on the pitch....and what pace..
Sireli....still not fit
Fets, very strong and always looking to get involved
TJ2, whitten, JP and others much better 2nd half after half time "advice" no doubt
Felt for Townsend who had a topsy turvy day but actually didn't let it put him off and did lots of good things as well.
The fact Bateman can cover prop and hooker is very useful
Mitchell attracted penalties when he came on...I hope he proves me wrong before the End of the season but I think the mature offy reporting was generous in its reporting of his time at the club..I don't feel he has done much for us at all
Strong back row reflected in the try scorers..well done scays ..did JP do enough to get more time at the club....tough call....did Romano graham hmmm. There are more games to come I suppose.

I make it that...
If Sale win with a BP they will go through no matter our result.
If Sale win and we don't, Sale will go through.
If Sale win and we win with a BP, we will go through as we have scored more tries than they have (assuming Leicester don't also win with a BP and score two more tries than we do).
If Sale draw or lose and we win, we go through.
Sale away to Ospreys on Friday. Pretty much comes down to what Sale do!
Everyone get that? Am I right?

Ospreys will have nothing to play for so I would expect Sale to beat them convincingly, hopefully it will be 3 not 4 tries or Ospreys prove me wrong.

We will know on Friday night what we need to do. Our fate is in the hands of both Sale and, to a lesser extent, Leicester. Our problem is that Sale are up against a team that can't progress any further and Tigers against a team who have already qualified. I wonder how committed either Ospreys or Bath will be?
I thought today's game was really good considering the conditions - both the wind and the slippery pitch - made playing difficult. Both teams played some good rugby. I was very impressed with the Ospreys backs, very quick and threatening whenever they got the ball. Fortunately, our forwards were too good for theirs. The Sweeney's kicking - given that, at times, the posts were bent sideways so strong was the wind - was quite exemplary. He led the team well too.
I see that the Quins / Tigers match was abandoned after 70 minutes because of the strong wind. I'm not sure what the rules are, but it must have been touch and go at Sandy Park today. I can't recall seeing such strong winds there before.

The tigers game was more abandoned due to safety concerns with by the sound of it advertising hording being blown around and a collapsed scaffolding

We thought Tom James did very well at full-back. Not as good under the high ball as a specialist 15...but playing at FB gave him those extra few yards to "get up a head of steam".
Ian Whitten, Don Armand & James Phillips were the stand out players for us.
That Said, Big Will, Hendrickson & LCD all had a pretty good game.
Agree with what you say about Mitchell.
But can't agree on Fets...I'm afraid the jury is still out on that one.

The wind today was gusting at 50+ miles per hour at the south end but dropping to not much more than 0.
Make of that what you want. I don’t care I have 2 steaks and chips to eat!

The pack took couple of scrums to settle down, after that i thought they did fine.Lloyd included. He will benefit from the good game time he is starting to get.

Yep, re Fets I should clarify strength in terms of muscles...i.e holding off about 4 defenders 2 yards from touch and making ground and managing to keep the ball in field. in terms of general strength as a winger jack and jessy are undoubtedly more complete I would agree

I did enjoy seeing JP just after half time charging and making ground.....it was a shame when earlier he had a 2 on 2 with grAham outside him and he passed rather than making a big hole which you would expect from him, hopefully his confidence is coming back and we'll see more of the hole making !!
It was useful at this level to have Armand and JP able to go into the 2nd row when Conlon and Simmonds came on in the back row
Also great try saving tackle from Townsend in the last quarter..

Completely agree on those points.
And Surely if we had a "full season" A league competition this would be a hell of a benefit to players like JP, and many others, who just need more game time to take that next step up to being in contention for a place in the first 23 ?

You make a good point about the A league. I would have thought a few more A games per season would make a great deal of sense. Perhaps converting the LV= cup - which is effectively an A team competition - into a proper A league might work?

Can't see why that shouldn't work.
Getting younger players, fringe players & players returning from injury game time by shipping them out to other clubs is all well & good for match fitness...but it does not bring the players together as a team and they do not get the benefit of developing together under the same coaching staff.

Blimey. Having just watched the ITV4 highlights, I realise how lucky we were with the weather; the conditions at several other games, especially Quins, were truly awful. Also, it is noticeable how well the pitch is holding up under the current deluge compared to many others. Well done to the ground staff.
