Sir Bobby Robson dies

Sir Bobby Robson has sadly passed away at the age of 76. The former England manager, who had fought a long battle with cancer, passed away at his home this morning.
A statement issued on behalf of his family said:"It is with great sadness that it has been announced today that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer," read a statement released by Robson's family. "He died very peacefully this morning at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him."Sir Bobby's funeral will be private and for family members only. A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby's life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues."Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time."In a playing career that lasted nearly 20 years, Robson played for only three clubs – Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and, briefly, the Vancouver Royals. He won 20 England caps, scoring four goals.He managed PSV Eindhoven, Ipswich, Fulham, Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona, Porto and the club he supported as a boy, Newcastle. He won both the Dutch and Portuguese leagues with PSV and Porto and the European Cup Winners Cup with Barcelona. He also took England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup.Robson, who was made a knight bachelor in 2002, took his final managerial job with Newcastle, leading them to third place in the Premier League, and a Champions League berth, in 2003.Sir Bobby made his last appearance at St James’ Park on Sunday where a charity match took place. An England side including Alan Shearer, Paul Gascoigne and Peter Shilton beat a Germany side 3-2 in front of a crowd that nearly reached the 30,000 mark.
