Centre Jack Adams will lead a Gloucester squad with the emphasis on youth in the Middlesex Sevens at Twickenham. A star with the England sevens squad, Adams will captain a squad which includes promising young players like Charlie Simpson-Daniel, younger brother of you-know-who.
After a quiet spell following the pre-season visit to Canada, Glaws named their squad on Thursday, which was good news as it showed the club got home all right and is still preparing for the new season. Coach Dean Ryan told the official club website: “We have seen in the past that this competition can be used as a stepping stone into senior rugby and that is why we view it as an opportunity for these young players to go an express themselves.” “It will be great experience for Jack Adams to have the responsibility of skippering the team and will be significant for him and will ensure these guys come back to the club with a real buzz after taking part in a serious competition. “In recent seasons we have done well in the Middlesex Sevens and I see no reason why that cannot continue.” The Glaws squad is: Guy Thompson, Tristan Roberts, Dan Williams, Jack Adams (capt), Andres Pretorius, Charlie Sharples, Jonny May, Mark Foster, Charlie Simpson-Daniel, Dan Norton, Dave Lewis, Henry Trinder.
Guy Thompson and Jonny May are new names on me. Pity it is a straight knock out this season as that side may struggle against some highly experienced opposition sides. Will be good exposure for the young lads though and best of luck to them against Bath.
I was sitting a few seatS from the front of the pitch and 20 mins before their match each team would walk past to do their stretches. A young lad sat behind us with his Gloucester shirt and hat on with his pen and programme ready waiting for the teams to arrive. He was about 6 or 7. When each team came past he ran to the front and asked for autographs. They all signed the programme (some even had a photo taken with him) Ojo, Phillips, Easter, Strettle and others. He was getting a good collection. As soon as the Glos team appeared from the tunnel and walked past us he got very excited and rushed to the front and asked for autographs again. Jack Adams oblieged and even had a quick chat with this start struck lad, however, when he asked another members of the squad for their autograph he told him to 'go away'. The young lad walked back to his seat and didnt dare move for the rest of the day. His confidence was crushed. His mother and father were very annoyed that the player had been so rude to a young loyal fan. Me and my party (of Bristol supporers) were gob-smacked at the way the player had dismissed this poor lad so cruelly. We tried to cheer him up by getting him Garvey and Rees autograph but it didnt seem to work. I like Gloucester and their supporers are great but this player brought shame upon the team.
Someone obviously didnt realise part of what the 7s is all about. I have been before and on that occasion every player seemed happy to chat away and sign items.
Shame about that Rugbymaster, because that never usually happens with Glaws players. After games at Kingsholm, all the squad are happy to sign autographs, and Mike Tindall says he enjoys stopping to talk to fans wherever he is. Maybe it was one of the youngsters being a bit big headed, which I'm sure someone will sort out quickly.
There have been rumours of a couple of youngsters suffering from Bigtime Charlieitus but im pretty sure the senior pro's will help make any needed attitude adjustments.
OOh a Witch hunt......how lovely...just like the old days! Its a shame that a professional rugby player would tell a small child to 'go away'. He may have been 'in the zone' just before a match and didn't want distracting. Everyone is different. I'm sure if the alledged rude person read this and knew how he'd offended the little boy, he'd be quite upset about it.
It is to be hoped it is recognised as an error because the club and players dont need incidents like this happening coz its not as if it was prior to the kick off of anything meaningful and it is not good P.R
