Glaws set to name new lock forward
Jake B - coming "home"
By Cherry Picker
June 12 2010
Bryan Redpath is hoping he will be able to announce the arrival of a new lock in the next few days, and it's thought that could complete the club's summer recruitment in one of the quietest close-seasons for many years. The new man is needed to bring the squad up to scratch after the departures of Marco Bortolami and Adam Eustace.
Coach Redpath (right) says he hopes the signing will "help some of the concerns about certain positions in the forward pack."
It probably will, Bryan, but it's perhaps significant that he uses the word "some" in that sentence.
Not all of the concerns, then?
It looks as if another summer signing will be Jake Boer, the former captain indicating that he expects to be back at Kingsholm as a member of the coaching team in the new season.
Having rejoined the Cherry and Whites last season, he was hampered by injury but now at the age of 35 his experience and popularity should be a major asset behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, in the draw for the Amlin Challenge Cup, Glaws face two French sides in their opening group games, Agen and La Rochelle. Rogivo from Italy are the fourth team in Pool Five.
Redpath says that having missed out on the Heineken Cup, he wants Glaws to do well in this competition.
He told the BBC: "Agen and La Rochelle are going to be tough challenges for us.
"We've learned some good experiences over the last three or four seasons and I think we've got to push on now.
"I played at Rovigo - it will be hostile but it certainly won't be under the same intensity as Agen or La Rochelle will be.
"There's no room for any arrogance or complacency at the moment and I think we have to show some respect to any opposition we play.
"If they're there we still have to beat them, we have to be very hard nosed about that."
