After the Lord Mayor’s show … cup-winners a week before, Gloucester went from rugby high to rugby low as they slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season at the end of an 11-game unbeaten run. Coach Bryan Redpath was honest enough to use words like “dreadful” and “awful” in summing up his team’s performance – fans who watched the game will probably use more X-rated language.
And as Redpath said, there can be no hiding from the facts – beaten 53-15 by mid-table Quins isn’t just a setback, it’s a major kicking for a team which has done so well in 2011.
The Quins pack battered Glaws, and the home backs were just as dominant in the sort of one-sided game the cherry and whites are not used to.
They knew there were some hard games to come in the last quarter of the Premiership season, but perhaps didn’t expect one of them to be at Quins.
WRONG.
This is probably just the start of a battle royal to hold on to that priceless top four spot.
Redpath told the BBC: “We were dreadful. We were well spanked today and we have to take the criticism that goes with that.
I think Quins had more energy than us, they looked fresher and more energised - that was pretty obvious.
"We fell off tackles today that we hadn't fallen off previously and that made it pretty easy to score against us on certain occasions.
"In the first half the game was gone at 24-3 because we never controlled any field position or possession.
"It happened and we have got to get on with it and deal with it.
“When things go wrong they go wrong, and today went extremely wrong.
“Weare now regarded as a reasonable side and are there to be knocked over. We have to get to grips with that and cope with it.”
They certainly didn’t cope with it at the Stoop, where Ugo Monye scored a hat trick of tries, ably assisted by Joe Gray and George Robson in the first half, Monye and George Lowe scoring two each after half-time.
With Rory Clegg converting six and kicking two penalties, it really was embarrassing at times and Glaqws barely deserved the consolation tries scored by Henry Trinder and Tim Molenaar.
perhaps the LV= Cup has a lot to answer for over this result – Glaws looked jaded and sluggish while Quins, beaten by Newcastle in the semi, were really up for the game.
In the end, it was virtually no contest.
Glaws are still third top and still have games in hand over most of their rivals, but they are 13 points behind leaders Leicester – games against Newcastle (home) and Sale (away) in the next two weeks must be won before the April 16 showdown at Welford Road.

Losing is one thing and the run was bound to end some time. But this was awful, and we can only hope it acts as a kick in the pants (known nowadays as a wake-up call, I believe).
