Questions galore as Glaws season draws to close

As players and fans alike look for excuses, compensation and any sort of comnfort at the end of another frustrating season, some of the theories and predictions being bandied about are beginning to border on the desperate.

One theory states that a year out of the Heineken Cup could be a catalyst for a new era of Kingsholm success, and that begs one simple question … if that is the case, why were the club so keen to qualify for the competition?

And here’s another question … if a club is in between coaches, as Glaws are now, why are they allowing stand-in coach Carl Hogg to making signings?

He has recruited veteran hooker Andy Long from Northampton, and whatever the rights and wrongs of that deal, one does wonder what happens if the man who is eventually appointed as coach doesn’t fancy him?

Mind you, a man of Long’s experience won’t do any harm, the front row at all clubs being arguably the most important section for any team to have strength in depth. And as a bonus, he will be playing a part in coaching.

Argentine hooker Matias Cortese is being released after a less-than-thrilling single season with Glaws, so Long will compete with Darren Dawidiuk and Huia Edmonds for the No. 2 short next season.

Yet Hogg predicts that Cortese will succeed elsewhere.

Whether Glaws succeed next season after this season’s failures remains to be seen … it all depends on who is appointed as coach, because the basis of a good squad is there.

All it needs is a magic touch to make it all work.

Meanwhile, after five defeats on the trot, Glaws could do with ending the season on a high at London Irish next weekend.
