While it can be said that the efforts to repair the broken crossbar were more entertaining than the game the 12-6 victory against the Warriors did hold out some promise for the New Year ..

It came in the shape of a much more solid pack performance in a game which was always going to be a slog against a side fighting for its future in the Premiership.

The next game against Irish at the Madejski Stadium on Sunday (2pm) will be a tougher test for the forwards, but it is becoming obvious a lot of hard work is being put in on the training field.

The set piece is now providing a much  better platform which makes it more of a pity that Freddie Burns hasn't got his head together over his future.

Billy Twelvetrees is not the answerer at outside half although his boot did win the game against the Warriors.
