Too Close For Comfort

Now that we have finally achieved something this season let's hope that the potential of this squad can be realised in 2015-2016 ..

We will have to do without our galaticos for the first half as they will all  be away on World Cup duty but that may nbot be our biggest problem.

We do have plenty of up and coming players and we have been strengtheing the squad. What is worrying, however, is our seeming lack of a coherent game plan.

It was never more evident than in the final where we were significantly better  than Edinburgh in most areas, but could not close the game out - so indiscipline and wrong decision making could have cost us the chance of that lucrative place at  European Rugby's top table.

Gloucesters Bill Meakes is sent off during the European Rugby Challenge Cup Final at Twickenham Stoo

The scoreline of 19-13  was too close for comfort and with Billy Mekaes off for a needless high tackle we were vulnerable to a breakaway try. For once we rode our luck but we just don't seem to have the characters, on and off the pitch, to show leadership at the right times.

It is all well and good having the talent of the likes of Jonny May on show, but if you don't focus it in the right areas you will not win the really big prizes.

Anyway well done to the lads for giving us a night to remember in all kinds of way.

Sorry, but I thought we had very good leadership and control, certainly in the last 10 minutes. Watch it again and look at what Twelvetrees, Laidlaw, and Hook did. Not saying it didn't go a bit pearshaped around Moriaty and Meakes departures but others quickly stepped up and put their bodies on the line.
