At 4.00 pm on Saturday January 9th Newcastle Faklcons were top of the Premiership and Gloucesterr were bottom - courtesy of a 22-10 victory for the home side. A veritable gulf between the sides?
Not really. The difference was that Falcons have a point to prove after everyone wrote them off before the season started, while Glocs have to live up to their reputation while building for the future under a new Head Coach.
Few could argue with Skivington's post match summary: "A game we could have won. We had chances to win and loads of pressure, but we didn't execute them well enough. We didn't push the boundaries.
"We've got loads of good lads performing well individually, but we have to bring it all together."
We did start well only for a dodgy steal from Falcons to send speedy right winger Adam Radwan racing the length of the field. Much was made of the way he curved inside Jonny May - the truth is the England man did very well to lay an arm on him consdiering how much space Radwan had to play with.
Sloppy cover at the breakdown allowed Argentinian Matias Orlando to pick up and nip over, before May scored the shortest range try he will ever mamage.
Lloyd Evans was not on his best kicking from again. However, he managed to convert May's try and added a penalty to keep us right in the game.
There was a two point margin in Falcons favour for an age, but it was they who closed the game out with a Connon penalty. It was followed by try at the death for front row George McGuigan. That scorre denying us what may be a vital losing bonus point.
