Zach Mercer is the surprise selection in the Gloucs side to take on Clermont on Friday night in the Challenge Cup. He's recovered from injury sooner than expected and wil be in a side which also sees Santi Carreras and Louis Rees-Zammit start.

There are wholesale changes from the side which pipped Black Lion in Tbilisi last week with Harry Elrington, Santi Socino and Fraser Balmain iin the fornt row and Mattias Alemanno joining Freddie Clarke in the second-row.

Lewis Ludlow, Mercer and Jack Clement will form the back row while Rees-Zammit will be at full back.

Clermont will provide a stern test after beating Edinburgh 31-18 in their first game.
