With the chance of play at Bath today as likely as finding rocking horse droppings, our progress into the "quarters" of the FPT will rest on Cardiff next Wednesday - not a likely prospect either! The inexplicable loss against the Welsh at Taunton may well have put paid to our aspirations. Flaming Celts!! However, the rain may still save our hides!

Three sides in it for the two places in the quarter-finals. Gloucestershire are there if they get a point from our Monday match. They can't be caught on their 10 points after beating Hampshire on Sunday. We lose our game in hand over Worcestershire but go above them on points with 8 should Monday be rained off.
So it will all be down to the last game. If both are rained off we are there. We will have 9 and Worcestershire will have 8 and we'll go second. If the games are played then Worcs have to beat Glos to get above us. If we beat the Welsh then we get second place because I think our run rate is worse than the Gladi's (that is assuming that the Pear's beat them). If the Bristolians win then they are free and clear on 12 points.
It would be nice to go through on merit rather than as a hostage of the weather but if it rains, it had better rain right across the bottom of the country. Cardiff being rained off leaves us in the hands of our friends up the M5....not happy about that one!
The game didn't happen. Everything was rained off and we are through as the second in the South West group waiting to find out which leading group side we will be visiting to get a semi final place.
Not the best way to get the result but progress is better than nothing.

Typical weather for half-term. We've got my a family of five staying with us. I really hope it doesn't rain as much as is forecast. Still, I'm glad we didn't buy advance tickets for them!
Rosy and I aim to go to Bath, but we'll check on tonight's forecast before our final decision.
We had visions of arriving bright and early and walking along the canal, with warm sun on our backs. I guess it's all a dream!

Rob I was about to put something on here about the weather myself, the forecast for tomorrow as you say is terrible.
It is a long way to go (and for some further than me) and sit in the car waiting for the rain to stop. It will be a shame if no play is possible with all the hard work that goes into putting one day’s cricket on, not to mention the expense.
I am hopping to get an update on the conditions at bath very early in the morning (about 8 am) then I will decide if I am going!

Hope you guys do get some cricket this weekend , Middlesex at Southgate today abandoned this morning (early inspection) and our trip to Tonbridge Wells tommorow also looks doubtful.
No matter though , todays abandonment sees us unable to qualify anyway .

The problem that Bath as a ground has is that its drainage and covers are understandably less complete than a County headquarters.
I was surprised to see play start at Nevil Road Bristol at 4.45pm, giving each side 20 overs. Hampshire's first innings of 144 for 5 off 20 seemed inadaequate until in reply Glos lost Marshall to the first ball he faced followed by North, Gidman and Taylor.
At about 30 for 4 I was close to leaving but whilst Spearman remained there was a chance. And what a chance he took. His innings of about 67 off 40 balls or so was quite remarkable, of the very highest order, some sensational shots that thrilled the small but excited crowd.
When Mr Spearman was caught on the boundary Glos still had plenty to do and Mark Hardinges stepped up to the crease and almost hit the pavilion clock with one six.
Once again one was left pondering, how do they do it? Top of the table and on their way to Lords.

It was a good win by Gloucester I listen to it on the radio.
One advantage with playing at Bath is that it is the only game being played, so Somerset haven't got to be concerned about the rest of the square. So they with play if at all possible.

An update direct from the ground at Bath is the rain has eased at the moment 8.25am the outfield is very wet, if it was to stop from raining now (very unlikely) there could be play some time today.
There is no parking on the rugby field, that’s a surprise.

I'm also in Dorchester this weekend, Wurzel, and I think we've done remarkably well compared to other parts of the country. We've had nice sunny afternoons on both Satruday and Sunday.
Sadly, our luck seems to have run out today, though, and I think we can forget about Bath.
I don't think Cardiff will happen either as the forecast is beyond awful. Still, if we don't go through then we really need to look to the fact that we somehow contrived to lose to Glam - who no one else ever seems to lose to in this competition - rather than just blaming the weather.

Watched Somerset play at Bath for many years.Never a good venue for us. I am sure they lost a lot more than what they won at the rec.Although only twenty minutes down the line from my home i was always happy when the Bath festival was over although we had to pay treble the fare to Taunton.

Yes, we've been really lucky with the weather, compared with the forecast. I cycled to Portland, on Saturday, and lazed in my garden hammock yesterday, but our luck seems to have deserted us today.

It's rained here solid for 24 hours now. If Bath is getting any of this then I doubt there'll be any play today at all. The forecast suggests that it will brighten up this afternoon but the damage must already have been done. Trying to keep this lot off a pitch must be a nightmare.

So did my mum, but it doesn't work in BST, for it becomes "rain before 8, fine by 12", which doesn't sound so persuasive.
So I blame Summer Time for the appalling prospect of any cricket anywhere. I certainly hope the Old Trafford Test is not affected, for it's at a beautifully balanced stage. Ditto the Jamaica Test, where I presume there is no bank holiday weather threatening.

Can someone check my reasoning at the top of this thread and just make sure I haven't got my head where I usually find it on Mondays when I don't have to get it in gear?
I think we're through if everything is rained off this week and even if it isn't, the Pears have to get a better result than us on Wednesday to overtake us at all. Is that right?

Can I just say what a shame a washout today would be for Bath and the SCCC supporters in that area...they now get very little Somerset cricket, and this would have been a cracking game: Som v Gloucs, 50 overs a side, a lot to play for, top two teams in the table, Bank Holiday crowd, etc...a real shame.

I abandoned thoughts of jumping on a train from Paddington some days ago in view of the wrecthed forecast and so still have seen no cricket this season.

But if there had been a festival this year at this time it would have been dire!! I doubt there would have been any play at all this weekend because it has been foul in the South West and looks like continuing on that path for most of next week.
The weather is having far too big an influence on all the competitions at the moment. At least it stayed away from Manchester long enough for England to scramble the win up there.

Well after a throughly depressing morning in Bath Attention turns to the key game with Glamorgan on Wednesday. I`m hopeful that our taunton debacle against the welsh can be cast aside and the Worcestershire game at Taunton can be replicated. No first place available and we really could have done without having to win this game. New pitch in Cardiff which is somewhat unpredictable, the games down there have been low scoring so far. We need to win the toss and try and dictate the game. What do you guys think?

I've merged it guys because the answer to your question is outlined on this thread somewhere on page 2. Basically, if we want to go through the best thing is for rain across the whole of this area on Wednesday and all the games being called off. Then we go through second. A better result would be to win in Cardiff and the Pears to beat Glos then we could go through as winners if the run rate works for us...not sure it would though.

If Gloucester beat Worcester we go through, if both matches are rained off we go through, if Worcester win and Somerset’s match is rain off we may go though on a faster run rate.

Ive just about given up on going to the match tomorrow, the weather looks bad and as much as i would like to see their new revamped ground, im not going all the way to cardiff, just to stand around in the rain and wait for a train home.

Thank you for that CJM. I was trying to find the rules after Monday when they announced that Durham had qualified and I could see a scenario that could rock it. If wins come before run rate then I now inderstand it.
So we want to play and win OR if we don't play then we want no play at Worcester OR if there is play at Worcester we want Glos to win.
Am I right??

I think it a good principle that a side with more wins should qualify and Worcestershire deserve a bit of good fortune after last summer. If we don't qualify, we can lay the blame against a rather poor performance at Taunton against Glamorgan.

Exactly right, LoL. And in light of that 'chase,' against the Welsh county, we should be far from certain that we would have successfully hunted down what Worcs made at New Road anyway.
But, still, here's hoping for either an SCCC win or a universal wash-out.
I also think that, in future, rather than overall number of wins being decisive, the first tie-breaker should be head-to-head record. On this basis we would, of course, qualify ahead of Worcs in the event of an NR for our game and them winning.

I just don`t see how it is possible to argue that Worcestershire deserve a bit of luck after last summer, LoL, when they behaved with complete cynicism over their flooded ground.
When the waters came, their chief executive Mark Newton took the decision, a week in advance, to keep the championship match against Kent at New Road even though parts of the ground were still flooded, rather than move to Kidderminster, which was available.
He even admitted that he wanted to keep the groundstaff working at New Road rather than at Kidderminster, in an attempt to salvage the `lucrative` televised Pro40 game with Hampshire that was supposed to follow the four-day Kent match.
So, once again, it was money, money, money; not cricket, cricket, cricket.
When the Kent players arrived at the ground they couldn`t believe their eyes - or noses. Standing water still covered the entire playing area and the smell was like a farm field after muck-spreading.
Ironically in the end, the Pro40 match was lost also, despite being moved to Derby where it also rained.
How Worcesterhisre avoided disciplinary action, such as a points deduction, remains a mystery. At least they got their come-uppance with relegation from the first division, but the same fate could well have fallen on Kent through no fault of their own. Eventually Kent garnered just enough points to finish one place above relegation.
Not so much a question of luck, than of sheer greed.

I`m not sure whether you can be drawn against another county in your own group. But judging on matters as they stand in the games in progress around 4.30pm, the four table-toppers we could face on their own grounds in the quarter finals next Wednesday are:
Glo`shire (????);
Durham or Yorkshire (who could be frustrated by heavy rain just beginning to fall at Headingley);
Kent or Essex (with 244 on the board against Middlesex at Lord`s);
Or Nottingham/Leicestershire (playing each other in a truncated match at Oakham School) or Northamptonshire (defending 205 against Ireland in Dublin).
From a travel point of view, one from Notts, Leics or Northants might be the best bet.

Looks like I may have jumped the gun. Big-time charlie, Lancs, might yet fluke their way through. Yorks have been rained off, when needing about 50, with all wickets in hand off a possible 44 further overs. Either that, or a no result might let Derbys in and Durham topping the group.
