Andrew Caddick returns to the fight as the CC prepares to take a backseat for the 20/20. A late start because of the journey back from the Kent defeat and Yorkshire 2 down as we move towards lunch. This is the last four dayer before the short stuff and a good indicator of where we are and what we need to do to stay in the race to get that elusive first Championship title.

A Championship side with Caddick in it....what an unusual sight in 2008. The first of the season at home in front of a significant crowd wit a midday start because of the hme side getting back from Kent after yesterday's reserve day loss in the FPT quarter-final.
Langer goes into this game with the following 11.
Trescothick, Edwards, Langer, Hildreth, Blackwell, de Bruyn, Kieswetter, Phillips, Thomas, Caddick and Willoughby
No Trego who is still suffering from a side strain and Jonah misses out after the bit of a mare yesterday in the one dayer. Loadsa seam, few all rounders.
The visitors won the toss and chose to have first belt so they faced the fit Caddick in the first morning. A fairly credible 6 for 23 in that initial spell. No wickets but a over rate under 4.
First blood came early to Willoughby at the other end who got Lyth (?) to tickle one to Edwards at second slip. McGrath and Rudolph put the innings back on the straight and level with a 35 run partnership before McGrath seemed to have a complete head rush and smacked one from Philips to Thomas in the deep for no apparent reason and to the surprise of everyone on the pitch - including the batsman - 59 for 2 as I arrived.
As we come up to lunch Caddick is getting it to ask a few questions and looking like he's never been away. They are giving Alfonso a bit of a run at the OP end but he isn't exactly making the batsman play a lot. He does look like he's lost some weight though which is quite a feat if anyone has seen Thomas - he's not a big bloke. Some worries about Blackwell it seems who twisted awkwardly in the field and was off for a while and is now fielding in the slips. At lunch, Yorkshire re 93 for 2 with 30 overs gone.
The afternoon starts with Caddick and it sets the tone for the rest of the session really. He goes for 9 and they go to 100 and although we use Willoughby and Phillips in tandem with Blackwell (who went off to have his ankle treated with longish hair and returned with a kind of distinguished shaved head with grey highlights) not a lot happens as Rudlph moves past 50 on a moderately benign pitch in glorious conditions.
Ian gets Gale after he has put on over 100 with Rudolph for 61 at 185 but that is it really. The Rudolph hundred comes inevitably around the 200 up for Yorkshire and Brophy lets us know that he's not particularly affraid of the condtions with a boundary off his first ball. Everything is a bit late and it's nearly 5 before Tea comes with 64 overs down and 238 for 3 on the scoreboard.
And after Tea the punishment continues and there's no real relief. Ian B wheels away at the OP and Thomas and de Bruyn try their arm at the other but the score move on towards 300 and passes it in the 81st with neither batsman in any kind of bother with Brophy going past 50 and Rudolph heading towards an inevitable 150. At the end of the 83rd the partnership is 130 and it's 315 for 3 with 13 overs to go.
Then Brophy gets an absolute shocking decision and is LBW (I have no idea how) for 70. He was on one knee sweeping, missed a ball going down the side and gets called halfway up the first run. The bat goes swinging as he looks skywards and the Press box, to a man, call the decision 'eccentric'. But it will be 315 for 4 n the morning papers and Brophy walks.
The Rudolph ton and a half comes off 266 balls with a six and 16 fours and the Tykes go to 329 off 87. This is not a result pitch at the moment so expect some post somewhere from Kentish Townie before the end of Friday. But Blackie starts the 'fightback' as he foxes Rudolph and has him caught behind for 155 at 330 for 5. Yorshire only have 4 supposed recognised batsmen so it may still turn out to be a better day than it looked a mere 15 minutes ago. Rashid nearly becomes an early victim as he drops a chance very close to Neil Edwards diving to his left in the close fielding position.
He finally goes to de Bruyn to another LBW at 335 and the pendulum swings to the home side as Langer keeps the old ball and gives Blackie his head. 336 for 6 and instead of expecting Yorkshire to go over 350 in the day we now wonder if Somerset can get the whole lot out before stumps.
At 339 with 6 balls to go Langer takes the new ball and gives it to Willoughby to employ around the wicket. First ball is a considerable distance down the leg side. The second is a much nicer piece of bowling across the batsman. The rest is quite a fair bit of new ball stuff but no more wickets and it's 339 for 6 at the end of a long day.
Day 2
After the first day's play I would have happily put money on Yorkshire batting until Monday afternoon but things change. After Rudolph, things seem to have been a little easier and Willoughby cleared most of the tail very eqrly with very few runs added. Bresnan and Pyrah went at 341, Wainwright at 351 and Patterson lasted alittle while longer before expiring at 372. The damage was not extensive and the conditions suggested that we had a long slog but on a low and slow wicket.
Didn't quite work out that way though. Trescothick set himself for a big innings but both Edwards and Langer went in the early 20's and from then on we were chasing a game that Bresnan and Patterson were determined to take away from us.
The conditions didn't seem to change but we certainly found ways of getting out quite regularly. Hildreth hit just over 40 but went one side of 100 while Marcus passed 50...just beforfe going the other side.
Kieswetter put down an anchor but only Caddick (28) and Willoughby (18) stayed with him. The latter managed to get through to the end of play and then on...
Day 3
...got us past the follow on total before being the last one out at 258 leaving Craig not out on a very useful 67. We were about Rudolph's score behind at this point and facing a hard fight to stay in this one.
But Willoughby and Caddick got down to business and removed Rudolph and Lyth in the first 5 minutes of the second phase of the game - 2 for 0 and hope in the eyes of another impressive crowd. McGrath, Gale, Brophy and Bresnan all made a start but found Alfonso Thomas in better form this time around.
He took the first three and left the hard working Blackwell to have the fourth caught behind with only 104 added to the score.
Rashid and Pyrah put up more of a fight but Willoughby and Blackwell worked with the rampant Thomas (5 for 46) to ensure that Yorkshire only managed 208 before we pulled the curtain down.
We need 323. We finished the day with 12 but all 10 wickets. Possible? Most definitely? Probable? Well the first session will tell us that story. If we get to lunchtime with few losses and a decent scoring rate (we need about 3.5 an over - higher than any innings in this game so far) then we have the resources. Do we have the will and the confidence?
We've taken a number of games in the back stretch after looking lame in the first part of the race... can we go into the short stuff with another one in the bag? Well it's there to win or lose.
Day 4
Opened with all three possible endings available. Not something anyone would have predicted at the end of Day 1. Our bowlers had kept us in this game but we had been chasing it for the majority of the time and now we were chasing 323 to pull off a remarkable victory and we had a day, over 90 overs and 10 wickets in the bag.
Unfortunately it didn't stay that way for long as Bresnan tempted first Marcus and then Neil to rash big heaves, both taken in the safe hands of Wainwright. 25 for 1 and then 33 for 2 was not what we were looking for and the loss of those two batsmen was going to come back to haunt us later in the day. Hoggard increased the misery by having Hildreth LBW (doubtful I believe - bad luck for the second time in one game) for 2 and then Patterson got the prize wicket of Langer for a mere 10 and we'd lost 4 for just over 50.
The chase looked lost and the game also looked lost when de Bruyn joined Blackwell at the wicket but the two men started to put the wheels back on the Somerset 'bus' and added nearly 100 before Ian was caught by Brophy off Hoggard at 142 for an excellent 64. It's a shame it went that way because the gentleman is in some kind of rich form and is only presently being pipped for the top spot in the Championship MVP by Tim Bresnan who is haiving a hell of a start to a season.
Kieswetter joined Zander with a whole bunch of stuff to do to save this game and they both got down to the job. Zander was taking absolutely no chances and seemed totally determined to see this game out. While these two were at the wicket there was a chance of a result for the home side and try as Yorkshire might with numerous bowling changes, the Somerset pair kept their eye on the ball and off the boundary fence into the afternoon.
At the 100 partnership point disaster struck as Craig was LBW to Patterson for 41. An excellent and very mature knock but there weere still over 20 overs to go! Alfonso Thomas arrived to partner his country man past 100 and hopefully towards 150 and safety. He is really no slouch with the bat and he provided sollid defence for 40 minutes and over 50 balls for his partner, allowing Zander to a fine century. The backbone of the second innings produced in a very difficult situation off 243 balls with nly 5 boundaries. Patience personified.
Thomas was finally bamboozled by Rashid, expecting one thing, getting another and losing his stumps at 277 with 5 overs of the day remaining and a Somerset victory well and truly not going to happen. What was required now was stolid defence from both de Bruyn and the newly arrived Caddick. It looked possible as we entered the fifth over from home but Rashid wasn't finished and he got one to rise a bit, passed Zander's defensive push and cliped his stump. Charl Willoughby stood before Yorkshire with 24 balls to survive and only Caddick for company. But the over was finished and Andy at least was on strike. But it didn't matter much because bresnan got one past him and bowled him with the first ball.
All over. We lost an absorbing contest by 40 runs...and di well to get that far really after rather lacklustre batting displays. If Marcus and Niel had kept their heads a little more would we have got the runs? Maybe but you win some and you lsoe some.
As somene said on this thread. If we'd been offered a second place spot in the Championship with a two point buffer after losing Caddick for most of the first third of the season would we have taken it?
Damn Right. We have lots to do but that's all going to come after the short stuff which starts in earnest on Wednesday.

The selection dilemma for Friday`s championship match against Yorkshire now definitely includes Andy Caddick as part of the happy puzzle.
According to Langer in one of the nationals today, Andy was absolutely `steaming`, in the nicest possible way, about being left out against Surrey.
Today, weather permitting, he is bowling for the Seconds against the Royal Navy at North Perrott and surely will have to be found - and deserve - a place against Yorkshire if he comes through without any reaction.
Meanwhile on the Tykes front, I notice that both Gough and McGrath failed to take the field against Lancashire yesterday, but are in the travelling party to Bristol tomorrow, as is Matthew Hoggard who broke a thumb last month.

Yeah, I think Hoggy will be back on Friday which will be a good test for our batsmen, I imagine.
It's great to think of Caddy being livid with Hurry/Rose/Langer. It should mean that the second they do let slip this dog of war then he will come out with even more of a ferocious bite than usual.

I can't see much change, probably Caddy for Jones.
Is Trig fit? If so, then he might come in for Thomas (or Big Ben).

If Pete's fit, I'm certain that he will play.
Thomas or Jones would appear to be most likely to miss out. I think Thomas impressed the skipper with his "fiery," spell at Ramprakash. Ben Phillips will, presumably, have impressed the skipper by dismissing Ramps in both innings.

Looking forward to renewing rivalry with you guys. We have numerous injury problems on the bowling front, a real worry for taking on your strong batting line up on a good batting pitch.
Gough will be playing in the Friends Prov match v Glous on Wed so I doubt he will play against you guys, Naved is out for another month, Hoggy should be fit, Kruis is out. Our bowling will probably line up Hoggard & Bresnan backed up by one of the young seamers (Hannon-Dalby or Sanderson), I think we will probably play 2 spinners Rashid and Wainwright (has done well in one day cricket yet to play 4 day).
McGrath should be OK, it was illness that saw him sit out the last day of the Lancs game.
All the best, to be honest with our weak attack I will be delighted to come out with a draw.

Unless you have no alternative at all, I'd be surprised if you do use two spinners for the game at our place. Our place is not exactly renowned as a spin bowler's paradise. Furthermore, it's a ground where mis-hits (straight) can, and often do, carry for six, so far from the ideal place for a young spinner to make his debut.

Nobody who was at the County Ground in Bristol today, to watch a decidedly average Yorkshire performance against a decidedly poor Glo`shire side, will miss too much sleep over our chance at Taunton this weekend.
On the Yorkshire bowling front - the opening attack of Bresnan and Hoggard looked hostile and accurate, with a good mix of deliveries,although they were helped by a green wicket unusual for Bristol. (Advice to Somerset`s openers: don`t play the show pony shots early on that accounted for the entire Glo`shie top order.)
This last point is particulary important as the follow-up Yorkshire bowling carried very little threat. Goughie looked only about 25 per cent fit and I shall be surprised if he plays at Taunton, while Rashid`s leg spin was innocuous, although in fairness the wicket didn`t suit him.
On the Yorkshire batting front, Craig White is still a solid anchor to the innings (something Glo`shire desperately needed); McGrath looked a sound batter but very ordinary bowler; and Rudolph exuded class but was very scratchy at the start of his innings. Memo: attack him early doors, as our soccer-playing friends would say.
But on a player-for-player basis, if we can repeat our away form in the championship, we should have the edge.
Oh yes. One last piece of advice to JL: break the Tykes run of winning tosses.

Somerset are now considering resting two of their seam bowlers aged over 30 for this match, in view of the long journey home from Kent tonight and the fact that the team have been on the road for three weeks now.
Andy Caddick and Mark Turner are on standby to replace them.
I imagine the two most likely candidates are Ben Phillips and Stephen Jones.

The wonderful David Foot writes that "it wouldn't have done for the county to remain the best for too long.The peacock arrogance of such attainment isn't a West Country attribute.The Somerset temparament revels in heady peaks just as long as they don't threaten to take on any kind of permanency;there must always be a few troughs to restore perspective"
I think whilst enjoying the good times we should remember that they taste so sweet because we know,deep down that they won't last forever.
For me being a Somerset cricket fan knows no equal and I know that we really are the best in the land,win,lose or draw.
Come on beauties,let's show them all some West Country spirit.

Darren Gough, who looked anything but fit in Bristol yesterday, will definitely miss the game. He has suffered a recurrence of his back injury and McGrath takes over as Yorkshire captain.

I don't think young would be the correct word LoL.
Yet to reach full maturity though exceedingly accomplished may be more appropriate.
Young Ted Tyler on the other hand seems to have been on form during that match against the Tykes.
Just to think,he would go on to teach Farmer Jack White the art of spinning,or flight as he was oft to point out.

I had always assumed that the origin was simply because a tyke was a terrier, and that perhaps the best known terrier was a Yorkshire Terrier.

There's not a lot happening for anyone on it today BJ. Blackie is working overtime and other than the odd one that keeps a bit low and a couple of one's where Cadd has got a bit of bounce it's all very easy.

It doesn't look like anything is changing at the moment. We got lucky at the end of the day and they've taken the new ball but it's gonna be a long game. But if it starts to break up then the third and fourth innings are going to be very interesting. Blackwell v Rashid....hmmm. Caddickl looks 'rusty' but he probably needs the whole of this game to get himself into rhythm
We've still got to get past that first part of our first innings without having a batting collapse...I'll be happier when that has been bypassed and we're moving towards 500 by lunchtime on Sunday with 6 wickets remaining. Then this will be a game.
One of the wonderful things about this format is that there's time for a game to change and change again and no-ne knows what is gonna happen until the last day!

The only good news at the moment is that things are not entirely going Durham's way at the Rose Bowl. If Hants win that and we fail to save this one, then the first division table would have a really bunched up look, going into the 20:20 intermission.

However, in theory, our only outside chance of winning this one is probably to follow-on. They will be aware of this, of course, so I wonder whether Yorks will simply bat again. If they do bat again, I think we'll need to see a very long spell by Ian in full defensive mode to try and delay a Yorks declaration for as long as humanly possible.

What was the postmortem postings saying after the Kent FPT when the batting was poor and the captain said "There were too many passengers" in the that game, "it was not important the real important game is the Championship against Yorks".
I think Somersets batting line up looks very strong "on Paper" but it appears in the last 2 matches every one is leaving it to someone else to score runs. Not very professional.

Even though the spectators are condensed to half the ground, the crowd for a Saturday was very good (It was the second day and not the last day which a Saturday normally is), even the two temporary stands were well populated.

Neil Edwards has been receiving rave notices on the commentary for his fielding. This makes the fact that he is routinely ignored for one-day cricket all the more mystifiying. He is an aggressive batsman and if he's also good in the field, why on earth wouldn't we include him for one-day stuff?

Apparently every player on both sides has sworn that the pitch has nothing in it for the bowlers. But not many folks are making runs. Part of the relatively low scoring, apparently, has been due to Trevor Jesty being trigger-happy on LBW decisions. Otherwise, I get the impression that there's been some complacent batting on both sides, particularly against the less famous bowlers.

Haven't managed the last couple of days but Day 1 was played on a very slow pitch with nothing happening for anyone really. I therefore have to assume (as Rashid and Blackwell aren't getting buckets of wickets) that batting is either frustrating or loads of willlow men are giving their stumps away cheaply.
Good to see Alfonso doing something this innings because he was not impressing anyone near me during the first Yorkshire bat. It looks very much like Friday where Blackie bowled loads at the OP and Langer swopped and changed his seamers at the River end in the hope someone would get something.

Oh, I don't doubt for a moment that he is a tremendous keeper now, and will become even better. Nice too that he has got into the runs recently. I fear we will lose him when he is qualified, but good luck to the young man.

However, in terms of bowling, they're queuing up for England at the minute. The incumbents seem unlikely to be dropped and then you've got Flintoff, Harmison, Jones, Hoggard and maybe Tremlett in reserve anyway.

Alfonso Thomas must like playing against Yorkshire.
His best return while playing for Warwickshire at the tail end of last season was 4-109 out of a Yorkshire total of 561-7dec at Scarborough.
He hit 24 and 42 with the bat also - the second top score in both Warwickshire innings. Hopefully, he won`t be needed to bat tomorrow though!

Well, with the stupid money now on offer, it seems reasonable to assume that many county cricketers will give the opposite answer to that which will probably be produced by our poll.
I dare say that it would do our CC chances no harm at all, if one or two of our CC rivals progressed in the 20:20 and we didn't. Distractions and all that...

In fairness to LoL his point is a very good one.
The four day matches this season have been absolutely stunning,so difficult to predict.
I think we'll win tomorrow,around tea-time by four wickets.
I'm trying to be fair to Yorkshire now as they have put up a good fight.
We'll have no squeaky bums tomorrow please.

I thought our CC matches are easy to predict? First couple of days don't matter a jot, we'll end up fighting into a position to have a chance of winning.

If your reference above, Grockle, is to my comment made at 17.17 today, I think Wurzel will quite happily accept it as part of the obligatory banter of this site - and certainly much less personally critical than many recent exchanges. What a good batsman Merv was, and although I don't remember him as very fast-scoring I do remember that when he got hold of one it went high and handsome for six.
Isn't it great when a County Championship match goes into the final day with all three results possible, but you really do feel that we just could win it..

Somerset have been in some very good games of cricket this year, if anybody want a good advert for four day cricket they only need to watch Somerset play.
The last two day's have been the most enjoyable cricket I have watched for some time, Yesterday Somerset battling with the bat and today doing the job with the ball, (who would want to watch one day stuff after this)
What ever the outcome tomorrow it has been a very good match.

Days two and three at Whitgift and then days two and three at Taunton have been by all accounts the best possible advertisement for the four-day game. And they were both well attended, which almost certainly added to the zeal of the performers. Interesting, isn't it, that on both occasions the days concerned were Saturday and Sunday.
Need I say more about how regrettable it is that so few CCgames straddle a weekend?
Perhaps another poll is needed - among players - as to which form of the game they enjoy most and on what days of the week they most enjoy playing on.

It's an extremely important day for us today. If we win, we establish a significant lead in the CC before the break. If Yorkshire win, they will do the same. Meanwhile, Notts are not out of their match against Lancs yet, though a draw is probably more likely and a better result for us. I am (rather unwisely, perhaps) assuming that Hants will beat Durham - it will definitely not be a draw, given that good weather is predicted everywhere.
Best of luck to Trescothick and Edwards this morning; they need to survive the first half hour and ideally still be there at lunch time.
I have a very busy day ahead of me, but will keep the scorecard on my screen throughout.

Had a very pleasurable hour or so on Saturday morning with FE and SS in the menagerie family area with an impressive array of young Grocklees. Nice to put faces to names.
As for the cricket? Dunno, we were gossiping too much about this place, but it was a lovely day for it. Hoggard looked quick, that's all I know.

The way I see it is that, in the six games so far, the bowling has generally outperformed our batting. And this, in-spite of the fact that the Cadmeister has been out injured for all but this game and is obviously not yet back to his best for this one. It’s been great to see folks like Jonah and Thomas putting their hands-up with five-fors in the 2nd digs of recent games.
I strongly suspect that the difference is competition for places. We have competition for places in the bowling department – even without AC, but there’s not a lot doing on that front in the batting department, especially if the powers-that-be are automatically intent on just selecting De Bruyn every week.

Have to say that's the position I have problems with, especially when Peter Trego is fit. The first 4 pick themselves at the moment and Ian is certainly in for the 5/6 spot but so...in my humble opinion is Trigger. Our front seven should be;

I'm afraid to say that he's not really been solid, either, at least not in the long form of the game. I don't have a problem with him being in the one-day team but if he doesn't make runs in this dig then Mr Rose needs to give someone like Wes a chance in the CC instead. I'm not advocating wholesale change, heaven forfend, but I'd have thought the Neil Edwards' place is also in jeopardy. Not sure what form Francis has been in in the 2s, or who's been opening there, but Neil hasn't got so much in the bank that he can keep on getting low scores.
I imagine he's unlikely to play much in the next 3 weeks anyway,and the picture may have changed by the time 4-day CC cricket returns, so maybe it's a bit academic.

AG, it's interesting how little Bond seems to have bowled this morning - Tremlett and Tomlinson seem to have done must of the work. Hants' lack of a spinner may be costly to them today especially! Of course, if Trem and Tom get the last Durham wicket, then Bond will have had a sensible rest.

The odds must, at lunch, be heavily in favour of Yorkshire. But it seems from the radio commentary (which, I have to say I have found to be very fair, so far as one can judge from afar) that, following a sketchy start by Blackwell, he and de Bruyn have been gathering runs pretty easily in the last 30 minutes or so. So, all is not yet lost. (Of course, if Somerset had been 60 odd for 4, chasing over 300, in a one day match, the match would have been effectively over by now and there would have been very little to play for. One of the great beauies about the first class game, of course, is that - discounting the possibility of a tie - three results are possible, rather than the two which are possible in one day games.)

No-one replaced Wood as opener, SP. Wood scored 10, I believe, in the first innings. He may be injured or he may have been demoted due to a real lack of form? Franks seems to me to be a strange choice of replacement, however.

As for today's game, if we want to win the game, I believe we can't afford to lose any wickets in this middle session. If we're 215-4 at tea, a win would certainly be conceivable.
If we want to draw, then we must lose a maximum of no more than two wickets in this session, I believe.
If we're seven down, or worse, at tea Yorkshire would become prohibitive favourites.
As is always the case recently, I'd feel better about the run-chase if we had PT still to come.

Frankly, the pattern of every innings other than their first one has been that wickets have tumbled against the new ball. That prospects looms in only 13 overs time. I believe we'll have to face 21 overs of the new ball.
Frankly, I think the correct approach is to continue to try to shut up shop as we'll probably lose wickets to the new ball.
IF we do want to 'go for it,' in any meaningful sense, then it would probably make most sense to attack in the 13 overs before the new cherry is taken. Indeed, if we did that, it might make Yorks a bit hesitant to fully attack in the field when they do take the new ball.

If anyone still believes that there is little difference between the two divisions of the County Championship I believe they are deluded. I don't think Justin Langer believes that.

If Yorkshire was the yardstick then maybe Somerset are at about 2 feet. Yorkshires victory shows that it is possible to bowl a side out in the 4th Innings at Taunton particularly if you have a quality Spinner. With regards to somersets Batting , Trescothick and Hildreth need to get runs, the top order batting is non exsistent and I believe no one can or should have their place, former England player or not, guaranteed, especially with a squad of 28

Frankly this is a ridiculous summation. Yes the top order didnt produce in this game, but Trescothick is averaging 63 this cc season - what more do you want from your ex england player? I think it deserves a place! Even Hildy is averaging 30 odd, not brilliant but not a bad start!

Galling to get within 4 overs of saving the game but we deserved nothing after being outplayed for most of the game. Congratulations to Yorkshire. Commiserations are deserved for Blackwell, De Bruyn, and Kieswetter though no one else. Hopefully the key players particularly bowlers can have a good long rest and be ready for Kent.

I don't know about anyone else but what I would like - more than anything - would be for us to commence another 4-day game on Wednesday. Back on the horse and all that. Caddy to take 12 for 80 and Ian to make 180 in 155 balls as SCCC win by an innings.

Can anyone confirm what second XI cricket is set for the next 20 days? Caddy needs a good long bowl. Neil Edwards can practice some shot selection and trying to bat for a long period of time. Pete should surely test out his injured side to see if he's ready to return.

I wondered how many AGod posts in succession it would take before the little matter of the £2.5 million 20/20 Champions League first prize money would get a mention, let alone all the dosh for second, third and fourth places.
As I`ve pointed out before, this is 25 times the County Championship first prize and probably enough to put the third phase of the County Ground redevelopment back on the agenda.
No county could ignore this opportunity for a massive financial windfall. Somehow I don`t think we will be resting any of our top men unless we fall out of contention in our group at a very early stage.

Really good game but we were well up against it once Craig was LBW. Rashid bowled well at the death and Thomas held them up really well against the new ball. Once Zander went it was only a matter of time.
And Averageside's summation - storming. Can't wait for the one after we win a game it will be even more awesome...oh no it won't of course....because we never get one. Ahh Well

You think its an absurdity Paul from Shepton? Well did you see the shots that were played by the Top order star batsman again? You can take as many swipes as you like I express my views and others can disagree or agree . I could use my postings to be critical of other posters but prefer to stick to the Somerset cricket issues and leave juvenile comments to others.

Let's put things into perspective. We started the day having hauled ourselves back into contention from a dreadful position-all credit. The win was a possibility but although I would have been delighted with it it was a big target. 300+ in a fourth innings is never easy. I did hope we would draw but there were several times in the day when that looked a forlorn hope, so 4 overs and 40 runs short is honourable defeat. And let's be honest,if after 1/3rd of the season we had anticipated being 2 points of top we'd have settled for that at the beginning of April.
So we put the championship to bed and see what comes out of the 20/20. It doesn't turn me on, but of there's a Somerset team in it then I want us to win.

What a day to be off-line.
It sounds like a superb game,well done Yorkshire I think we can both take plenty from it.
It's not the time to be critical of anyone,let the dust settle and then have a look at areas where we can improve.
I'm sure those who didn't quite get it right today will know they've made a mistake and will hopefully make good at the next oppurtunity.
The Championship race is still on.
I don't think there can ever have been a better advert for County cricket than our matches this season.

A superb days cricket yesterday with all results possible right up to the end.I don't know if the result is going to improve my health but the sunshine surely will.
I met Omari Banks and his beautiful fiance Sereena along with Charl Willoughby which was a nice experience and I also seemed to be always bumping into Mr T Driver.Of all places to meet him I became aquainted with him in The Princess Royal at lunchtime watching the game on ceefax.I can recomend this pub as a decent place for grub.

It was a great day's cricket and, at tea, all four results were still possible. From the depths of 54-4 Blackie and Zander fought back to a position where we were prob just ahead. Hoggy got Blackie with new ball but Craig showed what a fine talent he is with a fine controlled knock. Zander did the right thing and put defence ahead of ambition (his century only contained 5 fours) but while he was there we were in contention.
Adil Rashid was getting quite lot of turn and varied his deliveries well. The one that got Zander turned past the bat to clip off stump. His dismissal of the Fonz was superb bowling - Fonz had been leaving everything that turned away from the stumps and he was done by a well disguised off-break.
All the Tykes' bowlers bowled well - and agree that Paterson/Pattison bowled well - but so did Hoggy, Bresnan and Rashid.
A great day from 4 day cricket - and to get within four overs of a draw from 54-4 showed a resilience and determination that wouldn't have been there two seasons ago.
JL has said again that CC1 cricket is as good as Oz Grade cricket. Can't wait for the next match in CC.

Hello all Grocklers. I have just returned home after the Taunton game,and what a game! Wonderful weather throughout,a game that fluctuated to and fro and at least from my point of view a great result.I would like to say thanks to the Somerset supporters for thei friendship during the game and their sporting acceptance of the result.I had a most enjoyable week,including a trip to Minehead on the WSR and a visit to Hestercombe Gardens which are even lovelier than on my last visit 3 years ago.
One disappointment;I couldn't track down any of you good people.I asked various sources where I might find Grockle or Tractor or anyone else but there was usually a puzzled look.A chap in the office had heard of the Grockles website (he was anxious to point out that it was unofficial),but all he could suggest was that he knew someone walked about in a T-shirt with Grockle on.
Anyway thanks again to Somerset in general,maybe some of you will come to Scarborough in September.

Thanks for your generous remarks TRU. Very glad for you that you enjoyed the game and the result, though obviously we were not totally thrilled. Very disappointed you did not meet the great Tractor, but he is a retiring soul. I hear he's heading for Scarborough and so I hope you find each other there.
