With the Olympics only hours away it seems fitting that we face Notts in a vital four dayer today. This could be a deciding game in our Championship year and the rain could be the deciding factor! 12 have been named with Steffan Jones the doubt with an early morning fitness test to decide on his inclusion. We could either start our move towards the top or the foot of the table based on this one

Last year this was the vital rubber against Notts at home and away. We came out victorious at their place and went on to take the title. This year the two up and coming counties are battling it out at the top of the next division and the results of the 40 pointer could decide the County Champions for 2008.
Our form has taken a dip in general and there is no doubt that the longer format offers the best chance of honours in this season. However the weather isn't helping and our time away from home has been long and not particularly inspiring. It is hoped that today any rumours of divisions and loss of form are put aside and we get down to the impoprtant stuff from the start (at present the weather suggests that it will be on time).
Somerset have named 12 but Steffan Jones will have a late fitness test and so I would suggest that the likely eleven will not include him unless there are no doubts about him while others need treatment. Niel Edwards seems to have fallen out of favour for an opening spot so the captain will open and Zander will take the number 3 spot
Therefore I expect the following to be out there at 11;
Trescothick, Langer, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Trego, Kieswetter, Phillips, Thomas, Caddick, Willoughby
I'd argue it is our strongest line-up but it wouldn't be lessened by Edwards taking his place in a more 'English' line-up. However, Zander would have a case for performances picking the side and he has been a most consistent addition to the line-up.
Strong seam attack in overcast conditions I would suggest with Ian Blackwell providing our only spin option. I'll be there for some of this game (weather permitting) so there will be updates on both the frontpage and the forum during playing hours. See you down there or online. The side is almost as suggested but Steff passed the 'fitness test' and took the place of Ben Phillips
We nearly started on time (11:05) and I get there just before the 10th over with us batting with the princely sum of 16 (and I saw 4 of them) for 2! The pitch is almost in front of the new River stand - the sight cover is actually on the far side of the Botham stand and the rope is a good 5 to 8 yards from the boundary on the scoreboard stand. But the outfield is very heavy...boundaries to the new stand side along the ground aren't making it so there's no real chance of fours on the surface to the much longer "shop" side.
The damage? Langer LBW Shreck with 2 on the board and Mr Trescothick said hello to Mr Pattinson for the first time by wafting a catch to Ealham on the same score. Notts are attacking with 3 slips, a gully and a sort of short mid off while Hildreth and de Bruyn try and sort out the damage and get this innings going. It's very overcast but a bit humid so the two Nottinghamshire bowlers are putting their all into making this a true disaster. Big innings from both our men are required for this day to get back on track.
For the 13th pver Notts change the bowler at the River and we see Andre Adams for the first time in this game. But when Zander drives at a full length ball and deposits the snick into the hands of third slip, it is off Pattinson instead. He goes for 9 and we have the massively impressive 23. In comes Peter Trego at number 5 - some may look at this in surprise but given the present position on the pitch he is probably a better bet than either Craig or Ian and hopefully will be the savious of this dire first hour!
But no! It gets even worse as first Trigger is comprehensively cleaned up by Adams with only 1 to his name and then the man in need of a good score, Ian Blackwell, misjudges one from Pattinson, fails to keep it down and plops it in to a fielders hands for another single. 24 for 5. I come back upstaris to report on this just as Hildreth puts a wide one towards first slip and Lo and Behold! the fielder doesn't drop it - fielding practice and his first loose shot just when we don't need it 35 for 6. Alfonso is in at number 8. What kind of total we can expect I have absolutely no idea but 3 figures is a pipe dream at the moment!!
The first real supporting applause finally arrives in the 26th over when Thomas goes down on one knee and smacks a boundary to the new seating to bring up the 50. But four runs later the pain of watching this game intensifies as a defensive stance from Kieswetter to Adams doesn't keep the ball out and his middle stump goes flying past the wicketkeeper. 54 for 7 and Steffan has had almost no time to settle down for a bit of a rest before bowling. It's just before 1:00 in the first day and we are trying to make this look even slightly like a reasonable total by asking the bowlers to hold our innings together and get it over 100 by some miracle. Even Mark Ealham, who has taken over from the OP end just before lunch, looks menacing against us!!
Lunch beckons at 59 for 7 with 28 overs completed. We're three from one of the lowest score milestones (62 against Notss at Bath) but we are a little further from making this game naything like competitive. There were calls for Justin to shut up shop and bring the boys in to give our lot a chance with the conditions as he did last season in a losing cause. Not sure myself. The weather doesn't look like it is going to break today either way and we don't look long for this batting lark so we may get a chance at them after lunch unless Alfonso and Steffan have other plans. If the sun comes out of course we will find the conditions change drastically and we may find ourselves facing the Notts batsmen on a dry featherbed with three days to go. The weather sggests another scenario....and at present there are few Somerset suporters on the ground who would not give up their day at the cricket for long, heavy and prolonged rain.
We pass the 62 mark and at least Steffan shows the rest how it should be done with two majestic straight drives to the boundary off Pattinson - best two shots of the day so far. Unfortunately Alfonso hasn't got his eye in as well as he leaves one that's a bit too close and he is bowled by Adams for 19. It's a real sad way to go when you've got your bat above your head and the wickets come apart! 77 for 8 with our last hope Mr Andrew Caddick striding out.
Pattinson has something to show young Andrew after the latter's comments about his selection ahead of Hoggard and Harmison for the a Test. At 90 he gets one to move away ever so slightly and Ried takes his first catch of the innings to send the elder statesman back to the hutch. Charl comes out in bright sunshine and the pitch is set to dry out and give our bowlers no help whatsoever.
Steffan moves to top scorer with another impressive smash to the boundary off Mr Pattinson. So Charl decides to get us to a hundred with an sort of 'forearm smash' to the Botham off Adams for four. A single brings the Welshman down on strike and after refusing a single he follows suit with another smash to the same place. It all comes to an end as Charl tries to smack one into the churchyard and is caught by Shreck in front of the CA and it's all over for 106. Five for Pattinson and not a lot at all for us!!
The Reply
Welcome back Matt Wood who strides out to open the Notts innings. Unfortunately Andy Caddick is there to welcome him as well with the best ball of the day which bounces and leaves him - but with just enough of a tickle to give Langer a first slip catch ad our first wicket with 2 on the board. It's a miracle Woody doesn't walk back up the wrong steps! Willoughby comes in to bowl the River end opener in brilliant sunshine - is it all going to be different? Well it had better be different because the pitch inspector is here and we've lost eleven already at 2:50 with Caddick getting predigious bounce and 4 runs off the first 3 overs of the Notts reply.
And it's 90 minutes of cat and mouse with the advantage going between the batsmen and the bowlers. Alfonso being given some clatter to the 'shop' and then going past the bat and having a very considerable LBW appeal turned down (probably because the batsman hit it). Charl doing a lot of around the wicket stuff and making them play on more than one occasion. Caddy looking good from both ends with steepling bounce. But nothing to hand and the score moving steadily towards our meagre offering. Just before the tea interval we se Pete Trego for the first time and he makes the breakthrough with a neat little inswinger that fools Shafayat and takes his bails off. 67 for 2 and a possible decider of a session to come given the rain forecast for the next few days. We need a good spell and the pitch inspectors involved because over 14 wickets have gone down to really think we can get anything from this game.
According to the umpires the ball is still doing something but our bowlers aren't quite getting it in the right places and so Notts are getting too many four shots off the backfoot. It is looking a bit easy after Wagh fires a sixe into the new seats. But Trego keeps at him and he complacently flips one in the same general direction to be caught by Thomas diving to his right for 46. 82 for 3. We could have been 84 for 4 in fact when Justin misses a slip catch from Voges. There were questions about whether it carried but the fact that the captain stays down for a considerable period of time suggests that it did.
He therefore sighs a huge one of relief when Voges is flumuxed by Willoughby's swing and is found to be LBW in the 28th at 89 for 4. The 14th wicket of the day and the inspector is still here.
The visitors pass our total with a boundary to non fine 'Third Wurzel' in the 31st and the Patel and Swann look steady. We still haven't seen Steffan Jones in the attack but Trego gets another one to go away and Swann edges his defensive shot to Trescothick at 108. 24 overs to go and we're halfway through the second innings!!
It's therefore time to check the possible fine situation. Thanks to David Green in the press box there is a conversation with the inspector (Mr Jameson) who suggests that though the ball was swinging too much this morning the conditions didn't justify a 106 total. The difficulties of preparing for this game given the rain was also taken into account. The game's present position has far more to do with technique than preperation and so it is highly unlikely that any action will be taken against the pitch - good news. Thank you Mr Green.
With 20 overs to go it's 119 for 5 and with 17 to go Steffan Jones comes on for his first spell with the rag that is the ball!! 130 for 5 - can the man from Wales a) get the ball changed? b) do anything to take this game into another interesting period? The box of balls is coming on and the umpire is going off with them, up the steps into his changing room and back down with something. We then get spectacle of Barrie Leadbetter sprinting back onto the pitch with a ball he likes better than any provided.
The 150 arrives before the "10 to go sign" goes up but Steffan and Andy are making no real headway against two batsmen now well set. The light is getting dark and gloomy by 6 o'clock and there are doubts we'll make it to a 6:45 ish finish. There's enough time for Patel to go to 50 off 72 balls with 7 fours at 168. He and Ried are starting to move away now at it is soon 179 as the byes start to flow and both batsmen go looking for runs. Charl nearly gets Patel but the ball falls just short of him. There's another discussion about the ball and Barrie does some more sprinting to get another one. While that is going on of course everyone has to have a drink and then we are back in play with 9 to go and 200 looking likely. Thomas bounces Patel in poor light and we all think he's trying to get off. But that isn't the case. The next one he sends down, Patel tries to cut and de Bruyn catches him in the deep at 182 for 56 - he looks really god this guy. Mark Ealham comes out to face the last 8 overs with Trego replacing Caddy at the OP.
But the umpires decide it is bad light with 7 to go at 185 for 6 and we've finished a truly strange days cricket with 16 wickets gone and 291 runs scored. What the hell happens with the rest of this game is down to the weather I'm afraid. Notts are 79 runs ahead with four wickets in hand and that could be a winning situation in this game!!

Day 2
There's a bloke who plays for Notts called Chris Read. He keeps wicket and a few years ago he kept Rob Turner from his just desserts - an England tour by being heralded as the young pretender for Alec Stewart's gloves. Well he's been pretty much ignored since then - partly because of some daft misjudgement against the West Indies (I think) where he squatted to avoid a bouncer and was bowled through his legs by a well disguised slow ball.
I tell you this bloke could be a possible candidate for that place Ambrose and Prior are fighting over. He keeps well and, when he's only got the tailender to keep him company he farms the strike so well that Shreck manages 2 while he takes the Notts end total to 230 and is own score to 74 not out - adding 41 to his overnight score.
In between, Thomas and Trego got among the back end of the Notts order Ealham at 186 (Thomas), Adams at 189 (Trego) and Pattinson (Thomas) at 193. But the 124 lead the visitors end on has a lot to do with their captain. Good batting under pressure at the tail end? Now which side needs some of that from a man who wears gloves?
And so we manage to pull ourselves back into this game by the seat of our pants and thanks to the efforts of our bowlers. Now we need the front end to actually do its job for a change and get us more than a Langer and Trescothick partnership to defend in their second innings. Getting past 128 is the first target.
Well it looks like Justin has given himself a good talking to and threatened himself with being dropped down the order if he doesn't pull his socks up. Because he does.... Marcus and the boss take it to the opposing attack and go past 50 in 8 overs - mostly at the expense of Mr Pattinson who goes for 40 off just under 6.
114 when the rain takes hold at about 4:15 but 15 shots for 4 in that so it's patience with a smack for the bad ball (and our England prospect seems to have bowled quite a number). It's 5:45 and the rain is bucketing down with the whole ground swathed in covers and no-one sitting outside. It's unlikely that we'll see any more today because it is grey and very very wet.
Play is abandoned for the day at 5:00 with the rain still lashing down. We've put this game back on a semi-even keel and start tomorrow 10 runs adrift with everyone ready to contribute. Can we all pray that they do and spare a particular bit of your discussion with your chosen diety for Mr Ian Blackwell who needs something in the bank from this game in terms of above average performance figures.
Day 3
A better start to the day weather-wise. Bright and clear with a fresh breeze that might keep the rain away. Justin and Marcus are back at the crease with a big day ahead with luck. But the luck isn't there and Justin snicks one to second slip from Shreck with only 22 added to the overnight 114 but at least we clear the deficit with only one down. For them Shafayat is keeping wicket because it looks like the dislocated finger that forced Read off in the afternoon yesterday has kept him away from the gloves again today. I suppose that is in the hope that they can deal with it in case he needs to bat to save the game!!
Zander comes out to help MT put the score past the 150 mark in the first hour. We hope for the same again before he or Marcus leaves the field for anything other than lunch breaks. The pair are pushing the score along with a number of well run twos alongside the normal Trescothick boundaries.
Too good to last? Well seems so as Marcus follows his captain with a slip dismissal. This time it's Andre Adams providng the ball and Mark Ealham providing the hands but the result is 168 for 2 and our big gun gone for 81 after providing the little edge. Now we do need to see something because this is the part of the game where we seem to stall or falll apart. After the two openers leave the field the middle order has been struggling to keep up the scoring rate while keeping their wickets intact and we cannot have that today under any circumstances. Therefore it is down to James Hildreth to start the move of the recognised batsmen to a score that we can use to either bring this game to a draw or even a win. That means batting out the day without relying on the tail to scrabble the odd 20 or so each with whichever member of the 3,4,5 or 6 has a bit of form in hand on this occasion.
172 for 2 after 50 overs with Zander looking to push the score on as James looks to settle himself and it all looks good until they put their spinners on. de Bruyn starts by slog sweeping Swann to the new seat boundary but the next ball he tries to drive and loses his off bail as the ball goes through the gate - 186 for 3 and Langer puts Craig Kieswetter into the fray who starts with a straight six into Old Pavilion off the second spinner Patel. But the spinners gain the psychological advantage by keeping the two batsmen stranded on 199 during the lunch interval despite their best efforts in the last two overs.
After the break we move over the barrier with the first ball from Swann. The theory seems to be that Craig is in as a kind of 'lunch watchman' to ensure no collapse either side of the break. He seems to have the role of steering Hildreth to a big score while the 'big guns' of Trego and Blackwell wait in the wings for a big push should this partnership establish a decent base. But there are plans and then there's reality. Kieswetter snicks Pattinson for 8 and it's 208 for 4 (or 85 for 4 depending on how you want to look at it). In comes Ian Blackwell with a situation made for him to put all the 'conspiracy theorists' out of their misery. Can he do what we really all want him to do?
NOPE. He tries to put Pattinson into the new stand seats and is caught on the boundary by Franks with 223 on the board. Justin will be unhappy...and he has the right to be I'm afraid. 99 for 5 is not a position we wanted to be in and I'm afraid Ian was probably not sent in to hit the skin off the ball wth huge sixes into the crowd. Peter Trego now has a real job to do alongside James who is doing what is certainly required of him and staying there!
So....I do for the young man who for some inexplicable reason comes dancing down the pitch to Swann, gives the ball a huge swipe and skies it into Shreck's hands at 230. Justin will be apoplectic and has every right to be - daft as a brush and no need whatsoever for it. Alfonso is the next man in to try and return this innings to some vestige of sanity but I think this one has gone and probably will do so today! And in all honesty it deserves to based on our batting efforts to win it.
Thomas does his job commendibly and he and Pete move the score on by 42 before Pete is the one to feather one to Shafayet at 272. It's not enough but the tail is once again showing the front end how to hang around!! Jones strides out, without a lot of fear and they put Pattinson on with the new ball to fire him out. He bounces him, tries to york him and then tries a second bouncer which Steff helps over the in field to the boundary. So Pattinson sends a rocket down which our Welshman sends back past him to the OP boundary. The England man then bounces him twice to finish the over...but we take the honours I think. I only hope they keep trying to bounce and intimidate Mr Jones because he's better than that and will belt them all over the place if they assume he's some kind of late innings rabbit.
Meanwhile at the other end A Thomas is continuing to do his job but that ends when Shreck gets one past him and takes his off stump out. 291 for 8 - with Andy Caddick in at 10 and together they take us over 300 with a Jones boundary. By Tea it's 312 for 8 with Jones putting up a real fight and Caddick giving him as much of the strike as possible. Excellent stuff why the hell can't we see this earlier in an innings? Once again we start dicussing the strategy of reversing the order and getting the bowlers to take the shine off the ball so the 'real' batsmen can play the ball with a little less 'fizz'. Hmmmmmm!
Day 4
Well we're playing. It's grey but windy and it's 85 for 3 at 11:15. Caddick and Thomas are bowling to a crowd of about 150. The bowlers are sending down a lot of four balls or Notts have been told to get on with it. Someone came out from the opposng dressing room and they've started hitting out. Adams was caught on the boundary but off a no ball from Caddick and his next ball went into the new stand as the 'runs required' moves under 100. It's ominous but getting brighter and Notts look more likely to win it than we do. Having said that Adams then tris to drive off Caddy and he absolutely totals him!! 116 for 4. In comes Voges as Willoughby takes over from Alfonso at the River end.
Well we seem to have lost the last two hours worth of posts so I'll recap!!
Charl bowled one ball before they took the sides off for rain at 125 for 4. After a light covering of water with only the pitch covered, the umpires returned to the pitch and seem to have decided that they would bring them out again. However, as the Somerset side congregated to come down the stairs, Phil Frost waved them back in and then the covers came on in force as the drizzle continued.
There was a Somerst conference with Justin, Andy Hurry and Phil just before lunch and then a lot of rain which resulted in all the covers coming on. Lunch was taken at 1:00 as usual.
It is now brighter but the covers stretch right from the new stand to the other boundary with the hard one's on the wicket and the run-up's under canvass. Even if they inspect after lunch (1:45?), there'll be no play for an hour after that.
First possible playing time? 3:00-ish and that is assuming no rain at all between now and then. Which is highly unlikely although not beyond the realms of possibility. Notts would probably like to get out there for about 15 and put us out of our misery. We'd probably now like to stay inside and take our points and a third place spot behind them and Durham.
I'll do the rest from home though because it's one of those days you hate where there is a tantalising possibility of something but it's probably not going to happen!!

After his second innings bowling at Horsham, I'm bound to wonder whether Willow is exhausted and/or carrying some kind of knock?
With Caddy back and approaching full form, would it be worth giving Willow a break? He's had a lot of bowling due to AC being unavailable.
That said, forecast for the game is glum and if the pitch sweats and/or the game is played under heavy cloud cover, we'd surely want Willow out there, even if he is knackered?
What about the balance of the side?
Ben Phillips didn't contribute much at Horsham. At the same time the second half our innings fell away quite badly on a flat pitch.
I wonder whether the team selection for the last one was partly to do with worries over AC and/or PT breaking down? Either way, both - touch wood - seem to be fit now.
I personally would be inclined - against a potentially good Notts pace attack - to revert to the balance we had for previous games (prior to the last two.)

Wes may deserve a go as a batsman but nothing about his bowling has suggested he should replace one of our tightest options with the ball.
The problem is that if you are going to risk a less parsimonious spinner in one day games then you can't really rest Willow there irrespective of Caddick's form (he never has been a tight one day bowler although in form he will get you wickets).
Phillips has to play if Willow doesn't I think.

Neil Edwards in for Ben Phillips, will give us an extra batsmen which will be needed against a strong bowling attack, i have always rated Shreck but he never seems to get even a mention when it comes to England selection.

Nottinghamshire bring in Andre Adams for Stuart Broad, who is with the England 13 at the Brit Oval. Otherwise, they are also unchanged - with Matt Wood set to open.

I think that Neil's absence from the Championship team of recent has been as a result of some personal circumstances; not on account of his form - which admittedly has not been as prolific as last year's.
It would be good to see him back anyway.

Losing the toss was always likely to be awful news in what, as Jim suggested, are probably ideal conditions for swing bowling. There should still be enought time lost to rain to not lose the game, even if we make a very poor first innings total, but it's really annoying to have lost a realistic shot at 4 or 5 batting points.

Lewry is the quintissential swing bowler. And it seldom swings at Old Trafford. Further suggestive evidence that conditions for swing are ideal today, as one would suspect.
If things don't improve rapidly, then unless the light is unplayable, I think we might see another 50 for 8 declaration by Langer, as we did at Lord's last year.

When James is out, Langer should declare as he did at Lord's.
I know it didn't work there, but there's little sense in struggling on until the rain comes and then having to bowl in far fresher conditions later in the match.
Better to be 60 playing 150 on first innings than 95 playing 250.

Exactly JIm - we need to take our chance to bowl NOW, IMO.
If Willow can bowl anything like what he did at Lord's (as opposed to Horsham) then there's a chance that we can be no more than 80 or 90 down on first innings.
If we struggle on and then it rains so that they get to come back another day when it's fresh, then it will then be all but impossible to win the game and very difficult to save it.

Sadly this was inevitable I think. Why are we playing 5 seamers when clearly an extra batsman was necessary. If you can't bowl them out with 4 seamers (plus DeBruyn) and a spinner then you never will.
THe question also is would we have them at 36 for 6 if we had one the toss? I don't think so. We've hardly had anyone in this trouble at this stage of an innings all year.
Most depressing.

After all, on paper this 'performance,' is redolent of the inept performance which we all of us saw at Lord's on Monday. Perhaps, if a casual approach to one day cricket (including not picking your best side) leads to a collapse in the one day form of the game, you may then bat like utter turkeys in the proper cricket, too?

I think there is merit in what AG says. THe lack of technique on Monday was galling. I think this is where our issues are rather than the weather etc.

He's already taken the blame (I ought to write this on the 'Other One'' really). I've talked to him and it's all his fault. Lots of past the bat bits in the middle spell and some good balls to boot. Pete got Shafayat with a nice little inswinger just before Tea and the cloud is looking a little more ominous so we can but hope.

Notts are better and younger than our team. Looks like an innings defeat to me as I've no faith in our batters whatever the conditions and also considering we are playing one too many seamers.
If we lose this we will be too far back to mount a challenge for the title as there are too many good teams in between. Our 30+ team appears to be creaking. Apart from Hildy, Trego and Kieswetter its a pretty old team.

I was going to say a few thinks about the play today but this report about covers it.
Somerset never recovered from losing openers Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick with only two runs on the board.

I have no doubt that Andy Hurry will (as did two of his predecessors - Kevin Shine and Mark Garaway) claim that Somerset "will take a lot of positives out of this game". The trouble is, that all these "positives" never materialise into anything that is subsequently witnessed on the field of play.
I have thus decided to be positive myself and cancel my proposed trip to Taunton, for the duration of the Notts. game, anyway.

It's a wiers start to the the day here. Bright sunshine followed by real dark clouds. If it's like yesterday then the whole thing will be over before 6 anyway.
The last time we were in this situation was in 1977 when we were bowled out by Essex for 90, allowed them to make 340 and then were bowled out again for 137 to lose in two days.
Let's hope that doesn't happen again!!

Absolutely no wind but as I look over the moor I can see some rather large banks of cloud moving up from the South West.
If that makes its way to Taunton it could get very wet.

He said there was "no question whatsoever," of him reporting Mr Frost. Although the pitch started damp, there had been heavy rain on Tuesday night and, in any event, wickets fell due to swing and very poor batting."
This is the second time this season that our top order have proven to be woefully inadequate in sub-optimal conditions at Taunton (Hants.) On that occasion, we got out of dodge as the pitch dried. But, as TP pointed out to me yesterday, the Notts attack is strong. I would say it's clearly stronger than the Hants reserve team attack that bundled us out in that other game. A recovery is, therefore, likely to be much more difficult.
Perhaps Mr Rose needs to seek out the odd technician or two in the winter who might be able to make a better fist of things against the moving ball - especially if we're going to consider sometimes deliberately watering the wicket, as we did vs Hants (though not, I believe, on this occasion)

We have not gone from a CC winning side to a bunch of losers in the space of a week.
We are still that same side that has thumped everybody off the park for the last two years.

I think one also has to say that, whatever the conditions, 106 is unacceptable unless you are facing a team whose bowlers are infinitely better than your batsmen. If we were facing Marshall, Holding, Roberts, Garner on a trampoline at the WACA, then fine.
But Pattinson and Shreck are hardly unequivocally better than our batsmen?
In conditions like this we surely need to apply ourselves better?

I'd go further, Jim, and propose that the Pitch Inspector's remarks suggest we took no such gamble. If the reason for our escaping censure is that "there had been heavy rain on Tuesday night", then the pitch would have started damp without any positive intervention to make it so.

Steffan hit one absolutely sweet on drive which looked so much better than anything else we'd seen all day. He always looks like a batsman coming out to do business and it doesn't matter who is bowling against him. I think we under-rate his batting prowess.
Shreck, Adams and Pattinson all bowled to the conditions in the morning session, the umpires suggested we were less able to do so after lunch and our batsmen didn't apply themselves to a very difficult environment particularly carefully.
Marcus and Ian both seemed to be surprised by balls and got through their shots early so popped up catches. Adams was a real handful and got both Craig and Alfonso with balls that fooled them.
If we had won the toss I have no doubt that we would have exploited the conditions in the same way and though on a slightly easier early afternoon pitch we struggled. Once conditions started to mirror those of the morning we took wickets as well.
The pitch inspector suggested that the rain made preparation of the pitch difficult but conditions should have been mamageable by batsmen.

Three Notts batsmen have faced down more than 80 deliveries.
For us, James and Jonah each managed to face down slightly more than half of that amount. And those were our best efforts.
Credit to James that he's managed two decent crease occupations in successive games, whilst others have perished around him.

Before the start of the day, I'd have taken 250 or anything less than that.

Not particularly, AG.
Essex have only Bopara and Gallian past 500 runs. Bopara is averaging 60-odd, but the only other beyond 40 is bowler Chris Wright who has two not outs from five innings.

Is this a good point to mention that when I thought (pre-Headingley) that I'd drafted Pattinson into my Fantasy team, I was wrong? It was Tomlinson.

Meantime, Jim Allenby who I have in my team has brought an abrupt end to the good start that the Gloucesters had made (yesterday.)
I don't know what Allenby's contractual situation is, but I would be genuinely interested in his coming here, should he come out of contract. He seems to be a guy who is developing well, with bat and ball, in all forms of the game.
Also, If Grockle's worries on the other thread are borne out, we may find ourselves in need of more all-rounders than just Pete and Arul.

I don't know what Allenby's contractual situation is, but I would be genuinely interested in his coming here, should he come out of contract. He seems to be a guy who is developing well, with bat and ball, in all forms of the game.
Also, If Grockle's worries on the other thread are borne out, we may find ourselves in need of more all-rounders than just Pete and Arul.

I see the ECB have convened a pitch panel at Riverside to decide whether or not Durham should be docked points, after 15 wickets fell on the first day of the match against Kent - and an amazing 23 today.

Yes it looks like Durham may get a win out of this match, Kent still need 61 runs with only 2 wickets left.
IF there are any points deduction it is usually the win points.
With Durham and Somerset with the same bonus points a draw or a win by Somerset would put us in front of Durham.

Grey cloud overhead in Bicknoller this morning but definitely brightening from the peninsular so we could have a good afternoon in prospect and that would make this game really interesting...if we can stay in and make a fist of this innings.
Still a big ask for Hilda, Trigger and Blackie but they could all do with the runs and the kudos of showing what this front end can do when they are put on their mettle. It would be wonderful to see them all score big while Zander holds up one end in support as well.

After a cloudy start we now have these very high puffy things floating around,some grey,with lots and lots of wind.
If the pitch has got a bit damp it won't take long with the covers off for it to dry out.
Let's hope Mr Frost has obliged and now the pitch should be ready for runs.
We have to see the first hour out unscathed,after that we can really build.
They are forecasting a damp day tomorrow so this could be interesting.

Definite option I'd say. We really do not want any kind of collapse after the break or this game is dead and gone. Our only option is to bat out Friday (which looks likely to be a full day and then re-assess at 11:00 tomorrow morning when the score and the weather will determine tactics.
What would you lot say is a defendable fourth innings target? We're 75 ahead now with 7 standing. The general opinion here seems to waver around the 250 mark or a total of 374 from us.

On the other hand, even if we fold up with a lead of 180 half and hour before tea then, if the heavy clouds have started to roll in, we might get plenty of assistance through the air and would probably still not lose. In that circumstance, I'd expect Notts to be maybe something like 90 for 4 or 5 at day's end with Saturday either being non-existant or a bowler's dream.

Suspect there would have been mutterings in the dressing room and, by the sounds of it, rightly so in this particular instance.
p.s. this post was written in response to Grockle's description of Ian's shot.
However one could argue that it's even worse to play that shot immediately after watching somebody else do something stupid.

Pete and Jonah are the only ones that could possibly save us now, I think.

The batsman can't bat under pressure. Thats what sorts out the men from the boys.
Anyone can do it when your 200/300 for 2 and the bowlers are wilting.
Hope that we can bat for at least another 2 hours (unlikley) and that forecast for tomorrow is right.

We've had the conversation about pacing an innings before - we jmust do not seem to operate at any kind of variable speed. We wither want to score at over a run a ball or less than a run and over.
The only players who seem to be able to play every ball on it's merit on anything like a regular basis are at 1 and 2 in the line-up. The rest either attack everything or can't get the ball of the square. Their choice of which ball to smack somewhere is also realy really poor and the two problems make for woeful batting like this.

Is this not related to the problem that we see in the short stuff of having an insufficient number of players that are adept at placing the ball into gaps for ones and twos?
If you can't do that, then you are left with a choice of block or hit?

Something tells me that, if Neil Edwards is able to resume, he will be asked to in the next game.
The batsmen look more in need of extra hands on deck than our SCCC bowlers who have generally been performing well.

I don't know that conditions today are difficult enough (based on Grockle's description) to provide any opening batsmen with the opportunity to play a 'gritty,' innings, FE.
If it doesn't rain tomorrow, but is heavily overcast, then that opportunity might present itself to Matt tomorrow, though.

In this match, the last 7 wickets have put on 83, 148, and 149. Notts need a further 149 from their last 7 wickets - but as the fourth wicket has already scored 8, they have no chance. They will be praying for rain tomorrow.
Had a lovely half hour watching this morning, but to keep 3 young girls amused was going to cost me a fortune in ice cream, so Lyme Regis beckoned...

Didn't see the last session I'm afraid guys but I did see Jonah treating Pattinson with disdain and looking like he was spoiling for a fight rather than looking for the ball to get out to.
Sterling work by Caddy as well who seems to have taken up the matle after the Welsh wizard.
It's also good to see that they gave Jonah the ball while his tail was up and he and Thommo got among them. Ohhh what will tomorrow bring? Patchy rain could make this a really interesting finish but consistent downpours could give us some points.

Hampshire`s 10-wicket win over Yorkshire today throws the First Division open even wider.
I see that James Tomlinson, who did for us in the first innings at Taunton back in May, took nine wickets in the match and is now the country`s leading wicket-taker, with 51 at just over 26 a go; yet last season he only played five first-class matches for a miserly haul of 13 wickets.

Real answer: get Somerset out first, then seewhat you're chasing. That will be at least 189, which I doubt they'd get tonight in any case. Play as normal tonight, then see what weather and other conditions are in the morning. Notts are well-placed anyway with other games being low-scoring, they don't need to do anything silly tonight.

I telephoned somebody at 7.45 and it had just started raining in Taunton, the same where I live.
I am delaying my decision to go until later, the forecast was the same this morning with the added comment of strong winds and gales near the coast.

Its been raining all night here in weston.

Today will be a complete wash-out.
It's imperative that we beat a bad Surrey team next week, should the weather permit it.
But the forecast is already less than special for next week, too.
The worry at the minute is that the ECB seem to no longer enforce penalties, no matter how shocking the pitch and Durham are liable to keep picking up wins if they play on the kind of dross that they played on against Kent.

Yeah listening to Rob Key last night he was less than impressed with the Riverside wicket.
John Holder said that the championship wicket looked no different than the pro 40 wicket used v Somerset!!!
550+ runs scored in 80 overs and then around 400 for the loss of 40 wickets,something does not quite add up there!!

Well we started at 11 and they've moved to 98 at the start of the 30th. Notts look up for this and we are bowling a lot of four balls. Past the ton with the first ball (four byes). Not sure yet but might like the rain in a bit as the second ball of the over goes to the boundary as well.

I've just been to Street, where it was tipping it down. Yeovil was fairly dry, but Dorchester is very wet. It won't be long before the rain gets to Taunton, which is probably why Notts are scoring so quickly.

met office rainfall radar shows the whole region under water by 1pm.
Unfortunately, it also shows Wednesday's play with Surrey as a non-starter, at this point.

and yesterday's prediction, FE, was really the met office's as opposed to mine. I also checked the BBC current weather, which informed me that it was bucketing down in Plymouth and that certainly seemed to correspond with awful weather moving up from that direction. And that was at 8AM.

Incidentally, all this rain may be another grave sign for Ian, in that there's a chance that a decision on his place could conceivably be taken purely from a batting point of view, if we think there's so much wet stuff around that we don't need a spinner versus Surrey?

Well you see if you checked the frontpage story you'd know all this.
The covers are on, with hoses, expecting big rain. We have drizzle but it is light and the direction of the weather suggests there'll be light most of the next few hours if the water stops. The Captain and Andy Hurry are on at the moment discussing things but no Notts people. It's really black to the West but it isn't coming our way so if you're in Minehead or Watchet you're probably getting tons.
We are getting weather from Wellington heading diagonally across the ground to the M5 and Ilminster and that is mujch more promising. Although I'm not sure our lot want to get out and do something with it.

Well we're getting more water now because even if we aren't seeing the downpour that seems to be hitting the Western outskirts, the sky is really heavy with rain and they are now covering all the wickets with BIG winds belting across the pitch from the Morrison's side.
I'm assuming we've had enough.

Inspected at 1:45. Covers came off on the right hand side - hearts in mouths - sky darkened. Covers went back on. Down came the rain. no possible play before 4:00 dark stuff coming from the centr of Taunton and big drops starting to hit.
Hopes raised and then dashed if you're a Notts fan. From our point of view 122 and third will do for now BUT we must win here next week and then go ad stuff them at the Rose Bowl or our 2008 Championship hopes are gone.

From 3 until half an hour ago we've been basking in hot sunshine,incredible.

The overall performance in this game far from anything like what we need to aspire to the Championship.
Batting/bowling sporadically good in parts, but the first innings collapse was lamentable & likewise the second innings middle order (lack of) effort.
We seem to have had something of a collective nervous breakdown over the last few weeks, semi akin to those seen in 2004/5.
There must be concern re the performances of Ian Blackwell, James Hildreth, & (dare I say it).........Andy Caddick. I'm not really convinced that the latter still justifies his place, even if he is fit. Bowling just seems too expensive ?
Am I also the only one who finds it irksome that JL only grace's us with an 'official' comment when we have won or had a good day ?
Not sure what's going on at the moment.
Are the undercurrents at risk of pulling us under, or am I painting an unduly gloomy picture ?

I do think that Justin Langer make some decisions that I don't agree with at time.
Today for instance why open with Caddick when Notts only needed a small amount of runs.
Caddick was hit for over 5 per over in the first inning and 6 in the second.

Well we got out of jail mostly unscathed and other results didn't do us any harm but we really have to do much much better to get anywhere near the title. Tuesday needs a big improvement or we will be potless this year.

Didn't see any of last night's and only about 3 overs this morning but he was bowling too short - something he has done in the past when he hasn't got into the swing of his bowling.
Is he past it? Haven't seen enough to say. He took Adams out in usual fashion - but that was after he went for 6 and nearly went for another when he had him caught off a no ball.
But he is 39 and he hasn't bowled a lot. I think he'll go when he feels he can't do it any more but at the moment I believe he is negotiating an extension to his contract for the summer of 2009. On what basis I'm not sure but I expect him to be rested from tomorrow and he will be in the side for Tuesday without doubt.

Sixth out of ten in the Southern Conference of the C.& G. and bottom but one in our Twenty20 Cup group.

We are third in Division One of the county championship, just 11 points behind the leaders with a match in hand and having already twice been top this season;
Reached the quarter-finals of the Friends Provident Trophy;
And only failed to do so in the Twenty20 Cup because both our matches against Glo`shire were washed out.

It's because I'm an ardent supporter, that it hurts to see us under perform.
The point is, we didn't have a hope of achieving anything in 2004-5 for many reasons, not the least of which was that nobody wanted to Captain the team.
Now, through the superb efforts of all concerned, we have a team of immense talent, undoubtedly capable of doing what we have never done before i.e. win the Championship.
However, if we don't/can't make the most of that talent, as has clearly been the case over the last few weeks, then it's not unreasonable to ponder why.

The point is, we didn't have a hope of achieving anything in 2004-5 for many reasons, not the least of which was that nobody wanted to Captain the team.
Now, through the superb efforts of all concerned, we have a team of immense talent, undoubtedly capable of doing what we have never done before i.e. win the Championship.

We have the CC within our grasp an we need a united team to achieve it.
Amongst any group of fans at any club in any sport in the world there'll always be the grumblers,it's a fact of life.
I don't see very many here though to be fair,I think that we're in the main simply concerned with what appears a sudden lack of discipline and standards.
The thing which struck so many of us over the last few years was the togetherness the lads showed.
It would be dreadful and damaging if that has been ripped apart.
Let's have faith it can be sorted.
It hasn't been the best of weeks in the office and it hasn't been the worst either.
We're still in there fighting.
Let's get it back together and show the world that we really are worthy winners of the County Championship.

Well I appreciate your desire to see us in the top half of the division CJM and that is where we should be - no argument.
But, sorry, 106 all out in the first innings of a Championship is not the performance of the winners of said Championship and nothing I could say to lessen the blow or give the people who take responsibility for these things 'a break' will make that less of a fact.
We were saved by the weather in this game. Had it not rained today Notts would have walked this match. We might have given them a better fight of it if we hadn't lost the last session on another day but we would still have been playing catch-up.
I watched all our home 20/20's and we were hardly ever in the driving seat after Justin and Marcus were out. A side that loses half it's matches should not be in the quarter final. It had nothing to do with the weather.
We have a side that can beat anyone in any competition but saying it like it is isn't 'carping'. If you see a different picture of things when you watch them play then post it or use it to question what others say.
People are asking questions about why things aren't firing. They have the right to because I personally agree with them - they aren't

Maybe you should write a letter to Mr Langer and Mr Rose and give them the same advice because I can't for the life of me see why our best slow bowler in the one day matches isn't playing. Are they in the right because they aren't mentioning the reasons then? Because they aren't 'carping'?
What I do know is that the situation we see has absolutely nothing to do with anything I or any other poster on this site has written.
I can't say that James plays wonderful shots but is unlucky to get out when what I see is a headless chicken shot when he's finally got himself in and has no need to do it.
I have trouble talking about the brilliant captaincy of a man I admire when I see Craig Kieswetter coming in at number 8 in a 20/20 game we are losing or Peter Trego being left fiddling in the dressing room while other batsmen burn at a time when he had the best one day batting record in the side.
I struggle with Mr Rose when I read 'I'm in charge and this is my plan' but I see someone else's agenda working in the physical world of Somerset cricket. Sorry, but I set up this site to say what I see and I personally worry about what I presently see.
We can win the Championship and we have two games to prove it. But everything in the Somerset garden is not rosey and once you sort out the problems and get the vehicle back on the tracks and moving in the right direction then you have to keep it moving and upright. People did that over the last few years but the momentum has to continue with the resources you have and NOT the resources you want.
We won the CC2 championship last year and we came up second in the one dayers. Whooppee! That was last year. Now we have to stay here and that means forward thinking and forward planning and keeping that development going. It doesn't mean sticking our heads in the sand and not rocking the boat and it doesn't mean looking through rosey spectacles and keeping it down to a whisper if something looks strange.
We've given Rosey and Justin and Andy H (don't remember him being particularly part of conversations on here actually) and Ian and James and Andy C their 'breaks' but it's two thirds of the way through the season and we did not win the 20/20 and we were SECOND 2 points behind Yorkshire before the break in the Championship.
We have little chance of doing much in the Pro40 given present form and we've just pulled 7 points out of a draw at home with the leaders to stay in third place. Another hour and a half and we would have been on 118 with Notts a long way away
Sorry mate but the glass can be half empty as well as half full and if you don't say it early then the fluid can drain away through a hole that gets bigger and bigger over time.
With luck and application we will beat Notts tomorrow and improve our Pro 40 standings and we'll stuff Surrey and Hampshire and stay front runners in the CC. And I for one will be crowing about it when I see those masterful performances.
But please don't come on here in two weeks time if we haven't and try and blame it on the intelligent and informed debate that takes place here.
If the place smells of fish and someone mentions the fishy smell then you can't blame them later for the pong I'm afraid. You smell fish, you mention it and someone sorts out said pong - or it smells out the whole place at a later date.

I can't say that James plays wonderful shots but is unlucky to get out when what I see is a headless chicken shot when he's finally got himself in and has no need to do it.
I have trouble talking about the brilliant captaincy of a man I admire when I see Craig Kieswetter coming in at number 8 in a 20/20 game we are losing or Peter Trego being left fiddling in the dressing room while other batsmen burn at a time when he had the best one day batting record in the side.
I struggle with Mr Rose when I read 'I'm in charge and this is my plan' but I see someone else's agenda working in the physical world of Somerset cricket. Sorry, but I set up this site to say what I see and I personally worry about what I presently see.
We can win the Championship and we have two games to prove it. But everything in the Somerset garden is not rosey and once you sort out the problems and get the vehicle back on the tracks and moving in the right direction then you have to keep it moving and upright. People did that over the last few years but the momentum has to continue with the resources you have and NOT the resources you want.
We won the CC2 championship last year and we came up second in the one dayers. Whooppee! That was last year. Now we have to stay here and that means forward thinking and forward planning and keeping that development going. It doesn't mean sticking our heads in the sand and not rocking the boat and it doesn't mean looking through rosey spectacles and keeping it down to a whisper if something looks strange.
We've given Rosey and Justin and Andy H (don't remember him being particularly part of conversations on here actually) and Ian and James and Andy C their 'breaks' but it's two thirds of the way through the season and we did not win the 20/20 and we were SECOND 2 points behind Yorkshire before the break in the Championship.
We have little chance of doing much in the Pro40 given present form and we've just pulled 7 points out of a draw at home with the leaders to stay in third place. Another hour and a half and we would have been on 118 with Notts a long way away
Sorry mate but the glass can be half empty as well as half full and if you don't say it early then the fluid can drain away through a hole that gets bigger and bigger over time.
With luck and application we will beat Notts tomorrow and improve our Pro 40 standings and we'll stuff Surrey and Hampshire and stay front runners in the CC. And I for one will be crowing about it when I see those masterful performances.
But please don't come on here in two weeks time if we haven't and try and blame it on the intelligent and informed debate that takes place here.
If the place smells of fish and someone mentions the fishy smell then you can't blame them later for the pong I'm afraid. You smell fish, you mention it and someone sorts out said pong - or it smells out the whole place at a later date.
Ohhh and it's a free and open forum. So carp all you want about the carping - you have every right to.

No double standards at all CJM. You (and you haven't been alone in this) infer that the debate isn't informed and I disagree.
You call it 'carping' and I call it 'informed speculation'. But if you want to call it 'carping' (maybe I should have put it in inverted commas) then you are entirely at liberty to come on and call it that. You'll probably get the same passionate defence next time as well.
We are not causing the problems by talking about them. So I suggested (no more than that) that it was a wrong tack to take to imply that this debate is in some way creating negative vibes or poor performances on the pitch. I is simply talking about observed actions.
I've already dealt with the posters who suggested that debating these things was in some way disloyal to the club (an old PA argument which we had no truck with then either).
I understand your point and maybe we should talk about the batting of Marcus and the constant bowling of Charl and the up and coming performances of Arul or the agressive will to win of Steffan a little more. But we are still in a limbo of performance as a team and should recognise the implications of that for this season and beyond. I doubt our postive spin on the situation would have any more effect on what seems to be going on (nothing has been confirmed or denied at this point).

First, there's the obvious caveat of what others do in their games.
But even if results elsewhere go against us, I'd have thought that one win and one high scoring draw would certainly keep us in contention?
Now, to do that, the batting needs to buck up and - in particular - somebody needs to take it upon themself to make a big ton rather than making 50 odd and then getting out.

I do think there's an undertone at times, with some of the cynics suggesting that those of us who try and see the positives are naiive fools: and that from some, that undertone is aggresively condascending.

My point to our perennials almost every time they post FE. However as I've posted more than once in the past few weeks.
I personally will actively respond to any poster who suggests that we should not discuss issues to do with the club either positive or negative because of the effect of those discussions may have. We don';t have that influence or we would change things and we don't.
This site was set up to discuss Somerset cricket and will not be muffled by the officials or other posters because it offends their personal views of decorum or cricketing etiquette.
Some of these views of what should and shouldn't be talked about need dispelling in a modern setting. The days of the 'us' and 'them', gentlemen and players, management and playing staff relationships of the 50's and 60's have gone I'm afraid. It's not just the format of the game that has changed.
Apologies if stating that sometimes seems condescending but it is the one of the main functions of Grockles and maybe it is because it seems to be stating the 'bleeding obvious' to point it out.
There are times when we have to be careful but there are also times when we are the only place talking about the 'elephant in the room'.

Anyway; I don't want to prolong any disagreement with "mein host". I think both sides of the "glass half empty; glass half full" debate are getting perhaps a little fractious because we can't believe that this is happening when our championship glass is fuller than it's been for years!
