Tie up the loose ends at Notts
Way to go PT!

September 3 2008
Biggest game of the season? Some would say so and many would be right. We're struggling if we don't do some damage to the leaders in this game. A poor start is contained and reset by a 90 run 9th wicket stand between Peter Trego and Andy Caddick. Well done boys!
v Nottinghamshire LVCC1 @ Trent Bridge Wednesday 3 September 2008
Winning the toss seemed like a good start to this one. Choosing to bat also seemed sensible given the conditions at the time. But they soon changed, as did Somerset's fortunes!
Langer went into this one without the services of Neil Edwards replaced by the later batting expertise of Wes Durston. Other than that it was a line-up with few surprises. Steffan Jones missed out as Trescothick, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Trego, Kieswetter, Thomas, Caddick and Willoughby made up the eleven.
Losing the captain to a first ball duck as he expected movement which didn't come gave us the worst start and on a rain affected day we never really go a pair of batsmen in long enough to put a real partnership together. Zander deBruyn, Hildreth and Durston went for 10 between them and even the Mighty Marcus only reached the mid-thirties before falling to Adams.

Blackwell got into the 20's before Shreck got him

Pattinson took three - all caught behind and at one point we were 51 for 5 before Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego put something together to get us into 3 figures.
The rain broke up the afternoon and finished the day's play around the Tea interval with 143 on the board with 7 wickets down. Not a great position to go into Day 2 but it could have been worse I suppose.
We don't have this match by the sphericals I'm afraid but we must ensure we do not give the advantage to Notts on Thursday.
Day 2
So we need a big partnership...and that becomes even more important once Alfonso goes.

So Peter takes charge and with the help of a certain Andrew Caddick Somerset move over 200 and towards the next batting point target of 250. When Trigger finally goes at 241 we are so close and the big man nurses Willoughby over the gain line before we finish at 252. Great work gentlemen Well done.
Now all we need to do is get them in and get them out as quickly and as cheaply as possible. But that has to be done between the showers as the rain continues to affect the day.
Enter Charl with the cricketing weapon he does know how to work with - the ball. Jefferson and Adams get them to 40 and then he strikes... Both openers are dispatched by Willoughby in short order at that score; Jefferson caught behind and Adams caught Durston.
Another rain shortened day but they only have 8 wickets left and only 46 up at the end of it. We are still 300 runs ahead and a good spell tomorrow morning could still make this game interesting (and get us more bonus points). The Day 3 weather is no better than the first two if the forecast is to be believed but with luck it might hold off and these two sides may get a chance to make a game of this one.
Day 3 and 4
No chance at all. The rain came in and came down and nothing was possible on either day. We finish with a draw and stand 4 points behind Notts BUT with a game in hand and a home fixture against our rivals in third place Durham (Harmison and all) starting on Tuesday. The has to be the game that decides our season.
It is a game we have to win
Nottinghamshire currently top Division One of the LV County Championship table but meet nearest challengers Somerset in a mouth-watering encounter at Trent Bridge.
The leaders may be boosted by the return of Graeme Swann or Samit Patel from the second day of the match if they are not selected for England in the final game of the NatWest Series on Wednesday
Justin Langer is back to lead Somerset in their crucial clash against Nottinghamshire after missing the draw against Hampshire 10 days ago.
The Australia opener heads a squad which inludes Steffan Jones in addition to the XI which played in their last championship match.
Ian Blackwell scored 129 in that fixture and will be eager to continue where he left off, with another notable innings at Trent Bridge
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]The CC is so close we can almost touch it.
Let's give it our all, every last one of us,a win here and we'll be able to smell it.

A perfect time and situation for a typical old style Langer innings too, head down and grind it out.
Come on boys, great position we have got ourselves in, lets give it everything
Two wins out of two, and against two of the top three teams at that? When this season we have won just three out of twelve games so far, that is one heck of an ask.
Good luck to them - many things will need to go Somerset's way, and you Langer will have to lead from the front in every aspect of the games!
Hope that it's the cricket that determines the results & not the weather !

Last week you told us how disillusioned you were with everything SCCC and how you were resigning from the regional committee.
Your last few posts indicate that you no longer care for the cricket.
Is this all because one player has been dropped from the 40 over games?

Are you going to Hampshire next season Wurzel?
Very probably, but then I have been for the last few seasons.
If you mean will I be supporting Somerset? I have always supported Somerset and will always do so, but I have been very disappointed with the way the club has been run over the last couple of years.
Due to my work commitments I see very little CC cricket, so I base my thoughts on limited overs stuff. The club initially announced that due to ECB restrictions they would be limiting their Kolpak players, to save money (reduced subsidies) and to allow more home grown players a chance. We seem to have taken a backward step and brought in more players, reducing the chances for our youngsters.
If we win the CC, then brilliant we'll have won it for the first time and we'll have a trophy, but don't feel we should aim to win it at all costs. Many people have been unhappy with various aspects of our club, this year, both on and off the field.
Everyone should be treated fairly and with respect. Unfortunately this hasn't been the case this year.
The captaincy and management of our 1 day team, this year and to an extent, last year, has been poor. We have been disorganised and our field placings haven't suited our bowlers.
The plans for our ground improvements have been changed, with what it appears very little consultation with the membership.
My experience of being on an area committee is that we are there to make up the numnbers and raise money. Some folks have good contacts and work extremely hard, raising significant sums, but they don't appear to have much say, simply rubber-stamping what the management committee have often already put in place.
As for many on this forum, it seems that you'd be happy to win the CC at all costs, for me people come first.
I do not necessarily agree with all the sentiments that you have expressed, but I would defend to the hilt your right to do so without being lampooned by others.
You have probably done more for Somerset C.C.C. than a number of other people by way of your membership of the Club, your membership and work for an Area Committee and above all else, your attendance at matches in order to support our team.
I applaud you for that, and am sorry that you have been the subject of some cheap and unnecessary jibes.
Who is being disrespectful?
I am sure I am not alone in remembering that in recent years, when Blackwell was a regular in all of our teams, Wes Durston was wurzel's "favourite player", and the poster's signature has often featured his exclusion as a "cause celebre". Now that Dusrton's in, some may say at Blackwell's expense, the argument is reversed!
You can't select every one in the squad.
Edit: Please don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that I disagree with wurzel about any given issue. Just trying to point out that every decision has a consequence - every inclusion requires an exclusion, every high priority carries with it an implication that something else is of lower priority - every fielder placed is another fielder moved. That's life!

However,if you make a comment regarding cricket or anything to do with cricket it will get responded to.
If you don't want a response then don't post an opinion, that's the very nature of a forum.
If you post an opinion expect a response.
If somebody, regardless of who it is is constantly complaining about our team, management, selcetion policy, effort levels, fielding positions, commitment, tea, coffee and biscuits then yes, they can expect a response.
I simply asked Wurzel a question about his declared lack of enthusiasm.
Please respect that.
I used to play with a bloke,a hooker who used to go around the dressing room punching all the team members prior to a match, proper punches too just to get people revved up.
Mind you,he was ginger.
Anyway, no score or team news on Cricinfo or BBC - presumably a delayed start?
I hope the missing name is Willoughby.

I too respect wurzel's right to his opinion, but with respect, they often tend to come across more as hobby-horses than considered opinions.

As Bamber Gascoigne used to say, FE, "well remembered". I did indeed used to champion Wes's cause, but I have been disappointed with his limited bowling contributions this season. He's an excellent fielder and can do a good job with the bat. He, like other youngsters, needs to seize every opportunity with both hands, as there are many others waiting in the wings.
Keith Parsons is another I campaigned for, when there was a possibility he might go to Kent.
I hardly think Wes has displaced Ian, maybe Omari or Arul. Wes has been used as a specialist fielder and batsman. Omari and Arul have both bowled. Omari has usually been fairly measly with his runs when bowling, but I don't remember and outstanding batting or fielding. Arul is usually outstanding in the field and can be a reasonable batter and bowler.
In order of preference I'd pick Blackie, Arul (if Wes doesn't bowl), Wes then Omari.
I trust this is a reasonable analysis.
BTW it's BJ that's into horses, not me.

Notts have 12 listed - I suspect Swann will replace Hales (?) when he gets back from the England ODI set-up later today / tomorrow morning.
That doesn't make me happy - I hope Langer's LBW was plum.
Again, I stress, I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with your conclusions (although I might question whether we can continue to consider Wes a youngster!).
I was simply stating that I could understand why others might react the way they do when you seem to simply champion a succession of excluded players at the apparent expense of backing those in the side.
He didn't feature in their last match, and is the fourth opening bat on their team sheet. And they must be fairly confident Swann will be back, as they've left out their other other spinner from the last match, Ferley.

Please could our resident statistician post JL's last dozen, or so, scores?
First-class or List A?
I had already checked in response to geordie moonraker's earlier remark. The majority of Langer's first-class scores of fifty plus have come in the latter half of the season, akltyhough he hasn't converted a fifty in the second half of the season.
His last two scores before today were in the 70s.
The high scoring draw is out of the window, so we will just have to win, won't we!

Apparently Langer is allowed to ask the Umpires for an"indicative ruling" as to how any declaration would be viewed before he makes it. I wonder whether he has.

While I hope I'm wrong, there's little chance of us getting to 200 or 250 for bonus points, while more chance of Notts enhancing their points total. With the prospect of little play over the next few days (the weather forecast really is shocking), I'd have thought JL might have thought we'd be better off going for 3 or 6 wickets ourselves rather than allowing Notts the points for 9 wickets.
Of course, I'm not at Trent Bridge and have no first-hand idea of conditions or local forecast, that's just my observation from afar.
But I more-than-half expected an overnight declaration too, SP.
If we get 200 with only 8 down should we pull out then?
Surely Langer has considered this option? If not, questions should be asked and he needs to go off and have a quiet word with himself.
200 up - just get to 400 then declare.
Anyway, I didn't foresee a 49-run partnership for the 9th wicket - well played Trigger and Co!

12.35pm Graeme Swann joined Nottinghamshire's side a day late for their top-of-the-table championship match against Somerset after the end of England's one-day series, writes David Hopps at Trent Bridge. His chances of getting a bowl this morning did not seem too good when Somerset resumed at 143-7 - but so spirited was their resistance that he had to intervene to prevent a calamitous Notts morning session.
Somerset finished on 252, adding another 109 in 26 overs, with Peter Trego supplying a forceful 86 from 108 balls, an innings full of boisterous sallies off the back foot. The Notts seamers, who had been so dominant on the opening day, were brusquely repelled, leaving Swann to join the attack with Somerset 232-8 and Trego 82 not out.
Swann did not play a game in England's one-day series - his county teammate Samit Patel was preferred - so he could have been forgiven for feeling a little rusty. But his intervention soon ended Trego's assault as a legside clout was intercepted at deep midwicket by Mark Wagh, a fine running catch. Trego's ninth-wicket stand with Andrew Caddick was worth 90. The match could not be more finely balanced, but it needs to develop quickly today with heavy rain forecast for tomorrow's third day
LoL
Sixty-six Seasons a Somerset Supporter
Now I'm just not sure.
I think that's right.
6.20pm Notts' experimental opening pair, Will Jefferson and Bilal Shafayat, might have been designed as an optical illusion rather than an answer to their batting problems at the top of the order, writes David Hopps. Jefferson, at nearly 6ft 10ins, is the tallest county cricketer in the land, whereas Shafayat, if he stands on tiptoe, just about musters 5ft 7ins. Stare at them long enough as they stand 22 yards away from each other and eventually you imagine that the Trent Bridge pitch is steeply sloping.
They put on 157 against Sussex at Hove last week, but the new alliance might yet fall foul of Health & Safety because if they ever try to punch gloves there is the danger that Shafayat will be left with a bloody nose and Jefferson will collapse to the crease clutching his groin.
There were few excuses for glove punching on this occasion. A cautious opening stand ended on 40 - immediately after Somerset got the ball changed - when Jefferson edged Charl Willoughby to the wicketkeeper. Andre Adams was sent in as nightwatchman, but he is not really cut out for such responsibilities and he carved to gully in the same over. Notts completed an awkward 18 overs in milky evening sunshine on 46-2. They trail Somerset by 206.
Shafayat was almost dismissed on three when he drove Andrew Caddick to short extra where Max Waller's claim for a catch, supported by his teammates, was not upheld by the umpire Patsy Harris. Both Harris and his fellow official, Tim Robinson, are former Notts players. It says a lot about cricket's deep well of goodwill that nobody is the slightest bit concerned at such things.
Who is Max Waller?
I now know who Max Waller is.
I still don't know why he was fielding for us. I hope nobody was injured.
Young lad, played for Dorset for a few years, one of the precious Millfield alumni that missed the Somerset draft.
Good amount of rip, good pace through the air and had a couple of good sessions with the Academy against Banger where he was most noticed.
No idea about his batting but has been 12thers for a couple of games.
Very different to Mike Munday but rated by MET. One for the future?

That is spot on and one of the features that makes cricket what it is. Can you imagine .say Alan Shearer a) becoming a ref
being allowed to ref a Newcastle game c) disallowing an opposition goal. The back pages will be full.
Here, even if the umpires had been wrong we would have automatically assumed no bias...and long may it continue.
The weather at Chester le Street may well hold all day so Durham could do themselves a bit of good.

I am assuming the table on Cricinfo reflects the overnight position
I am coming back to this late, so you may already know this. But I believe that the CricInfo "in-running" table is updated shortly after each completed innings. So for instance its position overnight last night would be to reflect our batting points but not any bowling points (not that we have any yet!).
As a perhaps better demonstration, take a look at CricInfo's "Full Scorecard" option for the current Yorks-Sussex game. You will see that towards the bottom of the page, Sussex have been credited with their two batting points, but not yet their two bowling points from the as-yet-incomplete Yorks innings. The points on the "Full Scorecard" are the points which are reflected in the "live" table.

The advance weather forecast for Taunton next week promises (if that is the right word) rain every day of the Durham match apart from the Wednesday, with the threat of it being `heavy` on Thursday.
The only consolation might be that as we are playing Durham, the only other county with a game in hand near the top of the table, they will be affected by the self same rain.

That was certainly the case when Durham v Notts was washed out on all four days at Riverside last month.
Although sadly I fear that it does mean that LoL's extension, that we would be campions in the event of there being no further cricket this year, would prove to be in error. I fear we would end up level on points with Notts but with one victory fewer.

They need 3 wins to stand any chance.
Therefore i wouldnt be surprised if they try and bat today and set Kent a tempting target tomorrow after a few declarations. It will mean Kent forgoing 5 batting points so they will be looking for 17pts max, which would take them 5 clear of us having played a game more.

I didn't know the new rules have been change, the commentators said you can't have a one innings match anymore, there is no forfeitting of first innings, or a one innings match.
I am not sure, Mike, that the commentators were correct in saying that.
Regulation 18 of the Playing Conditions, 2008 for The LV County Championship, and which extends to some 38 pages, states:-
Forfeiture of Innings
Law 14.2 shall apply.
Law 14.2:-
Forfeiture of an innings
"A captain may forfeit either of his side's innings. A forfeited innings shall be considered as a completed innings."
It would appear to me then that nothing has changed.
However, one thing that would appear to have changed is the policy of the captain of a batting side declaring their innings closed, when it appears to have no reason other than to prevent the bowling side from achieving further bowling bonus points, and without enhancing the batting side's prospects of winning or saving the match. Such actions could be deemed as "bringing the game into disrepute."

What has changed, Palairet, is that until recently, if a CC match started with less than 8 hours playing time left, it automatically became a single innings game. This is no longer the case.
The Regulations changed with effect from the 2008 season in that the automatic forfeit of each side's first innings, in the circumstances to which you referred, no longer applies.
Perhaps that is what the commentators said when Mike was listening; I don't know, I didn't hear it myself.
Anyone guess what we need to do to put this silverware in the cabinet?

Unless a locally applied addition, in which case they are Rules?
Or perhaps Law 43 applies?
VtF.
Or even regulations!
Umpires try to apply it all the time ...
VtF.
I must confess that when I umpired (and I am fully qualified) I tried to apply just that myself.
Sadly, it has always appeared to me that "Law 43" never appeared in the rule books of either Darrell Hair or 'Billy' Doctrove. Come to that, it wasn't in Mike Procter's book either.

But then, that's another story isn't it?
Over and Out!
