Lancs or Champs? Down to the Wire
Now or Never ARC
By Grockle
September 24 2008
Andy Caddick has the opportunity to do something really special to cap his brilliant career. He can help his county beat Lancashire and hope it is enough to pass Notts and take the CC1 trophy. It isn't the best situation to have to rely on the activities of others but you do have to be in it to win it ans we are most definitely still in it.
v Lancashire CC1 @ Taunton Wednesday 24 September 2008
Down to the wire we go then people. The 2008 Championship will be decided in the next four days based on events in a number of places but, in our case on the events that take place on the pitch at Taunton.
Only one end result will work for us. We must beat Lancashire to have any chance of overtaking Nottinghamshire and we must beat them well for that to be enough. At the same time, Notts must lose, or make do with a mediocre draw.
So who is going to do the business for us then? Langer has Marcus Trescothick back to fitness and that could be crucial. The rest is pretty easy to predict;
Langer, Trescothick, Suppiah, de Bruyn, Hildreth, Blackwell, Trego, Kieswetter, Thomas/Jones, Caddick, Willoughby
The official site suggests that Steff Jones is ready to return and that would be at the expense of Alfonso Thomas if anyone. I can't see us not putting Arul Suppiah in the top five but it might happen.
The weather suggests 4 decent days. We'd better make them count because they are all that is left of the season and the end product could make for a satisfying or frustrating winter of 2008.
Good Luck boys. Make your own and leave the rest to fate.
Day 1
My first prediction is wrong!! Arul misses out and we go in with an extra seamer as Steffan Jones returns to the side. The morning however starts with our batsmen and it doesn't start particularly well as both Marcus Trescothick (caught Law bowled Newby) and Justin Langer (caught behind off Chapple) go cheaply before we get far past 20. Presently it is 30 for 2 off 11 overs on a bright but cloudy day which promises more sunshine later. Not the start we wanted but it is down to de Bruyn and Hildreth to put us back on the front foot. But it goes from bad to very bad as the middle order crumbles and our Championship hopes start to disappear with the bonus points we don't get from our mediocre score of 202 of which Pete Trego provided 81 including a 50 partnership with Andrew Caddick. The rewst fell by the wayside to a series of injudicious shots to the wrong balls.
By the end of the day Lancs have a quarter of our score BUT hope springs eternal as we have four Lancashire men back in the hutch courtesy of Caddick and Willoughby.
Day 2
The decision not to bowl Mr Caddick or Mr Willoughby at the start of play on the second day until the 12th over makes supporters and commentators alike question the mind of our illustrious captain. The visitor tail wags and they pass us before we dismiss them for 248 with the ignored main seamer taking 4 for 79. He wasn't best pleased to say the least.
However this is still a game for the taking and we need a good second stand in order to have a go at them on the fourth day. Wafting is prohibited - shame no-one told our opening pair who amass a mighty 25 between them before both going to daft stuff. We finish the day on 66 for 2 and a good third day could put us in the driving seat for this game and if things go our way elsewhere.....
Day 3
But it goes on. Players get in but then don't push on. 33 to de Bruyn 22 to Hildreth. Only Ian Blackwell gets over the 50 boundary but then goes at 55. No-one stands tall and scores of 20 here and there get us to 227 as I arrive at just after 3:15 to an early tea with us all out only 181 runs ahead of Lancs with a day to go. We don't seem to be in a commanding position to get the 20 plus points we need but this game is not yet over.
Unfortunately it doesn't take more than an hour for it to be done. We don't make early inroads. We don't make any inroads at all and the opposition move towards the winning score without loss. At one time they probably considered invoking the extra 30 minutes and going for it but they went into the doldrums for a time and it was just out of their reach. We'll come back tomorrow to put it to bed but there is no doubt where these points are going and the only question is whether we'll finish second (£40,000 in the bank) or...in the words of Anne Robinson "leave with nothing" in third/fourth/fifth.
Day 4
The day finally starts with a guard of honour for Alan Jones after 24 years on the first class umpire list (he's going to finish in the Indian league and probably make more in an hour than he's made in two decades!!) and county caps for Zander de Bruyn and Alfonso Thomas before the penultimate session of the season starts (don't expect to be here after lunch - but we are) with Charl opening from the River on a wicket almost in touching distance of the new Trescothick stand. It's still misty but don't get your hopes up. The club are not providing lunchtime refreshments for the sides or the officials either (it seems - wrongly) so they don't expect this to last too long. Lancashire need 60 off 79 overs with Caddick starting from the OP with a boundary ball first up.
Five overs in, the announcement that Durham have trounced Kent and sent them into the second division. they'll take the trophy unless Notts clear the 400+ that Hampshire have left them to get in 70-ish overs. Now that WOULD be a last day of a game.
Meanwhile here Horton goes to 50 off 99 balls with 10 fours (mostly off ARC it seemed). It's not until 151 that we 'break through' with a second slip catch to Trescothick off the bowling of Caddick and the back of Horton for 58.
162 for 2 as a very upset Chilton decides to hook Caddick, decides against it mid shot and flips the ball to a fielder for 97...not a happy chappy and we are on a roll with an attacking field of 3 slips and a gully!!
Lunch with 7 needed to win - do me a favour!! There seems to be something in terms of fodder for the players...at least they've gone off to see anyway why not go for lunch half an hour later when we didn't start until an hour after the scheduled time?
Back at 1:05 with Law and Brown facing Willoughby and Caddick (possibly) and a whole bunch of close fielders just in case on of these two takes the first ever double hat-trick to make a game of this!! A possible flying catch from Zander in the gully does not materialise however and the winning boundary is dispatched from ball four by Stuart Law and off we all go at 1:08.
Thanks made to Phil Frost and his team for their work in a weather affected season are received by the supporters with applause and it all wanders to a conclusion of the 'damp squib' variety. Players wander into each others dressing rooms, the sun finally breaks through and a small handful of supporters gather at the bottom of the dressing room steps for heaven knows what.
Goodbye 2008. Not sure what to make of you yet. At the end of 2006 we would have killed near and dear relatives to be wher we are now but now we are here I can't help feeling that this has not been a great season given the hype and the hopes in early April. Maybe that is because we aren't what we thought we were and maybe we expected too much from a club that possibly tried to run before they'd got into their stride.
The post mortem will be interesting. Big signings will be significant by their absence and there may still be a bit of sorting out to do before we are sure who will be in Somerset colours next season. Good luck to John Francis and Andy Sutton if rumours are confirmed (as expected) and if we don't tallk to some of you before the start of next Spring...winter well.
We'll be here abouts during the off season so keep in touch. And we welcome you all to assemble here in April 2009 for the next instalment in the "Somerset seek a Championship" saga.
Wet,windy and cold.
And I haven't gone outside yet.
(Actually it's pretty awful in London at the moment, as well)
LoL
Sixty-six Seasons a Somerset Supporter
Time for bed I think.
I find it hard to say this but I would have liked to have seen Turner in for Caddick. (I know a lot of you will shoot me for saying that)
Now the Lancs team is easier to say who is not playing.
Quote :-
Confidence is high in the Lancashire squad, despite the loss of Francois Du Plessis.
The South Africa batsman has returned to his native Pretoria in preparation of Nashua Titans' first match of the summer, with Mal Loye replacing him in the Lancashire batting line-up.
They are also without Sajid Mahmood, struggling with a side strain, and Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson, who are rested ahead of a full international winter.
Dominic Cork has also been left out, meaning he has played his last game for the county.

The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]Tres, Skipper, Brains, The Emperor, Blackie, Hobnob and BoBo should be more than capable of getting enough runs, but no amount of runs will be enough if we can't take 20 wickets!
Looks as though they may be going for a `results` XI, too, despite the fact that a draw would probably be enough to save them.
Will be interesting to see what the pitch is like tomorrow. I imagine Phil Frost may be feeling a little stressed today !
If we bat first, I really hope we get a load of runs on the board. Scoreboard pressure has never been so important.
Here's hoping.
Grizzzly
With Alfonso, Jones, Caddy, Willow, Trego, Blacky & Zander we cant have done much more to get the wickets.
I trust the big guns to perform, JL is coming into form and i feel is well up for this one. Banger knows how to produce when it matters. With Blacky and Trego batting well too im hoping for a big big first innings and then hope that 2.5 days will be enough to get the 20 wickets we need.
Think the next 4 days will be full of twsits, depending on how other games are going lots of potential for strange decsions, declaring behind, setting of tempting totals, going to be a nerve racking few days, COME ON HAMPSHIRE!!!

I have a feeling in my water that this is Caddick's game- his destiny and the point to which his whole career is aiming.

There may be problems on public transport due to the incident in Bath last night. That's why I'm leaving early.
See you all there.Got to get there early to get the best biscuits. The dunkers are the best.
I wish we weren't dependant on Hants.
Lancs in, 170 all out Somerset 144 for 0 at close of play. Finish day 2 at 450. Lancs 300 all out 2nd innins, Marcus wins it with a 6.
That's the dream ..... as Mrs GM says " one day you'll grow up"

This is the first day of the rest of my life.
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]Excellent stuff from the Skipper, but I have just one tiny criticism. He made mention of the fantastic support throughout the county: it would have been the icing on the cake if he'd mentioned the support around the country and around the world!
Good luck today lads. Make us all even prouder than we already are!

That would suit me fine, as I can only make tomorrow!
TODAY TO
BIG JIM
Cummon the Lads - destiny awaits

Banger is fit - hooray!
Steff, Alfie, Caddy and Charl all play.
Notts have inserted them.
Can someone hurry the sun out of it's slumber
Now we'll see what a good team we are.
Keep the faith, people!
Would it be a hex to suggest he might get a huge score today?
They were suggesting that the depth and strength of our bowling, given the brittleness of Lancs' batting this year, render the preparation of a green-top an unnecessary risk too far. They think we would have had a good chance of 20 wickets without it, and that all we may have acheived is to have lessened our chances of the batting points which would ensure Notts have to win.
Why? Because I transferred Denly into my fantasy team yesterday, of course.
Notts have their first breakthrough, too. Hants 46-1.
I seem to hv lost updates, is there another wicket coming?
Not looking good, time to hide under to duvet
Stupid.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but do we not need a maximum points win, in all probability?
So what logic is there in a green top that will almost certainly prevent us scoring 400?
Apparently Frosty says that despite how green it looks it will still play well after the early phase.
At 61 for 4 now (De Bruyn falls as I write), I hope he's proven correct soon!
It is rumoured the fact that his South African captain is playing for Kent might have provided them with some leverage.
The same SA franchise, Titans, have recalled Francois Du Plessis from Lancs, who has been replaced in today's side by Mal Loye.

He said, in a truly desperate attempt to clutch at positive-looking straws.
Yes, that's usually the way here. The Hants game was a perfect example.
And perverseley Willis may, in one sense at least, have a point. A green seamer would be so far out of character with the Taunton norm, that it might be difficult to argue that it hadn't been prepared deliberately.
Preparing a green top- means relying on winning the toss. If so why do we need 5 bowlers? Surely on a green top you will only need the 4 we have been playing regularly. Anyway anytime the wicket has been doing anything at Taunton is when we've been inserted and failed miserably.
If you do bat first and the wicket is a green top then you are giving up 5 points straight away which means Notts only need 9 or 10 points in a draw to win. Even if we won the game it wouldn't be enough.
Should have preapared a typical Taunton wicket and the extra bowler.
I'm beginning to wonder about whose making the decisions and the mentality,.............honestly!!!!
Points deductions usually come when pitches either turn square from the off or else are uneven/dangerous.
The pitch may well lead to a defeat, however.
Anyway; I'm into the car now, which will hopefully work some magic. I may be out of circulation until this time tomorrow, which is going to be agonising!
TTFN!
Keep the faith!
Good luck!
FE.
Anyway.........go on the Trego, he's been threatening a ton all year.
In these days of promotion and relegation you need to give the bowler some form of assistance at Taunton otherwise every game will be a draw. That’s all that Frosty’s been doing and rightly so - you need to win games and also the flat pitches at Taunton used to have a negative impact on our away form as our players weren’t used to movement of any sort.
These sorts of pitches have got us promoted and allowed us to challenge at the top of Division 1 so I’m not sure that we can really complain now. It’s not as though this is the first time that the team put in on the first morning has struggled.
The only other 2008 pitch that I can remember that was really like this was the one for the Hants game.

I cannot understand the tactics. We need a good tally of bonus points plus a victory, if we are to stand any reasonable chance, assuming either Notts or Durham win.
By preparing a bowler friendly pitch, if that's what we've done, we are negating the chances of scoring enough runs to get good bonus points, the game will probably not go the distance, so lower revenue and no championship.
Also, folk who have looked forward to seeing some cricket, in a rain affected summer, may feel short-changed and may not renew their subs.
Of course, Trigger may do a 1981 'Botham' and things might change dramatically.
After early season promise we have slipped into relegation form.
It would seem that we've over-egged the pudding in preparing something less than our usual bat-friendly strip, but there's another side to bat on it yet, and 3+ innings left in the match. I don't know anything about pitch preparation, but it may be that even an expert like Phil Frost finds it a very fine line between a result wicket and an absolutely green, unplayable seamer.
145-7 at the mo - that could be 50 over par (as could Hants' 119-6)! Come on lads, glass half-full...
Quote:SheptonPaul
Come on lads, glass half-full...
I don't know about glass half-full. I need a drink!
That is not good news in anyone's book, except for the supporters of other teams.
Trego is obviously showing the others what can be done with perhaps a mixture of self-discipline and aggression?
I did think that I would have liked to have been at Taunton today, but this game is not possible for me. Perhaps it is best if I retired to bed and get up again later when things are all over for the day.
Still, as Eric Idle portrayed when he wrote the aptly-named song - "Always look on the bright side of life!"
"Will be interesting to see what the pitch is like tomorrow. I imagine Phil Frost may be feeling a little stressed today !
If we bat first, I really hope we get a load of runs on the board. Scoreboard pressure has never been so important."
Waking up here to find we are 188-8 at tea, makes me wish I'd kept my gob shut !!

P.S. At least Trigger is showing some guts, but today was not the day for the team to have yet another attack of 'first innings itis'.

D'ya know what? That's exactly the kind of comment that get's people upset with you. Tactless, tasteless. totally unneccessary on what has so far been a dissappointing day. And funnily enough I was thinking about some of your comments an hour ago and wondering when would be the time to agree with some of them. (the answer is after the season ends!)
Tough, there's an awful lot of people upset with our club.
Which particular comment didn't you like?
We have failed with the bat, many times in the first innings, with many players playing loose shots, according to the media.
Let's hope Tractor, heard in the background, gets louder.

It was my attempt at humour. I am looking forward to great things.
"If Somerset win with maximum bowling points, that will earn them 18 points. They trail Notts by eight points and the east Midlanders already have maximum bowling points with three, so if they get 300+ they will earn another three points, plus four for the draw, which brings us to a grand total of 10, which would mean both teams would be level. So it then goes down to most wins, which would mean Nottinghamshire would win the title."

Easy
I've been following all day long via Cricinfo and text commentary from Bristol Rob.
It seems everyone is in good humour at the ground courtesy of a cider fuelled binge.
The decision to gamble on the toss didn't appear to go down to well,a few choice words were being thrown around this morning.
Apparently Trigger batted beautifuly,no surprises there.
Fingers crossed we can get rid of the rest of them quickly.
Anything can happen in this game as we all know.
It's not been a great day but it's not been all bad either.
Let's get what we can and put the pressure on the others.
Quote:Nailsea_Fizz
deep breaths everyone, it's only a game.
Words cannot describe how irritated I am with you Nailsea_F, I have had Jim Davidson singing the theme tune to that snooker based TV Game show going round my head all afternoon. Grrr.
A better end to the day than I had feared, but about what I had hoped for.
See them off tomorrow and the win is still very much on.
So long as we make Notts win their game to win the pennant, I'll be happy to doff my cap to them if they do. CricInfo did point out that were we to win the thing we would have done so with the lowest win %age in history.
But I haven't given this up yet. Come on Hampshire!
A hint of green may be metioned by some reporters,or maybe more than a just a hint.
It does seem a shame it has become a lottery but there we are I suppose,we have to trust in those that know better.
Trigger is a real gem,a hero.
If we win this one,and we're in a good position then he needs to be given the freedom of Taunton.
What a knock that was.
If only the news presenter could have given him the credit for it and not Banger.

The one saving grace for us, is that the 'Sky' commentary team have been saying how dodgy the Trent Bridge wicket is, offering uneven bounce and runs have to be eeked out, so all may not be lost, but I can understand our fans frustrations, when we needed a wicket where we would hope to make at least 350. Perhaps it is and we weren't good enough. I just don't know.
Such lyrics: "I'm going to be snookering you tonight". Hmmmm.
On another note, is anyone clever enough to generate a league table that shows the teams as they stand now with bonus points accrued so far in this round?
Quote:bloke
Thanks Jim, that was, er, enjoyable.

Your 'fiends' on Sky, kept doing a running update (as it stands) during their transmission. I believe we are down to third, at least we were just after lunch.
In the end we are in a better position than Lancs at end of day 1.
If Caddy and Willow bowl tomorrow am like they did tonight then we could have them out by lunch for under 150.
Then we can bat as long as we want (can) and stand chance of getting our 18 points.
We need to hope Hampshire can bowl well now and restrict Notts to 299 maximun tomorrow then its game on!
Lets all get behind the lads tomorrow, huge morning for us
The table tonight is:-
Nottinghamshire 181 from 16*
Somerset 172 from 16*
Durham 171 from 16*
Hampshire 160 from 16*
Lancashire 155 from 16*
Sussex 153 from 16*
Kent 151 from 16*
Yorkshire 147 from 16*
Surrey 124 from 16
Somerset 172 from 16* 2
Durham 171 from 16* 5
Hampshire 160 from 16* 3
Lancashire 155 from 16* 5
Just to confirm what others have already said, I think I've added correctly in red the number of bonus points each team has still theoretically available to them. Bowl them out and the most we can get to is 188. So if we do that and then Notts make 400 then lose, we win it. If they make 300 and draw it's theirs whatever we do.
COME ON HAMPSHIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come On HANTS
And before anyone makes the point, of course I'm not going to say anything about not going on to a ton, even if BR does. My problem has been with the specialist batsmen failign to go in favourable batting conditions.
As I said at the time, it was curious for BR to single out Pete for this.
Best knock of the year by a long chalk.
Excellent bowling conditions this morning, loads of cloud cover though a tad cold if anything.
I'm sure we can get a decent lead over this lot and finsish them off within tyhree days.
Up and at 'em.
No-one can understand why we haven't opened with our main strike bowlers, in such helpful overcast conditions. So far we've hardly beaten the bat!
I've encountered Tractor and BR, but so far BR has declined a pint! Have taken lots of photos, so I'll try and upload them.

Noting your reference to BR - do you mean Brian Rose ?
If so, could you please ask him to do us all a favour & make some kind of statement re Ian Blackwell; preferably along ths lines that he is a highly valued player who will be an intrinsic part of our one and four day teams for many years to come !

P.S. Meantime, if you could arrange for us to mop up Lancs for 150-175, that would also be appreciated !

Over to you Nailsea for some positive thinking!!
One of the concerns that I have about him returning again next season is that, as a batsman, the wall may very well be close so that he may be much more down than up next season. Or at least quite a bit less effective than younger overseas batsmen at other counties.
Nobody said it was going to be easy.
Exciting,yes.
Easy,no.
Come on me boys, come on lads.
I haven't seen Banger's dismissal. I hope it wasn't another loose shot. What we needed tonight was for openers to play responsibly, resisting the urge to smash runs. We needed a dour session and then a structured innings tomorrow.

At times this season I have been dismayed by JL's captaincy. Today took the biscuit.
glad you think it exciting too. Following all 4 games today from a computer screen is fascinating. The changing fortunes is what makes cricket a great game ( whether 4,5 or 1 day)
Nottinghamshire 182 from 16*
Somerset 174 from 16*
Durham 173 from 16*
Hampshire 164 from 16*

Sussex 154 from 16*
Yorkshire 152 from 16*
Surrey 124 from 16
What a time for Tresco to have a double failure. I understand he has a shoulder problem so maybe that has hindered him.
But another loose wayward shot and Langer goes?
How many more of those will we suffer? Where was the discipline? Just had to see the session out and then attack tomorrow.
An interesting next 2 days.

With Yorkshire having forged a strong position, Kent will have to dig deep and Durham haven't won anything yet.
If we can set up a 200+ lead, which is still well within the realms of the possible, Lancs will be under pressure on the final day. Hants are doing themselves (and us) proud.
It's still so tantalisingly possible.
After tomorrow I think it will be clearer.

If i were Lancs i wouldnt fancy chasing 180/200, if we can oush it beyond that then great.
Need Kent to do us a favour at Durham but they've everything to play for if Sussex pick up a few batting points.
Friday is going to be huge, a Notts style collapse tomorrow morning for Durham and then big 2nd Innings from Kent you never know, roll on 10.30am...

Times report quotes Caddick saying:
"I wanted to bowl first thing, but the captain went for another guy,” Caddick, who finished with the best figures of four for 79, said. “It is just the way he reads it. I was pleased when I did get on and get a wicket straight away.”
Asked how Langer explained the decision to him, Caddick said: “He didn’t. Next question.”
Hmmmmmmm...........

We must just concentrate on winning this game now and forget about others games.
The former captain could not explain the Blackwell omission either but I was told by two people that know Ian quite well that he's going nowhere. That was very refreshing to hear especially as they are two of the nicest people around.
Thanks for the update.

Don't like the tactics, don't like the captain, don't like the facilities. don't like the value of your membership, don't like the format.........
Shame you like the wi-fi really Both
It made a nice change to get to the cricket and meet many old friends. I met people from Weymouth FC and we'd no idea that each went to the cricket.
I enjoyed some banter with BR, Tex (drinking half pints of Shiraz!), Tractor, LoL, Mike BOS and many others.
Unlike, seemingly, most of you, I get very frustrated by JL's captaincy. His tactics beggar belief at times and since cricket is why we go, it does rather spoil the experience.
Yesterday morning, for the first hour the conditions were ideal for Caddick & Willoughby, yet they were rested and we allowed Lancs to score freely, play themselves in, give them confidence, etc, etc. It set them up for the day and we all paid for it.
The wi-fi and the EBC are brilliant, as I can surf in comfort nd update the site with pictures, which some might appreciate. I have even paid my subs for next season, but I hope JL might decide to have a rest!
I had a positive but brief conversation with my hero and took a picture, but alas my memory card was still in the laptop, so I couldn't transfer the image from the camera.
As Andy Caddick is staying next year, I'd give him the captaincy. He is well respected by all and has proved that he can do the job. I don't believe that JL has the player's respect.
For those of you attending the next two days, I hope the sun shines and it's a bit warmer and that we play some thrilling cricket and above all we win.
One other query, why didn't Trigger bowl yesterday, or perhaps he did and I missed it?
He wasn't even given a try.

I predict Caddick we be dropped in the next match.
He was dropped for the Worcs match, in anticipation!
After tomorrow I think it will be clearer."
Durham are in the best position, by a mile, barring unexpected inclement weather. And no sign of that in the South East today.
Durham only need to get to 300 and then, if they match our result, we can no longer finish ahead of them, I am afraid.
Kent have been pretty spineless with the bat for most of the season and I think the idea that they would bat 4.5 sessions or so lies in the realm of fantasy.
What short memories some people have.
The decision to let 12 overs drift does seem an odd one, though. If it was a "Brearley at Headingley '81" type scenario to fire Caddy up (which seems the only likely explanantion to me, particularly given the lack of explanation to Caddick himself) then surely 12 overs was too many. Let's see what it might do to Caddy's second innings bowling though, eh?
Leave the skipper alone chaps,he's brought us a long way.
Quote:Frome Exile
I can't really be bothered to check now, but I'm pretty sure some of those berating the fact that he didn't bowl first-up yesterday are the same people who said his contract shouldn't be renewed two years ago!
What short memories some people have.
Totally irrelevant. Horses for courses.

Maybe he won't be allowed to bowl in the 2nd innings.
I'm sick of the way some people just change with the wind.
If some people had had their wish Caddick wouldn't have even been there to bowl yesterday, and now they moan that he didn't bowl first. The word "fickle" doesn't do it justice.
After Caddick's performances last season it would take a person of exceptional stupidity not to have seen the error of his view.
Even I have been known to change what is laughingly called my mind.

Of course it's not irrelevant, Botham.

Perhaps you ought to get back in to bed and get out at the other side.
We need;
Us to win;
Notts to lose/draw;
Durham to lose/draw
That's it I think.
us - draw/lose
notts - draw
durham - win
making durham champs, i think

Fair enough, bobstan: as you suggest, everyone is entitled to change his or her mind. It would be nice though if all those who had changed their minds had the humility to acknowledge that they had been in error, rather than jumping straight onto the next hobby horse, even if it is running in completely the opposite direction to their previous "mount".
Ah, now that I accept totally.
If Durham win this I will be very upset!

I suppose the next big question is whether Durham will come back out after lunch.
They have, but why wouldn't they? Bat for a big lead, so they needn't bat again.
Are you wrestling AG ?
It is all unbearably exciting isn't it ??
Unlucky for Brown - presumbaly he missed out on a well-deserved century?
Still, I expect it will prove to have been a match-winning innings. More power to him.
1) we win our game
2) durham don't win
3) notts don't win
1 looks unlikely, 2 looks unlikely, 3 is a possibility
But you just never know....
But yes, your thinking is sound. The above scenario would, I believe result in an SCCC title win.. I think...

I think I'd have batted on, too. But I'd have struggled to eat any lunch while I thought about it!
Of course, what my dad had said to me was that the great man was looking entirely untroubled.

It's over
Not yet, it isn't. These boys should have a dip and see where they get to, IMHO. Walter Lawrence, anyone?
Come on boys,give them hell.
It looks like Durham have handled it and our lot - and the Notts boys - have not.
I can't really imagine that it's exactly turning square out there, however?
Gareth Breese.
Give me him on a rugby field.
Well, enter the GREAT Ian David Blackwell.
And Charl Willoughby to bowl spin?
He did it on a bunsen burner at Whitgift. And did it well

I'd just like to say that I think the combo of Rob Key & Joe Denly is rubbish and will never get a match saving score.
JL Denly.....c & b Thorp.............9
RWT Key......c Chanderpaul b Thorp...0
And here starteth my career as a pundit...
If my memory serves me right Durham only narrowly missed out last season. I just hope we can come back like they did and build on the good foundations. I just hope that there isn't any fallout from what seems to have been going on in the last few months.
Mind you, some of the shots were shocking.

Can we infer from this that Ian is actually staying, after all?
i.e. should we expect a list of those "not retained," or are we going to get a separate announcement about one particular player?
At least reassure us that LoL will still be on the teamsheet here in 2009 !
Grizzzly
P.S. I just wonder...............could you possibly be intimating that.....................JL might not be here next year ?
Anyway looks a different game now that Lancs are batting. I think we need a bowler and batsman for next year as we need to progress. We just haven't won enough games. You cant blame the weather, it was the same for the others too.
Off to lunch and a couple of beers.
Opening bowler Callum Thorp, who looked decidedly ordinary against us at Taunton earlier this month, has so far taken all five Kent second innings wickets for very few runs.

Botham doesn't like the commentary now! Did anyone hear Tractor on Radio Lancashire yesterday?
Does anyone, apart from Lancastrians?
If you feel that deflecting your Somerset frustration onto me helps you, then please jump on the bandwagon.
Phil Tottle was doing some of the commentary wasn't he? Don't think he's a Lancastrian and when it's all there is you're just grateful for small mercies I suppose

You and some fellow Grockles make me important by your constant sniping.
Well done lads,all of you.
The relegation battle is very interesting and well worth keeping an eye on.
It's all to play for at both ends of the table.
Boring this four day stuff isn't it?
Going by his lack of 1st team cricket I wonder if it might be Phillips.
Phil Tottle will not be here next year (has he been here his year) I believe he wants out.
He has got a lot of stick from several people at the ground, as he correctly said it is not his fault but his bosses at the BBC.
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]As for the "departure" Ben Phillips is a good shout, be happier if it was Banks.
I fear it is someone more high profile but next few days/weeks should tell us a lot.
Not sure of JL's diary but guessing he'll be back off to Aus fairly soon, and guess he'll have a BIG say in any leavers
Somebody said yesterday when the crowd reaction by cheering when Langer eventually bowled the two opening bowlers it's alleged he said something to the crowd.
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]When our lads came out after tea a number of spectators were still on the field. JL was definitely exchanging words with a group of 3 or 4 chaps, he didnt look to be commenting on how nice the weather was! All the guys had pint glasses in hand so guessing there may have been some comments made to him?!?!
Many thanks for your good wishes, posted on the Durham site.
If the pennant does fly over the Riverside, and it is not a foregone conclusion,it will be a massive achievement for the youngest county.
I know how disappointed you all must be , but ,if it is any consolation,Somerset were my concern as the threat to Durham's title ambitions, especially after the game at the Riverside.
Do not be too down hearted about your County coach and administrators either. You have done well to threaten all season after promotion from Div 2. The Kent supporters are tearing themselves apart ,if their Kent CCC bulletin board is anything to go by.Do not descend into those realms.
Remember "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events and small minds discuss people."
Good luck for next season and some cracking 4 day cricket.
Somerset can show that are great.
Easily the best thing I`ve read on this site in many a moon. I learn from Google that it originates from Eleanor Roosevelt.
It is the perfect message for ego-trippers.
Disappointing day also Lancs have out played us in the match.
P Horton – Caddick only just missing the bat.
Ian Blackwell scoring runs to achieve a 1000 runs for the season.
This year Ian has impressed me with is ability to adjust his normal way of playing to fit the situation, where some of our top order batsmen have not.
This sweep shot by Thomas got him out, ct Newby bld Keedy.
Yet Thomas played some good shots with this delicate glide off the face of the bat for four runs
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]I must say though that i am a great fan of JL and what he has done for us in the past 2 years.
Has anyone heard any reaction from him yet on todays play?
Glad you see the value in it.
The club is well run, providing facilities for spectators and non-watching families, alike. They are a credit to professional sport.
Their strong performance at Hove, and Kent`s dismal one at Canterbury, mean they should certainly be playing Division One cricket next summer.
But it looks as though they are about to part company with their sponsor. Bradford & Bingley are is such dire financial straits that the government is set to nationalise them on Monday in Northern Rock mode.
Yorkshire must hope the B&B cheque doesn`t bounce.
It'll be quick and clean when it starts I suppose but its a shame we couldn't be still in a game in the sun of the last day of the season but there you go.
The announcement didn't come so I assume the rumour was just that. I'll wait and see what happens today but with luck it has come to naught.
Excellent photos Mike. I've been remiss in not putting them onto the stories recently. I'll try and put that right in the next few days. There are some to come from the PA boys as well - they seem to have covered out end to the season quite well.
Oh and Mr B. I'm sure that if you stopped the constant moaning people would probably stop the "constant sniping" and your seemingly unwelcome 'importance' would wink out of existence.

The only two counties we beat - Kent (twice) and Surrey - were the two who were relegated. And the only two who defeated us - Yorkshire and Lancashire - were the ones that survived the relegation battle.
One other thing that bears mentioning about Durham's triumph - remember, folks, they lost an entire game to the rain. All the more remarkable that they were able to win it.
Quote:AGod
Then again, we could easily have been in a stronger position before the awful weather hit, had we pressed home 'winning,' positions in early season home games with Hants and Sussex.
Or had we not lost an entire day against Lancs when they were underperforming.
But as you say, AG, no-one can really say Durham haven't deserved it. Congrats to the geordies, mackems and all!

With 2 defeats and, arguably, only the rain saving us from a third in home games, one would have to say that our form on the road was quite a bit better than at home. We will surely need better home form next season.
Day 4 the two wickets and “The Hill”
M Chilton out on 97 – looks like he may have gloved it to the wicketkeeper off Caddick.
P Horton looking to see if it carried to the slip, it did.
ct Trescothick bld Caddick
“The Hill” what a joke if it was supposed to give a better view of the church, I can’t see it. (Literally) once the plants have been added into the top of the wall it will not be a lot lower than the “Ridley Stand”
Rob if you do not wish to have your photo posted do what the lady in the photo is doing. (that’s provided you know it is being taken). see insert.

The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]Do we have to stand on top of that wall?
Great stuff Mike,you're a star.
They really have helped those of us miles from Taunton to get a feel of the action.
It is a Sky interview with Somerset's favorite son Ian Blackwell after day two of the Lancs game.
