The BBC Explain
Who will speak out?
By Grockle/Evelyn
March 26 2009
Evelyn was one of those who mailed the BBC about radio coverage of the county. And she is one who got a reply....here it is.......
This site hs been in a long running debate with the BBC in the form of "BBC Bristol/Somerset Sound" about the fact that they seem incapable or unwilling to cover cricket in the county in any meaningful way.
"Evelyn" sent them this
"What are your plans for covering S.C.C.C. this season? Please tell me that it will be better than last year."
She got this in return
"Thanks for getting in touch. We are planning for our cricket coverage to include commentary on one day games and Twenty20 games (something that has proved very popular). We will have a reporter at some of the four day games depending on resources, and will continue our bulletin service and the online scoreboard for all matches. We will also aim to cover in full the local derbies and, depending on how Somerset fare, towards the end of the season we would hope to step up our coverage of the closing stages of the County Championship. This is the agreement that we reached
with SCCC.
Having said that, you're absolutely right that the regularity of our
score updates and the extent of our end of season coverage last season was not as good as I'd like it to be, and we're aiming to do better this year.
Much as I'd love to be able to cover all the games, unfortunately we operate on very tight resources. We have to think carefully about the value for money we achieve in terms of how much output is generated for each man hour spent by our staff. Committing to cover every game would be very expensive, and in these lean times sending a reporter off to cover every 4 day game would mean that we would simply be unable to sustain other parts of our basic everyday output.
Thanks again for your email, and while I'm sure you'd have been hoping I'd be able to promise full coverage, I hope you can appreciate the reasons why we have to cut our coat accordingly...
All the best
Jess

Better than usual but not as good as many hoped I would imagine. Intersting comment on some of this being in agreement with Somerset themselves.....have they got plans? Watch this space.

What it doesn't say however is how cricket is measured in terms of importance relative to other sports, including the ghastly leather bladder !
Grizzzly
The plans outlined in the letter appear to represent a step forward compared with last season. I suspect that plans for future seasons (and for the end of this season) will depend in part on how much interest appears to have been generated by their crcket coverage. So, the outcome may to some extent rest in our own hands ...
Simon White, of course, was a great supporter and friend of Somerset cricket, and sadly when he left BBC Somerset to go to pastures new, the cricket coverage appeared to go into decline.
I am encouraged by Jess's response to Evelyn's e - mail, and really do not think that we, as cricket supporters, could expect anything better in this day and age.
Apple AM have also stated that they plan live ball – by - ball coverage of all Somerset's one day games this season.
At least they have responded, though given the coverage other local BBC stations are giving I find it a rather lame explanation.
Agreed with the club?
They're happy with that?
T20 coverage,as it's so popular?
If my dog was still here I'd kick her.
"Other improvements include a new public address system and better facilities for disabled supporters. We will even have Ball by Ball commentary for all Championship matchdays provided by our own commentary team broadcast throughout the ground. Headsets for partially sighted people will be available on loan from the Commercial Office and the commentary will also be streamed through www.somersetcricketclub.co.uk so you can keep up with the action when not at the ground"
This seems a very positive step forward by the club and may be their own response to the dire offerings from BBC Somerset last year.
Do wonder who the commentary team might be? Peter Lane et al, Brian Rose (?) or possibly the Apple FM folk.
Might be a job here for Big Jim and Grockle !!?

I did not write a letter myself, but I am happy to give credit to Evelyn for having done so, and for sharing the reply that she received back with us here.
Sadly, one will never please all of the people all of the time.
Thank you also Sloop John B for giving us the Club's pronouncements on some of their intentions this forthcoming season.
I would imagine that Mr. Lane will continue to work the Club's PA system, but there is a very competent and pleasant man who did some work by means of Podcast? interviews for the club's official site in 2007. He has done some work on sports broadcasting for the BBC in Wiltshire, as well as on Apple AM, and I am sure that he would do a very good job if engaged to do so. I won't mention his name because he may well have other work to do by now.
Won't it be exciting if it all comes to fruition? I must invest in an internet radio. Does anyone know anything about them?

).
And as the statement was that any Somerset content will be streamed via the web-site, I assume that one is likely to need a PC (or Mac
) in order to get at at what will be a stream featured on a web-site rather than an internet radio station per se.Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2009:03:26:12:57:01 by Frome Exile.
I am afraid that I am unable to keep abreast of all this change to communication technology; besides everything here works solely in conjunction with the tides.
If it came over to me like that I'm sure it came over like that to others too.
It matters not anyway, that is excellent news SjB.
My main concern is for my wife who after a life of supporting SCCC and whose Uncle played for the County may never get to see a live match again.
For her the live commentary of CC matches will be a God-send.
Cheers for all those concerned, that really is fantastic news.
The pronouncement was in a letter from Richard Gould enclosed with my Membership stuff.
It is a sad reflection on today's society in general when a comment (however inadequately made in the eyes of some) praising the politeness and courtesy of an individual, is misinterpreted perhaps as being a stab in the back to others.
Why is there so much sadness in the world, I wonder?
Anyway, as you say, Big Jim "it matters not anyway." I hope that your wife (and many others) will find great comfort in listening to the proposed live commentary on County Championship matches.
And long may it continue.
So learning my left from my right and looking hard at that diagram of main fielding positions while remembering not to swear or assume that the peope listening can see the game will be paramount.
I hope it works and the system is robust. The best commentary I heard last year was local stuff. Not sure how we'll stand up to those who have been doing it though.
What's next? Somerset TV? Who'd have thunk it?

Anyway, thank you once again for forwarding us with your reply Evelyn. I hope that I haven't inadvertently said anything on here to cause you any offence.
I certainly wasn't offended by your remarks, but can see how they could have been misread.
The nature of the written word is to detroy all nuance, isn't it.
No blood spilled!

I bow to your superior command of the English language, Frome Exile.
I am sure that Big Jim is pleased to have your support.
No hard feelings.
I've been there from both sides of that partcular foible of forums.

As far as I can see this will be of no improvement for me unless I cannot attend a home game for any reason.
I've sent the following e-mail to tim.pemberton@bbc.co.uk,
the boss man at Radio Bristol and BBC Somerset.
Dear Mr Pemberton,
I wish to enquire if you intend improving your cricket coverage in the forthcoming season or are we still going to receive an inferior coverage as usual.
I know I'm banging my head against a brick wall but at least he is aware of my feelings.
Could as many as possible do likewise. It doesn't take much to send an e-mail.
Rob
I believe Phil Tottle left the job at the end of last season he was so fed up with the local coverage, unless he changed his mind.
Has anybody heard him doing the football commentary this winter?
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]Nice positive letter there Rob,it made me chuckle.
There's nothing like trying to suck up to and praise people in power.

As BBC Somerset seems to be a subsidiary of an non cricket interest BBC Bristol don't expect a whole lot of coverage exxccept in between overs at some Gloucestershire match.

I well remember one saturday sat at Ashley down watching a local Derby and Radio Bristol were covering live tag rugby.
We've all got our tales.
We must be one of if not the worst covered sports on local radio countrywide.
Anyone got an old CB rig lying around?
10-4 for a copy.
Nothing is impossible nowadays.
Our leader is in on the know nowadays.Surely he could pull a few strings.
I reckon if Apple want to eat up the market we could supply a few expert summarisers.
Or as in Tractors case sun visors>

I don't know much about Apple but it would be good if they could do it and if finance was a problem perhaps some sort of sponsorship or whip round could clinch it.
There may be broadcasting rights which might hinder it.
Does anybody know?
Does anybody know if it has been relocated.

As I'm awake at this ungodly hour I've decided to e-mail Mr Pemberton again.
It goes like this
Dear Tim,
Further to my unanswered e-mail of 12th February could you tell me what sort of coverage you intend to supply during the coming season?I am hoping that you have found the finance for a better service than the abysmal show by BBC Bristol and BBC Somerset during the last two seasons. As you know Somerset are one of the top teams in the County Championship,so I think they deserve as good a coverage as many of the lesser sides such as Middlesex and Surrey who receive an excellent service.
Could you enlighten me also to the whereabouts of Phil Tottle during this winter as nobody has seemed to have heard him doing his bit for football,as it had been expressed that he was retiring?
I am sure that you will endevour to give us as good a service as possible but wouldn't it be great for both counties if you could produce the best, and perhaps a bit more coverage of local cricket.
Many thanks
BristolRob

I'm hoping for a bit of back up here and would be grateful if as many people asd possible could e-mail Mr Pemberton reitterating what I said.

If that fails perhaps I could dress up as Batman and insade the BBC Bristol office proporting to represent Grockles for Justice or hand cuff BigJim to the Taunton offices.
I will see if I can find the link.

Edited to add link.
I found this complaint link but it is not the local one.
Perhaps we should take the complaint higher up.

Just to make you all more angry. The following was anounced on the Yorkshire CCC Offy site.
'The Yorkshire County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that BBC Radio will be increasing their coverage of Yorkshire cricket in 2009 to include live ball-by-ball commentary on all of our matches'
I wait though,with anticipation.
Why don't you try the head of radio sport at BBC Bristol.
Mr Geoff Twentyman, an old gashead I know but you generally get a response from him unlike his boss who should surely be on his way soon with all that is going on at the station.
geoff.twentyman@bbc.co.uk
Not heard anything yet.
Here at the BBC in Bristol we don't have the slightest interest in the only county in our region that is playing first division cricket. Far more important to us is to cover the exploits of a failing second division side as well as two of the city's football clubs who would not countenance tarnishing their image by competing at the highest national level of the game.
Those are our priorities; your priorities are a matter of complete indifference to us.

Aren't you?
I've seen these secret agents at work in the cold war.
He's already mentioned freezing this morning.
Read between the lines.
The truth is out there.
He's coming to see me today anyway...he's here now.
It's not raining and he has an umbrella.
What's this about.
What'.............
LoL
Sixty-six Seasons a Somerset Supporter
The music of that has the best bassline ever.
Listen to it and see what you think.
Ahh, that bassline.
Lol turning up with a brolly when it's not raining? This goes nicely with all those public information cartoons where the film ends with a downpour and Lol (I'm sure it was him) announcing "... wish I'd brought me brolly!" I think he was advising us to cross the road when the green man was flashing, - not the one where he's sat next to his wife Petunia on a beach somewhere watching someone drown.
Still no radio coverage from the BBC then.

The best ones were the Charlie says adverts, the one with the idiot child and ginger cat who could talk.
Well,cat talk anyway.
The one with them playing on the swings in the park is my favourite where the chap approaches and asks if they want to come and see some puppies.
The child says yes,but Charlie.
He say no.
Well,he said "gorrumfhorplussorrgggoollmm" anyway which the child took to be "don't go with the stranger".
Now that is a great message to any child, remember that kiddywinkles.
If we move forward thirty years it's a bit like some bloke sat in the pub and me approaching with tips for Cheltenham.
Charlie would suddenly appear and say to the bloke(not our bloke)"gorrumfhorplussorrgggoollmm",which would mean in human speak,"don't listen to that idiot, send him away back to the coast where he belongs".
Charlie was a very wise cat.
And he always got something nice from the little boys mother at the end.
A nice big cuddle.
Or was it live mice to play with?
I can't remember.
Those information films influenced an entire generation and were / are relevant while we have youngsters reading the posts.
Not so sure they'd be well received nowadays though. Nowhere near suited to the demographic people and H&S clipboard types.
You'd also have to make them non-gender specific and be aware of heritage equality.
And there were far to many mind-bending drugs used in the production!
Man ...
VtF.
I just don't know how many times we can say we're no further down the road as regards radio coverage.
Notice how he didn't tell Tractor to be quiet.
Gashead you see.
Scared of the reds.
And he knows it.
that's played on radio sometimes, even in Somerset...
Got a link for me please?
I should say that the Juliet Bravo bassline is the cheesiest bassline ever.
I love it.
I love cheese.
And I love the radio(note the cunning radio link to keep Rob happy?)
I'm not in a bad mood Jim.What made you think that?Been watching ladies playing tennis down the tennis courts near me.Very pleasant on the eye.Wish I could join in!
'BBC Essex have extended their support to county cricket by broadcasting live ball-by-ball commentary of every Essex game in the coming season, both home and away'
Since the New Year they have had only two Somerset items.
22nd January “Suppiah suffers residency set back”
8th March “Origin of Somerset ‘baggy green’ sought. (Something about an ex-policeman finding a cap).
Pathetic!
It relates to the former Somerset groundsman Cecil Buttle.
The tale goes that Greg Chapple gave his 1972 Aussie Cap away as a raffle prize for Buttle's benefit.
It came to light in a house in Somerset when our detective policeman was investigating an incident.
The guys at the Somerset CCC museum have been on the case.
Click on the link from Surrey TV and watch the full story.
Most interesting.

Many other counties have coverage of matches by the BBC.
So why not Som/Glos?
We have Radio Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire and even Devon covering the area.
An On-line petition anyone!
It's a ridiculous state of affairs, the club must want the games broadcasted.
The local BBC are obviously,a joke.
We'll just have to rely on the other counties bringing their people with them and listen to home games on their away game commentary channels as we do now!!
I think the problem is the Bristol connection Ajay. We are the larger county with a wider spread population but we are dictated to by the needs of the concentrated population of Bristol in terms of what coverage local radio makes.
It's the same in Gloucester and Cheltenham where the TV and local coverage tends to have a Birmingham and West Midland bias.
Radio Bristol (believe me, the 'Somerset Sound' aspect of it is an after thought) tries to be too many things to too wide and area and we become marginal within that. Even if cricket coverage became a priority in the sports budget, it would be Gloucestershire that benefitted and Somerset who were the poorer relations simply as a geographical necessity. Besides the fact that it would be easier to commentate on the Bristol games for a Bristol based radio station.

I'm sure the club could sort this out,it has fans the world over.
What a great way to contact those fans.

I also used to listen to Phil Tottle's regular reports on Somerset Sound and enjoy some banter by email through the studio presenter.
I really hope that something can be sorted out for this season.

Astonishing.
Please let us know what they have said evelyn.
I think I can predict though....

A list of about seven reasons stating why they can't cover cricket in the Somerset area .
With so many ways avaliable to cover sport on the DAB and internet frequencies there really is no excuse for not covering the summer sport in the West Country, shame on you BBC , shame .
I don't like cricket so hard luck.
The link to my Photos on Photobucket - [s1152.photobucket.com]"We don't like cricket, our administrators are ex footballers so they don't understand it and we don't want to spend money (we could keep for pre-season football) on it."
simple really.

Thanks Evelyn...got that. Will upload it to the frontpage later.

The team of commentators for the County Matches at Taunton met today with representatives of the club and the RNIB to prepare to provide on ground and internet based commentary for the CC games through the official website.
We will be running through the kit during part of the friendlies in the early part of April and will hopefully be fully up and running for the first day of the Warwickshire CC1 match on 15 April.
There should be additional e-mail access for those listening on the Net and handsets available for those partially sighted or blind spectators at the ground.
It is going to be a steep learning curve for some of us during April so please be patient but at least you'll get some feel for what is going on to supplement Cricinfo!
As you have already read, one day and T20 games will be covered by a mixture of Apple AM and BBC teams so we should have full coverage at Taunton.
No away coverage I'm afraid except when the opposition have it but it's moving in the right direction.

From what Wikipedia has to say about Internet Radio devices, I can't see that they offer any advantage over a PC (or Mac).
Clarence (and anyone else who's interested).
I bought a DAB digital radio at the weekend, but before I did, I had a very informative discusssion with a very helpful young sales assistant about the merits of DAB versus Internet radios. I made my point above, and his answer was that if you access the internet via a wireless router or hub, then the Internet radio can access via that without the need for the PC to be on.
DAB is not available everywhere, so for some an internet radio might be the way to go, although I'm still not certain that a commentary stream accessed via the website would be accessible to such a device.
Hope that is also of help.
Are you able to disclose who "the team of commentators" are please?
Also, thanks for your information above, F.E. I had hoped that perhaps I could have listened to the commentary of Somerset's games whilst in the garden via an internet radio, as I access the internet via a hub.
I shall have to 'hang fire' on this for the present, until I establish whether or not a commentary stream is accessible.
Thanks once again.
Have to wait, hope the stream works and see what you think once we're online.

I have a very portable digital radio, but it has pre-set stations and I have never been able to pick up Somerset Sounds on it, presuming either that SS is not a pre-set station or that Somerset is too far from London for a signal to be picked up anyway.
The alternative has been to sit indoors and listen through the internet. Now that I have conversted to WiFi, I am assuming that I shall be able to carry my computer into the garden and listen there as long as the computer's elastic bands continue to work.
Does anybody have anything better to suggest (apart from the obvious one of attending all the matches person)?

Quote:Why can't I listen to BBC Somerset on DAB? BBC Somerset is due to broadcast on DAB (digital radio) when the new digital multiplex is launched in 2010.
Some BBC Local Radio services are carried on capacity made available by commercial platform operators.
This is because the BBC's own digital multiplex is already used to full capacity for the national BBC services.
Not that that will help you access Grockle FM of course.
I think the wireless laptop in the garden is your best option.
Not cheap, but perhaps "M" could be persuaded that they are a legitimate field expense?

Thankfully, many 'opposing, counties do have radio stations that can and do provide such coverage.
But the innovation of which you speak should be hugely welcome for the home games, Grockle.

I think we're flogging a dead horse now as far as the BBC are concerned.
Glad to see you guys will be getting some coverage this season but the tenor of the BBC reply appeared to be " if you do really well we will give you coverage , if not ?"
Nice to see that finally someone got more than a "bog standard" reply from their local BBC which after all they fund so should have some say in what they cover .
As for the "internal" Somerset coverage , brilliant response by the club and the RNIB to the possibility of no coverage which was the limbo the Beeb left you in for so long and good luck to all those involved in this project .
