After the loss to Notts we move into the short game phase of the season with a number of questions still to answer. First the FPT and then the 20/20 gives chances to some but what kind of outfit will return to the CC on 6 June? Will the next month clear up some things or cause more uncertainty about our best outfit?
v Middlesex FPT @ Bath Monday 4 May 2009
32.4 overs. 111 runs and an 8 wicket victory in front of a festival crowd. Great result but possibly not for Bath as the game lasted less than four hours!
Peter Trego found swing and took 4 for 17 in 10, Phillips bagged 3 in 7 and Alfonso 2 in 2 for 5, Charl took the other one. Middlesex murdered and more points in the coffers. On to Trent Bridge
v Nottinghamshire CC1 @ Trent Bridge Wednesday 6 May 2009
First away Championship game of the season and a few problems still in the bowling department. Caddick still sidelined, Turner coming back from injury in the seconds and Jones still turning his arm over for the Kent outfit. David Stiff is once again given the opportunity to impress and Ben Phillips is back from the pull that kept him out of part of the Durham game.
The toss was ors but there will be a question about the decision to bat. Another failure in real terms with the willow. 138 with Zander making almost half of that was simply not good enough. Even though a Charl fivefer kept us in the game and an excellent tight 20 over spell for Stiff suggested we may have found a real asset, we were constantly chasing this game. 261 all out for the home team left us over 120 adrift.
The second innings showing was better with a near ton for MT and lost of mid scores for others. But in a finely balanced game without weather interuptions, if you give the other side an advantage then you lose the game. Lo and behold! In spite of 383 on the board we had too little to defend on a flattening pitch and Notts were home by early afternoon on day 4.
Same problem. We only batted properly once and our bowling isn't incisive enough to defend that at the moment. Not a Championship winning start I'm afraid but we have until June 6 to sort it out and a lot of game to try things to get it right.
Scotland? Warwickshire? Kent?
the seconds gave us something in the spin department. Max Waller is called into the 13 for the Scotland game. Mark Turner is also in but as he didn't look fit during the same game it is doubtful that he will play. Is the 'Grocklee' up to a full season of first class cricket?
Zander is working well in the one day format but is that causing problems for the more local talent in the four day frame? Neil Edwards seems to be making runs in the seconds but can't get a look in at number 2 in the full side. Arul Suppiah is worth his place in the top 5 but are we pushing away another player with a future at the club by consintuing to rely on a kolpak batsman? Will Langer ever bet on the youngsters until the top 6 consistently perform in both innings? It isn't Mr de Bruyn's fault now is it?
We still see one of our own bowling in the South West while we have bowling issues at third (and possibly second) seamer. Has Steffan's time at Taunton come to an end? Hope not but he must be wondering wher his future lies given that he is on loan but the problems at home have not required the management to ask for his return. Big month for him if he comes into the reckoning for the next few games or the 20/20.
Ben Phillips may have to come up to the line and play a much more significant role in the season than expected because of the increasing doubt that we will see our beneficiary playing in many games in 2009 (or ever again for that matter). Andy Caddick our talisman and 'go to guy' for a decade or more seems to be unable to shake off this presdent injury (a re-occurance of an earlier version?) and the time many hoped might never come has arrived. We seem to be entering the "Post Caddick" era without an adequate replacement unless something changes. Charl Willoughby will continue to provide but he needs consistent wicket taking service to do that. Maybe that is going to come from David Stiff?
Plucked out of the relative obscurity of his third county in a short career, we seem to have a little more than expected in the big man. His first outiing was very variable but showed intersting aspects, His second was still not wicket filled but 20 overs in a championship with an average of just over 3 is worth looking at.
Spinners? We need one that takes wickets. Mike Munday took 7 of them in the second run out at the County ground mid week but it isn't enough to get himn a one day place for this next week. he has been pipped to that post by the young seconds captain Max Waller who doesn't float it as much and beats his older colleague in the batting and bowling areas. But it might be a good omen for both forms of the game.
It is also a call to arms for another two spinners. Omari Banks has been the choice for the teams up until now because he is the best spin option we had. if that position is usurped and the batting continues to be unreliabel then it opens the door for Wes Durston to put forward his claim. A second spinner really BUT an immeasurably better batsman than both he could be preferred to the West Indian if the two young twirlers start to lay a claim to the slow man spot.
Thes next few games are time for us to settle this side, We need to know what the position is with our lanky Mr C. We need to see this spin option sorted and some performance with the ball and we need to see batsmen cementing their places for the long haul. The 20/20 is an opportunity for some. the lay off from four day cricket is an obstacle for others - will Edwards finally get a shot in a short game as many have requested for more than one season?
It all starts tomorrow with probably a familiar side unless Waller makes a play.

The online commentary team have given us the news that Justin Langer is absent because of 'illness' rather than injury. It gives a chance for the first class first appearance for 'Grocklee' Wes Durston who is favoured to Max Waller and brought into the squad of 13 that only had one real eleven that was ever going to take the field.
Trescothick, Kieswetter, Suppiah, Durston, Hildreth, de Bruyn, Trego, Banks, Thomas, Phillips, Willoughby
We won the toss and chose to field and then we proceed to beat them to death! Nice fresh conditions, lovely pitch and fair to mediocre bowling. Enter Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter although the wicketkeeper didn't get into the runs today being bowled by Nel (not that one). After that we get 270 for the second wicket against Scotland (new record for the home side) with the captain taking 144 off 108 balls and Hildreth taking 151 off 141! Sheer bloody murder and no mistake. When the skipper went in came Peter Trego at number 3 - light relief? Not really. He smashes 74 off 39 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes before Stander gets some joy after having two catches dropped off him by bowling Hildreth before he ends with 1 for 106 off his 10 overs!!
Somerset finish on 403 for 3 - a winning score? Well it is at Taunton where 10 an over is perfectly easy for the most mediocre of batsmen. We need to be very tight and get rid of them quickly.
Gavin Hamilton opens with Poonia against Charl Willoughby and Peter Trego and Pete gets Poonia to stand in front of one at 18 so we are among them. However, Hamilton has become a cricketer at one with his lot and he sets himself down to anchor his side's innings as a captain batsman should. So we move through the first half of the innings with Scotland making little in-road into the run rate but not giving chances for us to skittle them. Willoughby gives way to Phillips and then to Banks. Trego gives way to Thomas while Hamilton moves past 50 (54 balls 6 fours). It is the south african who does get the Scots captain after he realises that they are getting too far behind and tries to push the score along with shots in the air just over fielders at mid off and mid on. He swipes at an Alfonso straight one and loses his off peg at 62 with his side on 91. that is the end of credible attempts to keep up with the rate.
By the time Watson gets to his 50 at 149 (65 balls and 3 fours) we are in the 29th over they are 77 behind the D/L required score and this game is effectively over. Scotland take their powerplay here at 151 with Alfonso back on at the OP. Then Borgas was beautifully stumped off his bowling at 154. Watson left the field at 67 bowled by our one day bowling star Zander de Bruyn and Stander made little impression being caught plumb in front after providing a score of 1. 5 down 15 short of the 200 and over 100 behind the D/L required score.
Smith and McCallum took the Saltires past the doubkle hundred before ZdB skittled Smith out for 15 and it seems unlikely that they will pass 250 as we come into the 49th over where Parker was bowled by Trego at 244 for 8 - 244 for 7. The D/L score required? 393!!
Rogers doesn't bother the scorer as he becomes Trego's second bowled victim of the over and Scotland slump to 244 for 8. Weeraratna is in at number 10 facing the last over from Alfonso Thomas. A misfield for 4 off the first and leg bye off the second gets the Northerners to 250 and also allows McCallum the chance to go to 50 off the next ball. His innings came off 61 balls with a six and 2 fours - good middle order effort that in a losing cause. Unfortunately he is caught behind of his 62nd ball - the last ball of the game and we win by 151 runs.
Four out of four people....next one on Thursday against the Bears.
Odds on five out of five? The Man of the Match award was shared between Marcus and James who scored his highest one day score today.

I want to see us mix things up in the T20 to get lots of different people some first-team chances.
Difficult to make a case for too many changes to the FPT team after the excellent start that we have made. Wouldn't be surprised if we see a change or two versus Scotland, though.
Really want to see our Grockle-sponsored, Mr Durston, in action soon.
I doubt that the one-day stuff will provide much clarity about our best CC side because the personnel involved are likely to prove different.
I would like to see Mark Turner do well in the short stuff, though, as he did very well at Old Trafford last year and so I'd like him to put his best foot forward to be in the team for the CC resumption.

But Turner against Lancashire last year is like Munday against Notts (?). One performance does not a career make and its time for us to talk about something alittle more recent in both their cases.

Yes, though in the case of Turner I think the fast Old Trafford strip suits him. So I wouldn't only be thinking of picking him for that game because he did well there last time but, rather, because I think there's a reason why he did well there, last time out.

I know its a while yet but listening to radio commentary of the warks/kent match, at Canterbury, Spinners are dominating.Perhaps a case for a specialist spinner and a spin all-rounder when we go there?

Are those the same three Kent spinners we didn`t `look too good against` at Taunton last month, while taking them for a combined 138 runs in 22 FPT overs? I do believe it is.

The good news is that we're in with a shout in the one day stuff; Marcus, Trego, Kieswetter are all very good players in this format.
The bad news is in the championship we have struggled and it could be a battle against relegation this year.
None of the problems are suprising; a first innings collapse at Trent Bridge suggests our batsmen have to make a considerable !) adjustment from playing at Taunton. Once they do we're ok. Mix of experience and newish talent with Neil Edwards and possibly Wes Durston pushing at the door. I agree with Grockle De Bruyn is one Kolpak too many though he is the man in possession.
Unsuprisingly it's the bowling that worries. Without Caddick, permanantly perhaps we look short of class. Willoughby and Trego do fine in their respective roles but Phillips is only steady and we're asking an awful lot of Stiff.

It almost seems perverse to have one of your most experienced bowlers loaned out in these circumstances. Why is Alfonso Thomas so anonymous? Does Turner look like he's really got what it takes to anyone? Can we get 20 wickets in a match?
Most at risk is Banks who has been unimpressive. Munday will get his chance, but Arul's bowling wouldn't be worse than Banks and then we could bring in Edwards. Young Max Waller really won't have to do much to get a place.
All in all, apart from the @#$%& disappointing and predicatably

I am hoping to go down to Taunton tomorrow, Botham, if my transport doesn't let me down!
I lurk in the shadows of this site, so to speak, but I don't contribute very often now. Getting too old for petty bickering and enmity, I suppose.
I have noticed that things on here have appeared to be a little subdued recently, but I do appreciate your signature of "Standing for free speech."
On that point alone - a fundamental one of our great constitution - you will receive my vote, Botham.
Free tea and biscuits, have something to be said for them too, I suppose!

Yep KT I can appreciate how the likes of Trescothick and Langer who have batted hardly anywhere would have to get used to the minefield that is the Trent Bridge wicket after playing a couple of innings at Taunton.
They must have found it so hard to play Test cricket mustn't they with all those changes to wickets they had to play on?
They couldn't even get it right after playing at home once! They only had to play against Warwickshire and lost it compeltely against Durham in the next match!!!!
We really are knackered by that featherbed we play on aren't we when it turns highly experienced Test opening batsmen who have played all over the world into batting novices by simply batting on it.

Sorry to hear you're not happy with posting here any more Mr P although I can see how the incidents of the winter made some people a little bored with it all.
We finally produced enough material to return this site to its original postion. Maybe that was because we tried to protect "free speech" a little too far. It was finally thanks to a number of posters here and elsewhere working with the moderators to remove the unpopular and 'unconstitutional' aspects - it isn't always as easy as it seems.
However should you have particular issues with the operation of the site presently I'd really appreciate them via PM if possible simply because it's always good to have an external view of things.
I'm afraid I can't agree with you about Botham's signature. It tends to suggest to me an implication that there is some form of persecution here which has to be fought against and he is some kind of champion defending something which other posters don't see as important. I don't see that aspect of this site or Botham's role on it. That's my personal opinion however.
Botham has every right to post it as long as no-one else takes offence against it in a way that suggests it breaks the rules.
There are issues that presently create heated debate and sometimes that can go too far. However, overall that is not something that has just appeared. It has been here as long as I can rememember and, on the whole, most posters have their little spats and then return to calm.
Maybe the effect of the winter has gone a little deeper with some posters and it may take a little longer for them to get away from being a bit too prescious about things.
We'll have to see. There certainly would be no use in having a forum if peace and harmony were the only things that happened here and everyone has to be prepared to debate and back up comments should their views be questioned. As long as the items are sensible items for debate and that debate stays within certain parameters, it keeps the heart of the site pumping.
But you can't keep everyone happy all of the time so if you have any suggestions then please let me have them if you feel like it.

When the report from the coach (I think) said we failed to adjust to the conditions.

I see us in a similar boat to teams like Warks and Sussex this year - struggling to win games. The dissappointing thing is that those two teams have made a better fist of their first innings batting than we have and, hence, are ahead of us in the table.
I suppose Notts and Durham are two of the best bowling sides, but even so..

The point I was trying to make was that with all those international players in the team they should be able to adjust to any condition.

I honestly think that starting against the awful Warks attack was a bad thing. Most of our guys could deal with that attack with Boycott's mum's 'stick of rhubarb.'
I think we'd have been better off starting with a decent attack to harden the batsmen, not a cap-gun attack which may have led to complacency in the first dig vs Durham.

I note that Mr Hurry himself is quoted as saying (on the other site) that our batsmen need to "adjust technically," in the away games.
I'd guess that's his way of saying you don't go to Trent Bridge and just expect to hit the cover off the ball from the start...

The forecast for Warks is terrible, so might be Canterbury or even Lord's before Langer is required.

He's also got a great shot if they start to pick the specialist spinners because he has a much better pedigree (and batting average) than Omari if we need to bolster the batting to create space.

This score may give us the opportunity to give both Wes and James a long bowl (assuming the latter is not too tired after his knock.) If so, I'd like to see us take that chance.

There are 43 posts above on the match thread, & there does not appear to be much comment on the fact that we scored 403-3 with fantastic contributions of 140+ from Banger & JH.
I guess the fact that we can score that many in a one innings game (even at Taunton !), without comment, is a back handed compliment to our batting !

I think he's out of favour there, now that various first-team bowlers are back. He bowled only 6 overs or something silly in one innings of their most recent CC game and was either the 4th or 5th bowler used.

I note that Hildeth scored only (!) 13 fours (=52) in his 151 and I find that rather encouraging. That means he ran 99 runs, which presumably means lots of scoring strokes and change of strike.
And Trescothick's figures were similar (64 in boundaries; in the first hour they seemed to be running a lot of threes, but I had to go out after the first hour.

Hilder's 100 came up at about a run a ball. Him and Pete must have had fun (mostly off Stander I think) after that milestone was reached!! Looks very much like a 100 and some between them off about 70 balls!!

The new 3,000 seat Somerset stand had no more than 100 spectators. The Mound was well populated, as was the CA Pavilion. On a weekend, in glorious weather, with 3 wins on the bounce, one would expect at least 5,000.

For I see pretty much the same Scotland side was comprehensively beaten in the recent 2011 World Cup preliminaries by Afghanistan who, although they did not finish among the top four qualifiers, have now won official ODI status to play against the big boys in other tournaments.

Not really. I think we knew that Scotland are not exactly a tremendous force. But, as Mr Hurry said, we did contrive to lose to them before.
Also, my least favourite county, Lancs, had a spell of regularly losing to Scotland.
So they're still a potential banana skin and one that was dispatched in pretty clinical fashion.
Batting display was obviously excellent. The bowling display sounds rather more ordinary but that can often be the way when defending a total that is all but unassailable.

Mr Gould enjoyed my sense of humour yesterday, we were sat on the Gimblett Hill before the match when Richard Gould walk by and mentioned how windy it was, with a quick reply I said that the weather forecast did say it would be windier on the hills.
Insolently we could do with a few more people donating more park benches the Gimblett Hill is getting very popular.

We will know the truth better when Notts bat and if they score 400 then you have to say we've got it all wrong.Still early doors yet though.

Good question. I noticed last year that there were a lot of very quick matches at trent bridge particularly early season. I think the pitch often plays like this. Either way its a result pitch and a good fightback by the bowlers. We've gotta scrap and WANT it more than them. If we can get them out for no more than a 100 lead i still like our chances.....

The Cricinfo report mentions that the construction of high stands at Trent Bridge seems to encourage the ball to swing more than before, particularly on days like today which would have been good for swing anyway.

What concerns me if Steffan’s on loan to Kent because there was no second team cricket, yet this week they have had a one day game and are now are in the middle of a three day game.

what I don't understand is how NOTTS new young quick is evidently so much better than our Stiff. I watched him last week and can't understand why he's playing. We all know about Jones but Thomas should be playing in this game no danger. Also, why (after he bowled so well on Monday) is Trego only bowling today. Surely he would have been up for it last night when it was swinging/seaming and we could have had more out. I think that the decisions being made by management are at best dubious and we are paying for it now. We'll see how good the pitch/conditions are second innings no doubt

I was at Trent Bridge today but cant shed any light on the new choice of no.3. The only suggestion (from my Notts member mate) was Omari had to do something to distract him from watching the Windies wickets tumble at Lords.

- he'd scored runs in first innings so might play well;
- holding back better bats like Hildreth, Langer, ZDB and Kieswetter for better conditions tomorrow;
- nightwatchman (tho' quite early if that was the sole reason).

This match is very nicely poised thanks to some good bowling by Willoughby and Trego and batting by Trescothick and Langer. I hope we are not going to be robbed of certain victory yet again by the rain.
I am starting to think that in these days of recession none of us has any confidence in banks any more...

Still think N J Edwards MUST return.

So we are 14 for 3 . (effectively 2). If we bat at 4 an over and don't lose wickets while getting up to 450 we set Notts 300 in 16 overs tonight and tomorrow. Get 2 down tonight and Saturday is even more interesting. As you see I always look on the bright side. The first hour today is the vital one.

Agree entirely AGOD2. If management insist on getting players into the team who regularly contribute very little it makes you wonder about the motive for selecting them. I hate knocking any somerset player but for me certain people have not earned the right to play they are just preferences. It's one thing having a team of kolpaks who are the BEST option. Its another when you have young local players whos form is actually BETTER and can't get a look in!
I don't completely accept the argument that 1 or 2 good performances by the incumbents justify continued selection either. My team is;

He and Phillips have got us to that 250 mark which so many commentators say has 'psychological power.'
I think we'll still need to bowl really well and hold every chance though because basically everyone that has gone in for us today has been able to make runs so that does not exactly suggest a minefield out there.

This morning I was talking of setting Notts 300 .At the minute they need 259 plus whatever the might duo of Philips (well played-and Stiff) and that batsman of hidden talents Willoughby can produce. All the pressure is on Notts who ought to win. Good stuff again but I wish we scored runs in the innings when there are bonus points

I do have sympathies with KT's views here.
Over a non weather interrupted normal four day match, surely it is better viewing to see a game with a four innings aggregate of around 1100-1200, which usually has a better chance of a (non-manufactured) result, than one that sees the same amount of runs scored in the first two innings alone ?

1200 runs in four days would suggest 300 per day.
I dont think it should be the clubs aim to only aim for that total per innings, surely if we win the toss and bat we want to get 400 at least for the maximum batting points.

I am very much in 2 minds on this matter. The 2 commentators at the essex match were talking about this issue with reagrds to the warw match. At the time yorks had 600-8 breaking several batting records and warw were on their way to mimicking that effort. Then kablooey.Kruis and Naved blast through the batting.Made a mockery of what they were saying. they were obviously ofthe opinion that cos apparently essex got docked points for dodgy strips in 1989 the same should apply to strips which favour the batsmen too much.And guess who they sited as the other culprit. Yep. Somerset.Their theory and i'm with them to an extent on this was that teams prepare strips to maximise batting points creating dull no result games. Get the odd win away and you're safe. this is certainly born out by our mediocre record keeping us up last year. And i would rather see a match like the one at Notts than 600 each and a draw. thats common sense no? Having said that grockle is right. Sometimes bowlers use it as an excuse. There is a lot of sloppy bowling about band bowlers who can bowl at Taunton eg. Mr Caddick are clearly improved by the discipline required. Thats why i think Stiff is a good signing. Not just quick but tall and able to extract bounce like Caddick.

I'm with you Jim on the poor sessions, though I do wonder whether we should have put them in. A green wicket at Trent Bridge is a lot different to the same at Taunton, but having batted we must take some bonus points and not give the impetus straight back to the opposition.
We defenitely need some catching practice, or maybe sessions on improving concentration.
The CC game looks decidedly rusty, whereas we have improved tremendously in the 1 day stuff.

The pattern of scores in this game suggest that Langer got the toss wrong. That and abject first innings batting were the keys to defeat here...
But.... what was the thinking behind a virtual 2 man attack for most of their innings. Wasn't Pete underbowled YET again? Does Langer not think Pete can take wickets in unhelpful conditions? Does anyone here share that view? Pete has a career strike rate of 56 despite bowling on such noted terror tracks as Taunton, Lord's and Canterbury. I say that, if that's what Langer thinks, he is wrong.
What's the point of picking Banks if he's barely going to bowl? Pick Wes instead to strengthen what seems to be flimsy first innings batting?
And get Neil Edwards back.
Pray that Caddy can get back fit in time for June (getting really worried about that, though.)

I've said many times, we should play more games at outgrounds because, unlike Taunton they give us more chance of a win. Maybe we should look at switching CC games there!

Checked the score on the Motorway on the way back from Nottingham this morning and darn well would have crashed in the rain if I hadn't been being a responsible white van driver and stopped at the services when I did !!
Let's hope from a Middlesex point of view that we have got our "bad week at the office" out of the way nice and early this season .

When the plug was pulled on the CC game a couple of years ago I remember seeing a quote from Mr.Gould along the lines of it costing £75,000 to set up.
Whilst this cost may have reduced the vast majority of the overhead must surely remain. I love the idea of outground cricket but I have to wonder about the economics and whether it's financially viable.
Then, if you get on the back end of a result like Middx had at Southgate yesterday, there will be all manner of complaints about having to play on substandard pitches (whether they are or aren't).
Festival cricket has to be pitched at the correct time of year, relying on exciting cricket and fair weather to survive. I'm not so sure that today won't have added fuel to the arguments for cancelling these games and playing exclusively at the CG.
I always liked going to Bath to watch the games and hope they continue but dare say they'll have to be very well supported for that to happen.

Pitch seemed fine according to the Middlesex Clarence.
No real contributionto this one. Bowlers bowling to get the swing out of the overcast conditions. Something they didn't do in the Warwickshire game or Day 1 of the Durham game but something Durham did on Day 2. Both at HQ

Well guys, we've just got back and the ball certainly did seem to be moving all over the place, but I was sat side on, so it's merely a perception.
The guys I feel sorry for are Barmy Kev and his group, who were booked on the 19.45 train from Bath to London, the game finishing nearly six hours prior to this departure. I left them at lunchtime, looking for Grockle, though they'd have had difficulty finding him there!
Nice to see Tex, resplendent as ever, stood next to the irrepressible Tractor and Richard, wearing woollen gloves. It was that cold.
A few comments about the venue:-
A lovely half hour walk along the canal tow-path from Bathampton.
No obvious facilities for Business Club members, not even the free programme.
We couldn't hear the pa announcements, yet we were sat very close.
Youngsters not allowed to play on the outfield. I'm too old now, though!
Good to chat with Barmier Kev and sozzled friends.
Delicious cake in the Friends of Bath tent.
I was told that a member of this forum had ordered some goods from the Middx charity 'sale' and had rejected them, once receiving the invoice. Name them and shame them I say!
In closing, a top drawer performance from a well-drilled team.

What a result, scheduled finish 6pm and home safe and sund by 3.15pm, excellent!
Good crowd, although hard to tell exact numbers due to entirely plastic seating, no temporary stand at all (helped with costs i suppose!)
Feel sorry for paying spectators who paid £20 for such a short game, not Langers problem though, excellent bowling displat to blame.
Guess the short game will have realy hit the ber and food sellers.
Would like to make a real issue out of the 'security' guys, why on earth at an out ground such as Bath could spectators not be allowed on the outfield, even at the end of the match they werent letting people on the boundary edge, making people single file past back of the rugby stand, wouldnt even let people walk to their seats, ridiculous.
Think the answer may be to play the Bath game more in mid summer but guess little choice with current scheduling of FPT.

Do the security guys have the 'authority' to stop encroachment during non-playing times? We always used to play on the outfield.
I must say that this was the first Bath occasion when I have been less than enthusiastic about the occasion. The facilites are poor, so when it is cold and damp there is no refuge for the spectators.

I've been out and about since my earlier post: I did try and post from my mobile but it didn't want to play.
A few thoughts from me.
Excellent! Made me chuckle, anyway.
I agree with every word of Vic's post. Had I travelled to the game and paid good money for a family day out, the truncated nature of the day would have taken some of the gloss off the victory, for me.
Of course, if it was down to atmospherics and ineptitude then that's just one of those things.
If however this were down to a "result pitch" then I'd still say it'd be a flawed policy, as the result is all but decided at the toss. The side batting second will almost always win, as they know exactly how many risks they can take, or more significantly how few risks they need take.

There were no trouble makers, all people were doing was walking on a vacant piece of grass.

You arent allowed to bring alcohol into the ground, yet you can purchase as much as you like once inside at £3 a pint.
Therefore only logic in not letting you bring it in is so they can fleece you for money once inside.
Particularly for long serving members who may just want a quiet few during the day i see no problem, i guess for big groups of non members trying to bring crates in to get hammered once inside us a different matter.
Maybe a sensible quota of say 2 cans per person or a bottle of wine should be allowed, does that make too much sense perhaps....?

The stewards wouldn’t let me into “The Somerset Stand” to take my photos of the opening. Alain Lockyer said go and stand on the grass at the bottom.
One of the officials spoke to me and asked me to come into the stand; I told him I was not a professional only a Somerset supporter and keen photographer, he said that was OK and you have seen the results.

I see no problems going onto the field after a match is over, but I have a feeling it may be the ECB that is getting more strict on safety grounds, with the ground staff moving around with machinery such as the roller and other such machines.

Never mind the beer sales, the good ladies of Bath were forced to drop the cake price to 50p well recessed, from 80p, so H&S should be informed as waist lines may well suffer.

I must confess i love outgrounds and although todays game was somewhat truncated, i firmly believe that somerset should play 2 one day games away from taunton at both Bath and weston 2 traditional outposts of S.C.C.C for generations!

I agree that the clarence park pitch would need some work but there is still a cricket square in operation but that would obviously need looking after to bring it back up to first class level. But not impossible.
I tend to agree that festival cricket sadly seems to be coming to an end but having spent many happy days at both Weston and Bath i can only hope that they both are not lost to the fixture list forever.

It would be a great shame Chris. Festivals have a peace and quiet all their own. They need to move the date of the Bath one though. This wekend was far too early. Lazy hazy days of summer is festival cricket time.

One obvious response is to remove the absurdly early May Bank Holiday altogether. There may be a case for expressing international solidarity of the workers on May Day, but what is the case for choosing the nearest Monday for people to sit shivering in seaside deck chairs (sometimes within a mere fortnight of the Easter break?
We are short of bank holidays in comparison with our continental cousins. I have long advocated abandoning the early May holiday and having a Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon weekend at the end of June instead. That would be a nice time to play a four-day match at Bath.

The reason the club won't play more games at Bath is lack of imagination and commitment to the supporters.
The easiest thing for the club to do, is to build a stadium in Taunton and concentrate cricket there in the misguided belief it will get on the international circuit.
The fact that Taunton, unlike Bath, or say the Exeter/Devon area is not a tourist destination and is a small insignificant county town seems lost on the club.
They don't realise that we need to take cricket, especially the T20 to the public, to promote the game and the club around the county. Playing T20 before on during the music festival would be a great idea.
Somerset is not an urban county so why act like one? We're no Warwicks for whom is natural to play most games at Edgbaston.
And as has been pointed out, playing at Taunton is doing us no favours in terms of performance.

The club has been in Taunton for 130 years KT - that fact may have passed you by. It's not like they chose Taunton instead of somewhere else in the mid 60's (unless it was the mid 1860's).
They haven't chosen to 'build' a 'stadium' in Taunton. They've chosen to rennovate their traditional home when the opportunity of external funding to help them do it right came along.
Peter Anderson would have loved to move but the members stopped that attempt in the early 90's. He had the international dream. I think the perception has become more realistic since then. Don't get me wrong, they'd take an international if they were offered one (if they ever get the money to exttend the boundary at the OP end) but that certainly is no longer the main aim of the developments.
Have to agree that Somerset is the kind of county that should have a more festival based cricket feel to it. It's big and wide with very few urban centres. It's a pain that Bath supporters are out on such a limb (partly because Bristol can't make it's mind up what it is) but although it is imporant to them it doesn't seem to be important to the city itself.
Richard Gould has said in the past that if the city wants to provide some kind of financial investment in the ffestival then it should be possible to do more. Cheltenham do that with Gloucestershire and that is a lovely event.
As has been pointed out by you Taunton is a weight around the club's neck...what a shame the statistics don't back up the argument and push the festival agenda.
The extra financial investment issue would have much more of an influence. There have been possible changes - Cornish festival, Exmouth Festival, Glastonbury Festival and Bath gets just a nod. Let's hope someone comes in with an idea.
A link to a music festival would be really good rather than smashing up the pitch with Elton strutting his stuff!
