Michael Munday is in for a championship 'must win' fixture at Old Trafford. The conditions are not ideal but his performance at home suggests that while Karthik is not ere he is our best option for spin related wickets and therefore he has been tasked with that work for a second time in a fortnight. With two defeats and a draw already this season...we have to hope the faith is justified.

Commentary NONE
No commentary for this game I'm afraid people although Nathan's live blog is up and running. I'll comment on Day 1 later this afternoon but for now all I can tell you is that Lancashire are presently 35 for 3 with all three wickets to Damien Wright after the home side won the toss and chose to bat.
The side is;
Trescothick, Suppiah, Compton, Hildreth, de Bruyn, Trego, Buttler, Munday, Wright, Thomas, Willoughby
Day 1
We must have felt we had the initiative at 35 for 2 with Moore Horton and Prince back in the dressing room. But I can't really say we held the day although the Lancs supporters seem to think that their boys failed.
The other Lancashire opener stood firm though - some bloke called Luke Sutton! With Chilton he helped turn things around and stabalise the innings. When he went at 131 we had another little flurry until Sajid Mahmoud!!! How the hell did we allow him to get 64?
Sutton passed 100 before we got rid of all of them and it took us all day. Finally out for 292 in 85 overs with Wright taking an excellent 5 for 81 and Alf taking 3 but for over twice as many runs.
Tight bowling overall (Munday only bowled 4 - not a day for the spinner) with the main four pace men well under 4 (Trigger, Alf, Willow and Wrighty)
We faced a small number of overs (7) and lost Suppiah to Hogg for 10. 14 for 1 - hope for good stuff tomorrow because I'm not personally sure we actually won today - I think we let them off the hook unless we murder them on Day 2.
Day 2
We have a go in the muddy light of the second day and end the day on 155 for 4. No real contribution from Arul and Nick but a 50 from the boss and some solid batwork from Zander. We are left with Hildreth(13) and Buttler (18) who need to push on to make a game out of this.
Day 3
Becomes the Trego and Hildreth show as Marcus gives his guys leave to go for it and they provide for their skipper. Jos goes early but Pete doesn't! He hits an 88 ball 103 while James does not freeze and helps his mate to that while going 1 ball short of his own three figure score. Together they move the score on to 367 for 7 in moderately quick time and some additions from Wright give us a final first innings total of 383 and a glimpse of a possible defeat if we can get them out and leave enough time to get something from this one.
Lancs manage 32 before the end of the day so the last one still has something in it - has the weather stopped us getting something? Dark and dismal evenings mean 'bad light' may have 'stopped victory'.
Day 4
Sutton did not make a second hundred and is an early victim to Thomas clean bowled. Then comes a bt of a flurry as the same man gets Horton Moore and the dangerous Prince between 94 and 100. It is 'game on' and Lancashire are worried.
Mike Munday is introduced and has Chilton caught by his captain at 126..... little frisson of hope for us which is sadly squashed by Croft and Hogg who hold it together and although Hogg goes for 6 at 145, Chapple adds 30 and Croft keeps his wicket for 60 plus and the light brings the game to a halt early as another draw.
We take 10 but we must have had hopes of more. Another non win and despite a better performance (and the better of the four days) the end result is another game gone and no real pressure from us on those leading the CC.
Hmmmm..... Will Karthik be arriving to keep us in the top flight? Well there are those who have begun to wonder if this unit can bowl a side out twice and win games. Well he's here in a week and will debut in the one dayer against Sussex and then his four day start against Yorkshire at home 2 days later.

As a wrist-spinner myself (and without having seen our team selection) I would like to enter a plea of mitigation for MKM in advance of today's play, should anything go wrong.
The plea is this; It is particularly difficult to bowl wrist-spin accurately in very cold conditions (which will surely prevail today.) I think the reason why this is so is that the rotation of the shoulder which wrist-spiners need to produce is not a natural thing for the body to want to do. When the body is cold, it becomes really rather stubborn about such things and half-trackers and such like come out all the more often.
That said, hopefully, a helpful pitch and the success that he had against Essex will keep his tail up and he will prosper again.

Sadly, LoL, I believe Radio Lancs is one of those that traditionally does not bother with home CC commentary.
Given that they have stared well in the CC, but only averagely in one-day competitions, one would think that the CC games would be something that their fans would like to listen to. But it is not mine to wonder why.

Oh, boo - you are right, FE. He is listed. I saw something on the Radio Lancs website where Moores said he needed to rest - perhaps that was out of date and referenced yesterday's game.

In answer to your question, LoL, I fear that playing Luke Sutton at the top of the order is a very sensible thing to do. As well all know, he is a tremendously gritty customer and may be a thorn in our side, all day long.

If the inclement weather stays away for most of the four days, then I suspect that is first hour after lunch will be absolutely pivotal, in deciding which side wins this game.
Old Trafford is usually a 250-275 sort of track.

I'd give some thought to giving Zander De Bruyn a short bowl. He managed to pick up 3 wickets, out of 6 that fell, in the second innings up there last year. Might be worth a quick whirl?

They are obviously going to end up with a pretty good total for Old Trafford, meaning that we would need to bat out of our skins to have a good chance of winning this, especially given a dodgy forecast.

lack of fire power is why we wont win the Championship. It was a plain to me last winter but Rose chose to do nothing about it.
Means a long strggle Im afraid. I dont buy this Kartik will win us the title bullthat Rose was spouting in the winter. If we lose this game (which we could), then lose next week (which is feasible) then our chances are basically gone by the time he gets here, if you factor in the weather etc.

It certainly looks there is no realistic chance of competing for a title.
I think the consensus pre-season prediction here was 'mid-table,' and it's certainly looking like that will be the realistic maximum that we can achieve this season.
Kartik is not really the type of bowler to consistently run through sides. He's consistent, crafty and frugal and he should make the rest of our attack more effective, through his frugality and cleverness.
Having said that, I doubt if Damien Wright has gone for much more than two an over in these four CC games that he has played for us?

You`re so right and we will pay the price. Not very hopeful at all especially as we`re losing wright soon too. This match has echoes of Headingley in their first innings. We just can`t finish things off.142-5/175-7.

I think I'm going to look for a website where there are fewer doom-mongers around. Here we are in only the fourth match of the season, during the first innings of which we were held up by one serious stand (in which a former Somerset player had a major role), having indeed lost two matches, but had the better of a third, and the pessimists are saying the season is already over and looking for people to blame.
Lighten up, for goodness sake. It's only a game - and we're not quite the worst at it in the world.

To be honest, FE, I doubt that the fact that they chose to bat is of much significance at least in the sense that I doubt it means that they viewed this track as being an easy one on which to bat, if that is what you are implying?
For one thing, EVERY team that won the toss at Old Trafford last season chose to bat! The highest first innings total resulting from such a decision last yr was the 286 they made against us.
I suspect that teams choose to bat here in the expectation of significant turn later in games.

It depends on how well we put the bat to ball tomorrow.
We are not going to win games with bowling performances. If the bowlers can keep first innings opponents under 300 then they have done their job. It is up to the batsmen to make a game of these by scoring big in their first stand at the crease and then asking the bowlers to do it again before finishing the game in the fourth.
We don't have the attack to kill a side but we do have the batsmen to beat them up.....if it fires enough.

I suppose a batting line up is only strong when it fires. At present ours isnt and certainly at the moment its a myth that its the strongest in the country. I think Yorkshires is stronger and also Notts and there are probably others on a par. Time to fire today I think!!.

What is happening so far this season?
Most teams are struggling to get past three hundred runs, it can't be anything to do with not using the heavy roller because they are struggling on the early days of the match.

If anyone ever suggested to me that I surf a fans' message board for motivation, I think I would probably, from that moment onwards, consider moving County to a County where the management had rather more sensible ideas (!).
There is often a debate to be had in sports - although it is more usually aired in football - about whether it is the job of the fans to lift the players or vice-a-versa. It would certainly be very, very nice to be lifted this morning.

Mike I think its because batsmen are dominating we're having such intriguing well balanced contests.
The first two games were disappointing in terms of their outcome but great games of cricket with a great balance between bat and ball.
It may be April, it may be the lack of the heavy roller but it's encouraging for four day cricket.
Of course what we need to do is win' we're not sub par but lacking the edge when it comes to top order batting, wicket taking and holding catches.

Apparently, after day one, Damien Wright was confident that this was a result pitch so, if we can get a good lead, this could be the duck-breaker for us.

Thanks for that nugget, Bo. I have to say, I had guessed as much. Pete seems to have been comfortably our most consistent batsman so far this season. By consistent, I mean absence of failures. He must be a fairly close second to Banger in total runs scored now.
I still want him to be given more of a role with the ball and I still think that we have to look at the fact that SCCC do not give him as much bowling as they might as one reason holding Pete back from England selection, though I certainly do not expect you to comment on that.
Great to see Hildreth really firing when we really need him to, as well.

Right. Last year they made 276, then we made 343 and their second dig was 180 or so for 6 and that was all the cricket that the weather made time for.
If we could get the first six wickets for 180 in their second innings here, that would do nicely.
It sounds from Nathan's blog as though the ball is still flying through with plenty of pace and bounce. He also mentioned the odd ball bouncing and turning for Kerrigan, their SLA bowler.

Typical Manc weather! From afar it looks like a really strong performance, and still got an outside chance of a win if we can roll through the lower order quickly.
P.S. Brilliant to see Jeremy Browne extend his lead in Taunton - he's a massive SCCC fan (and a very hard working etc etc!).

Well my old school friend who has just become an MP with a majority of 347 is slightly right of Hitler so even Jeremy has his plus points....at least he isn't wearing a blue rosette.

It is clear that we have significantly improved from match to match in the CC this year; by the end of this season we'll be unstoppable, unless some old pessmist like BJ succeeds in demoralising the lot of us, including the team.

347 is a bit marginal, although of course there were more closer contests.

I was recently at a B & B in Teignmouth and our landlady was helping to organise the local Lib Dem campaign. Sadly, this campaign did not succeed and the Tories took the seat of Newton Abbott by a margin that sounds similar to the one that Grockle describes.
On the other hand, I rather thought that Grockle was from Yorkshire? In which case, I'm at completely the wrong end of the country.
