Another day and another important match in a season full of them. Hampshire will see a lot of us this week as we as all here together for this Championship tussle before we all move down to the Rosebowl for the T20 Finals day on Saturday. Will we be sick of them by Thursday or ready to compound the sense of defeat they have after a four day thrashing with another one should we meet in the Final?
Dark and close day with lots of moisture in it. We welcome Hampshire, win the toss and put them in. We then drop two catches (Jos Buttler!!!!!! and Peter Trego the culprits) and at 2:00 I report that Hampshire are 111 for 1 having lost Adams before lunch to a good delivery from Trigger that nicked through to the keeper.
Craig seems to be suffering from hamstring niggles which meant Jos kept for half an hour this morning while he had some treatment but it doesn't seem to be enough of a problem for him to give the gloves over to the young man for the whole innings. It's a fairly decent home crowd given the weather conditions and once again we are using what seem tohave become the "Championship" strips over to the left side of the ground with sight screens at the Gimblett edge of the Old Pavilion and half the Botham Stand out of commission.
Alf and Charl shared the majority of the first session bowling with some cameos from Pete. After lunch we are straight in with Kartik (topping the bowling averages this morning with his wickets coming at just over 13 a pop) and Ben. Mike Carberry has once again brought his boots to fill at our expense and passed 50 just before they passed 100. He has been joined by Lumb.
The decision to field first is already in the discussion stage and the pitch may, once again for a Hampshire match, not be the right one for a competitive match resulting in victory with maximum bonus points. But it is early days. As I type hope is once more kindled in the breast as Kartik changes ends and has the self same Carberry fishing at one and getting an edge to the keeper. 130 for 2 and McKenzie borrows the boots as he strides out to the crease. Phillips and Trigger are now operating from Kartik's usual end and he is wheeling in from the Old Pavilion instead.
Somebody in the box suggests that yo know when things aren't going to plan when you hear;
"To bowl from the River end....Zander de Bruyn"
and that is the next significant event. Hampshire may have been assessed as lucky to reach 60 without loss this morning but there is little to worry the partnership this afternoon.
150 goes past before the 50th over and the feeling that this is going to be a long and hard day for players who are coming off the back of a CB40 match just down the road yesterday (admitedly it would have been the same whoever fielded seeing as Hampshire entertained Durham yesterday down on the South Coast). This game is begging for someone to take it by the scruff and give it a good shake but there are no indications that a Somerset player is in the position to do that and it is too early for the visitors to have the inclination.
However you can't keep a Murali down and he keeps turning and coming in. He returns to the River end and eventually has Lumb misreading the speed of a ball which comes too slowly so the batsmen is through the shot before the ball arrives and he simply pops the ball back to the bowler and walks off looking quizzically at the bottom of his bat. 180 for 3 and a dangerman is gone. Still one (ex-Somerset) there though and we'd like to see the back of him before Tea - preferably on Day 1!!

Hants have discovered their form now so it should be a good battle. We are the only one of the top 3 playing I think so a win is vital. I see we have put them in so I would settle for 300 all out at close (or preferably 299)
Re: This talk about the team being tired at the moment; I guess that's the price we pay for not really having a squad in any meaningful sense of the term, as distinct from a first XI. Pretty much the same group of guys have been gettting sent out there every week and maybe it's starting to take a bit of a toll?
I would say that probably a fair assessment AG. Which is why we need newer bowlers for next year. All our main bowlers will have a minimum age of 34 next year and counting.
I just hopwe we dont run out of steam and end uip wi nowt ala last year.
Maybe Pollard, Turner and Max if he gets the chance can provide the spark on Saturday though.
Though I'm not there and haven't a clue on what the conditions nor pitch look like, I was a little surprised at Tres' decision to bowl as Hants' strong suit certainly appears to be their batting - their top four are all now in good nick, while their bowling attack, Cork apart, seems young and inexperienced.
The weather forecast may be key (!) in that Tres is thinking a day or so may be lost, and he'd rather chase on the last day than have to bowl a side out...just a theory?
I agree, SP, that Hants' batting line-up has found good form recently.
Perhaps somebody that is there could comment on whether, or not, it looks like we could have done with one of the young wrist spinners out there?
I'm not sure that tomorrow's forecast is that terrible?
The Met Office one I saw suggested that the worst of the weather would be overnight and then things would improve during the day? Of course, if wind speeds prove to be slower than expected then that could be wrong and we could lose Day Two.
From the commentary, it sounds as though there is help available out there - at least for the seamers - but it sounds as though consistent accuracy has been lacking.
I have read this and don't really see any areas of criticsm to speak of. The odd comment questioning things and decisions but nothing untoward.
Are we not allowed to discuss things without glib comments from other posters? Personally I thought that this was one of the purposes of the site. I enjoy debating the game and am always 100% behind the team..tired or not!!!!
It's because there's little else to really get the negative teeth into at the moment.
Something has to be wrong and if it isn't on the pitch it must be in the observation of what is on the pitch or the observation of the obervation of what is on the pitch - at least I think that is the logic.

I think with SP that we are always better chasing so I understand Marcus' decision. I said just after 11,00 that I would settle for 300 all out and I have no reason 6 hours later to think that this is well acheivable.
At the time of typing, I am hoping for a slightly better outcome than them getting 300. We have them becalmed at the minute and I am actually hoping that we might get them for not much more than 260 or so.
There were two occasions when the umpires walked off for rain which to me seemed totally unacceptable. Before lunch there were scarcely more than a few spots in the air. OK we did not lose any time as lunch was taken early, but the stoppage was unnecessary. Then immediately after tea, again just a few spots. Iknow it got heavier later but they weren't to know that when they walked off.
Surely the paying customers are entitled to more consideration than this.
Thanks, Mike. We really must be watering these wickets heavily? By rights, they should be brownish white after all the dry weather yet here is another lush track!
I haven’t spoken to Phil for a while, in any case he doesn’t see it first hand, the only thing he can see is my photos and TV.
Green wickets won’t be anything new to him because when he was asked to prepare green pitches he did so.
There are a few things I have noticed happening more during the matches this year but I won’t go into details because I am not going to say anything against the remaining groundsman.
I am sure that Phil's comments on pitch preparation this season, would be of much interest to us all, Grizzzly.
However, what would be of equal interest, are the thoughts of the Club's members and paying public who have witnessed at first hand the way that the various pitches have played this season, in comparison with the past three or four.
As well as that it would be interesting to get their views on the quality of cricket the players have produced on the pitches which has also been of a different type.
Absolutely right, Grockle - yesterday's scorecard shows that a very green pitch doesn't automatically mean scores of 150-200 per innings (and vice versa!).
Edit: PS Pouring with rain in Berkshire this morning - how is TA1?
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2010:08:10:07:40:11 by SheptonPaul.
Reference above comments -
1. Weather in TA1 this morning 'p--s pour'.
2. Wicket condition through each 4 day match - NO HEAVY ROLLER - believe me it IS the most telling aspect relating to ALL county wickets.
OLDBOYBA!
Grockle As well as that it would be interesting to get their views on the quality of cricket the players have produced on the pitches which has also been of a different type.
Soooooo many variables in this game aren't there?
Well, we've heard it from the horse's mouth, folks.
Unfortunately, the forecast for today at the Met Office is much worse, now, than today's forecast was when it was published yesterday.
With that, added to the reports that the current weather in TA1 is urine poor, then I'd say we can probably forget about most or all of today's play which means this game is all but certain to be a draw. Pardoxically, this is probably more likely to be the case because of a very good forecast for days three and four i.e. there might be more chance of a result if the forecast for days three and four was dry but with low cloud and stifling humidity. As it is the forecast for days three and four seems to be mainly sunshine.
The thing that really strikes (and to a certain extent confounds) me is the startling difference in performance that we've seen from Kartik playing vs Div One batsmen for Somerset compared to his (apparent) performance, as judged by his record, bowling against Division Two batsmen for Middx.
Bascially, although it remains early days, he is averaging half the number of runs per wicket for SCCC as he did for Middlesex, despite playing versus better batsmen here.
I can only assume that he must have been thoroughly de-motivated at Middx? It's hardly as though our Taunton pitches play like those at Galle, is it?
Having said that, the Middx fans that come to this board seemed to rate Kartik very highly anyway?
If I was a Middx fan then in amongst my frustrations with their season in general, the main question in my mind would be 'Why on earth did we not get these consistently brilliant performances out of Kartik?'
My views on comparing this year with the previous three years, it can’t be done.
1. Up until now we have had the driest summer for eighty years.
2. We haven’t had Kartik for the last four year, so we can’t compares the pitches for spin.
3. We haven’t had Phillips fit like this year for the previous three years.
4. Thomas has been improving each year I have watch him.
5. The heavy roller is not now being used this year and all counties are saying it has had a big impact on the games.
6. I believe this year the bowling most of the time (not always) have been more accurate.
7. The fielding has been better this year (not that it is bad very often) other years.
8. We have a different captain this year that does things differently (bowling changes, field placing, a happier team I thing under Marcus and Thomas.
I would like somebody to go though all match scores for last years and see if there is a difference in the country with this years matches, how many teams have managed to score 400 in the first inning last year compared with this year, I don’t know the answer I may be completely wrong on what I think the result will be.
I am sure there are other reasons why you can’t compare this year with previous years.
Back to today’s match will there be play before lunch maybe not it is still drizzling as I write.
My impression, MIke, is that scores have generally been lower around the country, this year. That may well be due to the absence of the heavy roller.
I think you are absolutely right that sensible comparisons are all but entirely invalid given the extraordinary weather, the addition of a world-class spinner and the ban on the heavy roller.
Moreover, the change in the playing conditions (fewer points awarded for a draw) may also have affected matters, too.
If not for the changes in the playing conditions and the abnormal weather, then we might have attempted some kind of comparison of the figures of our remaining seamers and/or the performances of opposition bowlers.
They are my views, what I don’t like is when some people criticize others views and even go as far as to speak for others when they can speak for themselves.
That's a pretty good summation Mike - and one I wholly agree with.
The weather isn't likely to allow much play today I fear. I suspect I shall be seeing more fireworks than you guys as we are of to Plymouth to see the International Fireworks Competition!
There are two team that play at Taunton and I haven’t seen the visiting team running through our batting line up with their fast & slow bowlers, the pitch works for both teams not just Somerset.
Maybe we should refer back to it when the discussions about result X or result Y being the one that occurs so poeple can keep all those aspects in mind.
I think there is a 9th we ought to add.
9)The groundstaff seem to have been asked to operate some different policies in relation to the pitch.
The club has been working on different things in relation to the playing surface over 5 years that I know of.
It's like a recipe and maybe some of the "ingredients", added to the other 8 influencing factors you've outlined have finally gven the bowlers something more to work with (or the same stuff for a little longer which seem to be more the influence I think I've seen)
As"the horses mouth" (strange reference for a self confessed non-expert) said "there are soooooo many variables".
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2010:08:10:12:54:53 by Grockle.
Mike, for how long were we asking for them to stop using the heavy roller?
Ridiculous it took them so long to implement it.
If anybody can get a message to LoL,if he's at the game, can you please tell him I am struggling badly and haven't a clue where I'll be this week.
I haven't left you all, much to the dismay of some and am following events closely.
I simply have a few logistical problems.
It's a bit more than a broken pc I'm afraid, and for a while I may have a deal of difficulty keeping in touch.
But fear not,I am not leaving you all.
As for the roller issue,it really is one that winds me up and one which I know Phil will be quite angry about.
It must be 3 years at least,Mike, that some of us,groundsmen included, have been asking the authorities to stop the practice of squeezing the life out of the wicket during the course of the game.
That it came this season must have been like birthday and Christmas "rolled" into one for Mr Rose and the management at the club.
They were very lucky.
Unless of course they knew what the effects of this would mean.
Easy to lay the blame on Phil's doormat when he's struggling with non-sensical rules and regulations.
I think that M A Carberry is probably worth a go. We - surely to goodness - should be looking to take three specialist openers with us Down Under, as opposed to "hoping," that a makeshift one like Trott or Bell could do the job in extremis?
Therefore, even if one takes the view that Cook should remain first-choice for the Ashes, it would be very, very useful to have a look at Carberry for a couple of Tests, IMO.
Hildreth cannot be the replacement unless they are intending to make Trott open?
It would, surely, be totally unrealistic to ask James to go out and open the batting in a Test match! The guy was probably in his teens, the last time he opened the batting in any form of cricket!
play was going to start at 4, but they've had a bit more rain.
Frustrating because in TA3 it's been dry for the last 4 hours, and there's even a bit of sun.
TRES gone early. I do wish he wasn't exposed to new ball, and came later at middle order to really hammer things home. Buttler and Suppiah openers for me.
OLDBOYBA!
Just got home, a tricky seven overs to face Trescothick dismissal sound like a bat pad job, the ball looped up in the air and wouldn’t come down quick enough.
I have a few photos for later.
There was a decent few in the ground earlier in the day considering the weather they got less after the last delay. Tractor was there and somebody called Grockle and me.
Jim I passed your message on to LoL.
I had a look at the Long Room, not for me I will stick to the Gimblett Hill.
Now you see. if you had linked through the page at the top of this thread to thd internet ball by ball you would have got all the info you needed from John and I from 5 until 6:40 :-)
Shame about MT - misread a slow one and popped it high for Tomlinson to dash around for.
I suppose realisitically the best we can hope for is an 11 pt draw. IF we bat to 400 that will take all day at least and put us 120 ahead. If we could demolish them in 40 overs tomorrow we could just about win the chase but realistically they will bat too much of tomorrow to make it possible. The important thing is to bat all day today.
Lets just get a lead and see what happens, speaking to certain people they dont think its the greatest deck they have seen at Taunton.
So a 100 run lead maybe very interesting going into the last day.
My cash is on a Somerset win late tomorrow evening!!!
I think we need to aim to bat until lunch tomorrow, though I fear that batting may not be a facile task, in spite of today's improved weather.
If we are able to bat until lunch tomorrow, I think there's every chance of Kartik and co bundling Hants out in two sessions.
I thought from the fact that Hants were all out for only 284, despite us dropping at least two chances might suggest that batting has not been terribly easy and Bo's comments appear to support that.
Of course, IF Hants share that view of the track, then it's not impossible that we could even declare behind and be left a run-chase i..e if they think the track is the opposite of flat they might be prepared to back their bowlers? I certainly would not put money on it, though.
one thing to add on Hants batting yesterday, they did seem to be going for their shots it almost looked like they were trying to make up for the time lost.
If we bat until lunch tomorrow, which is around 130 overs that would put us hopefully around 450/500 with the short boundary which is far to long a time to bat.
If that happens then i would reckon the wicket would have flattened by the time Hampshire get in and it will end in a draw like the Kent game.
Forget the odd bonus point now and go for the bloody win. 350/375 pull out and get into them and hope they fold under a bit of pressure.
Its time to put our foot on the gas and look to win this title rather than pussyfoot around picking up a draw here and there.
To be honest, whilst I would be inclined to try to bat until lunch tomorrow, or just before, I think we'd find it difficult to do so as it's probably not one of our flatter tracks.
So the scenario that Bo outlines is probably something that is more likely to happen, whether it is Marcus's intention or not, IMO.
I imagine it will depend upon how well set our batters are as we approach 300-odd. If we have some of our more aggressive players at the crease and 400 is obtainable in short order, then we should aim for an explosive hour's batting to get to 400 as quickly as possible before declaring.
We may as well talk tactics of if we score more than them - if not it's very simple, score as many as possible, then bowl them out as quick as possible!
I would guess, Wickham, that someone (Marcus? AH?) might just have played a hunch. Craig scored very well in both innings of the game at Southampton last season (against these same opponents) in what was a game that would probably, otherwise, have been lost. They may have wanted to get Craig in in a situation that he may feel confident in, to try and recover something like his best form?
Of course, it could have been that James was on the khazi!
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2010:08:11:13:52:56 by AGod.
In my experience, in any sphere of life the c..k-up theory (which I think encompasses your second alternative) applies much more often than the conspiracy theory.
Somerset 136/4, Tomlinson 4/32
What is it with this young man Tomlinson? How can someone who on his career record is only barely a decent county bowler (first-class average 36.7), have a special partiality for bowling, at Taunton, against Somerset's batting line-up??
I'm pretty sure that Charl has a better record bowling for SCCC at Taunton than he does bowling for SCCC at other grounds. And I'd guess that's unusual for an SCCC bowler in recent years.
Perhaps there is something about Taunton that makes it particularly amenable for that particular form of bowling?
Pretty herculean effort by Tomlinson in this game so far, though.
I doubt batting Craig before James has anything to do with helping Craig's confidence......I suspect Craig would have been told to go and score aggressively and quickly to get to the magic 400 as quickly as possible and perhaps the powers that be believe he could do it quicker than James. It might be better for Craig's confidence to get a high score slowly rather than having the pressure of being the quick scorer all the time. But this game is not about Craig's confidence it is about employing the best tactics to try to get a win, so as tactics go it was probably a good gamble.
Absolutely BO, get after it now and get them in tonight. Why give them the possibility of setting a target. Let's boss the situation. We're title contenders not them. Anyone have any idea of the statistics of James and Zander together ? I have a feeling they've done well. They certainly are now!
I imagine it will depend upon how well set our batters are as we approach 300-odd. If we have some of our more aggressive players at the crease and 400 is obtainable in short order, then we should aim for an explosive hour's batting to get to 400 as quickly as possible before declaring.
I think we're now at the stage where we go for the explosive hour!
Of course, the best way to avoid them the possibility of setting a target is to be so far past them (and quickly) that they can't get ahead at all...but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
To date: 155 off 38 overs, 4 per over - and out! Grrr...
Can we strike a special medal for ZdeB for always beingthere as an unsung hero-and what a pity he missed his ton.
Now, 23 overs left so do try to go at 4 an over till the close,go quicker for shorter and try to get them in or as BO said whatever happens now it's game one.
I want the 400 runs, personally. Assuming that we avoid a dreaded collapse, then I doubt that Zander getting out will be that bad of a thing as his being replaced by Buttler (and, in due course, Trego) is unlikely to be detrimental to our prospects of scoring runs rapidly.
Sounded like a very accomplished innnings by Zander though.
Oh my . The emperor re-born. Well played ,sir, as my grandpa used to say.
By the way ( and this is just in passing...) Lancs grinding to a halt, nine down ,a fourfer for a certain IDB, looking wonderfully stout on the cricinfo match page. Diet what diet !!
Hope I don't put the kiss of death on him, but his performances this year have been fantastic & you get the feeling he has come of age big time.
As one who made comments at the start of the season about James being in the 'last chance saloon', I am very happy to eat copious quantities of humble pie !
Interesting to see his first class average this year is now over 70. I was also a bit surprised to see his career average at 42.78 exceeds that of one Marcus Trescothick at 40.51. (Marcus has though scored the small matter of approaching 11,000 more runs !).
Looks like the foot is now being put on the gas, there is now only one team that can win this and with a lead of 150+ by 1130 tomorrow morning i can see the boys knocking them over and giving us max points!!!
Well batted James and a good knock from Trig.Worst of both worlds now in that having got to 392 we might as well bat tomorrow for 400 but we shall lose the 2 overs between innings. So what bat for 6 overs, try to get to 430 then 88 overs to bowl with us 146 ahead. A draw still the best bet but a great effort in a 3 day game
Can't really understand why didn't really go for the 400 tonight. Sincerely hope we don't bat on after 400 tomorrow morning. Why score at 3 runs an over tomorrow first up, when we may need to score at 10 runs an over after tea?
Game on guys dont worry about that, when you are batting out the game and the only poisitive result is a draw it can be very tough.
I reckon 25 mins batting tomorrow lead like i said before of 150 and then let Kartik work his magic.
May well be chasing 100ish in the last hour or so.
I am optimistic!!!
My guess is a slog for 20/25 mins unless we get to 9 down after 400. Get another 60 and with a lead of 170, hopefully not too many to get second time if we can bowl them out.
OLDBOYBA!
Think we'll bat (quickly) as long as we survive, clet putting Charl in but Hildy, Ben and Murali should smack what they can whilst they are in.
108 lead now so it up to 180+ by 12 that gives us hour before lunch and chance to keep seamers fresh, with Kartik on by 10th overor rest of the day, rotating quicks at the other end. Should give uf 70ish overs to bowl them out and a spare 12-14 at the end to smack the 80-100 or so we may need, easy.....
I don’t agree that we bat on pasted 400; declare at 400 to give us as much time as possible to get them out.
If we have to bat again so be it, our first aim is to get them out if we bat on and they are nine down at the end people will say we should have declared earlier.
We can’t lose, that is why Hampshire tried their hardest to stop us getting to 400 today, they didn’t want us declaring over night.
I don’t think Tomlinson getting down on one knee will get the umpire to change his mind after he turned down the lbw appeal against Thomas.
A Thomas wasn’t bothered by short ball bowled at him this one from Cork.
Cork was injured fielding and then couldn’t complete an over bowler. Lumb & Vince were also down on the ground fielding but they got up and carried on.
Jos Buttler sweeping.
James Hildreth also sweeping, green must be the in colour this year it is everywhere.
Peter Trego deserves a bit of luck an inside edge going to the boundary.
I agree declare at 400 but just get impression we will bat longer.
A number of times in the last 4 overs we blocked or left balls, if the absolute plan was to declare at 400 i'd have thought we'd have thrown everything at getting them tonight to help save the 2 overs for change of innings.
Ben didnt play a shot in the last over with 8 needed for the 400.
Whatever happens it needs to be quick, any dot balls in the morning are wasting bowling time
Ben Phillips faced 7 out of the last 13 balls, Hampshire managed to keep him to face the last over and Ben was trying not to lose his wicket, maybe it may have been different if Hildreth had managed to get up the other end and face the last over.
Not if Cork and Ervine are struggling with bad backs!!
On my way down for the afternoon session, hopefully they will be 2/3 down at lunch and wrap it up an hour before close!!
If we struggle to get last few wickets and overs run out, the silly waste of a few to Kartik and Willoughby might prove to have been just that - once Hildreth had gone, IMO it should have 400 and declare.
old boy!
End of the 40th and Hamshire are 12 ahead and i personally think that this game is done and dusted and will be wending my merry way home in abut half an hour to do something else with my day. Well fought game but destroyed by a day of rain at a crucial part of the match.
Is this going to be the story of another year. Close but not enough clear days to make an impression in those important matches?
NOW I'm going home in the hope that it will galvanise something and by the time I get there we will have bowled them out and knocked off the 35 odd we need.
Yeah, looks like the loss of 3 full sessions to the rain has killed us in this one. It may be tough to win the CC from here now - although Notts and Yorks must play one another again.
I'm a bit curious about Big Ben. When a guy pulls up it normally indicates some fairly major injury... but if that's the case they do not then, usually, come out to field as normal.
Somebody please tell me it was August today and not November. players asking for jumpers and I have never seen so many players and umpires heading for the toilet between overs before.
Im sorry we didn't win yesterday but we are still there though. Notts look good too though and it will be tough to win never mind all three.
I see Richard Gould has carried out an interview on BBC which says we are looking to strengthen. I am personally quite pleased with this. Anyone listen to the interview? Would be interested to what he said, as I cant access from here.
Unless he was referring to the need to strengthen the structure of the Old Pavilion, one would assume that he was intimating that Somerset would be on the look - out to recruit new players.
Therein lies the hope and belief that such addition(s) would be better than than those whom we have already have.
That hasn't always been the case, has it?
What a tragedy it is that for many years, the club has seemingly been unable to develop any young bowlers.
Enjoy the day tomorrow all who are going. I'll be watching on TV cheering the lads on. Notts look strong on paper but so are we and am banking on Tres and Pollard destruction tomorrow.
I'll be down for the Durham game though so maybe see some of you then.
Well I suppose they could have been talking about the finance of the hotel development that is planned to replace the OP and move the boundary back to international standard sizes at that end.
But it is that time for discussions between players ending contracts and counties. James H has been approached and I believe has rejected those approaches. I do hope the Khan approach has not gone further though - don't rate him personally. Maybe we've talked to Tomlinson after his two career bests at HQ
The speculation about ZdB seems groundless however as I checked with a number of people and they were unanimous in their belief that he extended his contract along with Alf and has at least another year to run on it.
I have just enjoyed another four days at Taunton, save that the equivalent of a whole day was lost to the weather. Other have commented better than I can on the cricket and I will only say that Wednesday was by far the most entertaining (and the warmest day), with The Emperor scoring what has by now become his statutory century. There were rumours that Whittaker was at the ground; I trust he noted the brilliance and authority with which JH now regularly bats.
I was very disappointed that BJ could not get to the match, as I was so greatly looking forward to an exchange of abuse. I trust he will be able to get to the next home match, as I intend to do. I also noted that Bristol Rob was not there and hope that he is not unwell.
In the pub afterwards a man was asking Tractor who that Loyal of Lhasa is; I said that in my opinion he is no more than a boring and pedantic old frat and is probably actually only 17 but pretends he knows everything. That's just an opinion, of course.
At the entrance to St James Street there is a sign that says "22 Rifles for 39 Pounds". That sounds like a real bargain and 22 seems a suitable number to take to a match if you really would like to rid the world of both teams, although I think one rifle at £1.77, fitted with 22 bullets, would probably be equally effective. As it happens, I saw no reason to eliminate any player on either side; the Hampshire players who fielded on the boundary (including Tomlinson and Christian) seemed particularly nice blokes.
I would not be surprised if we end up signing a Kolpak pace bowler to strengthen us for the 2011 season. After all domestic alternatives are not exactly bountiful.
I have to assume that there is nobody as authoritative as you on the subject of your third paragraph, LoL,
I've always felt that you could gain real insights into the personalities of boundary fielders. In his very early days at Taunton we took a real liking to Steffan Jones when he was fielding on the mid-wicket boundary.
The Indian player, Navjot Sidhu, was very pleasant and chatty to us, but very much stood on his dignity when spoken to with what he considered less than deserved respect by a group of teenage girls of South Asian origin. And quite right too.
Although there have obviously been exceptions it is lovely that the great majority of cricketers over the years have seemed very pleasant people. I have seen far less cricket in recent years; I hope this is still the case.
Incidentally, contrary to his pantomime villain image Andre Nel was very chatty and friendly when fielding on the Third Man boundary at Northampton on one occasion.
