One of the good things about the run in in the CC! is that the main protagonists of the championship meet each other in the last few games of the season. Our opponents are Lancashire - the providers of such a generous declaration to Nottinghamshire a few days ago and with the Outlaws losing their game in hand the irons are really in the fire. Will the weather give us a chance?
v Lancashire CC1 @ Taunton Tuesday 7 September 2010
Not expecting very much play on the first day, I have to say I was surprised to arrive at the ground at 4:00 on Day 1 and NOT see the covers on everywhere and no play to have taken place. That of course was not the case and we had won the toss and put Lancashire in.
The Somerset side named 12 players because this was the second game of the season where Craig started 2 games at the same time. While he was opening for England in the T20, his 'twin' Chris Jones was making his first class debut as part of the side at Taunton. As we didn't bat, Chris fielded for the first day and then made way for his team mate to continue the game after his innings in Wales.
Except for a slight break for rain just before tea, the first day story was on tail-end partnerships after Charl Willoughby, working in tandem with the LBW rule had reduced the Red Rose to a score well under 200. Removing Smith Horton and Chilton before the visitors had reached 3 figures was good (one wicket to Thomas 2 to CW) but although Chanderpaul and Croft held up the constant fall of wickets, we reduced them to 169 for 8 and were looking to bat for the whole of the session after Tea before Mahmoud came in and hit a quick fire 29 off 30 balls and then Kerrigan and Keedy frustrated us past the 80th over, only expiring after the new ball was taken and Ben Phillips bowled a striaght one! After a record 57 run partnership for the last wicket, we were looking to get 260 for a first innings lead and had to face 12 (eventually it was 13) overs before the end of the first day.
We nearly did it as well! But as has happened more than once this season, we lost a wicket just before the close - a settled looking Marcus Trescothick misreading a Keedy slow ball and pooping the ball up to the midwicket fielder for 33. The last 3 overs for Alfonso Thomas to navigate with Arul were duly navigated and it found us with 54 on the scoreboard at the end of Day 1
Day 2
A Big batting day in store for us after hearing the news that Notts would start Day 2 of their game all out for 59 and over 200 runs behind Yorkshire. It didn't get off to the greatest of starts with Arul gone without adding to his overnight score. Nick Compton came to the crease and settled in for a long haul while his Vice Captain then spent the next 45 minutes trying to get out but failing!!
He did finally manage it at 71 and Hildreth came to the wicket to play the reverse role to his game against Glamorgan on Saturday. Here it was hoped that he would kick on while Nick would rotate the strike. That started to happen before Hilda became another LBW victim on this 'terror track' and when Compton once more failed just one run short of a half ton at 160, we were in danger of NOT getting a first innings lead. The opportunity of watching Procter bowling to Compton had not really garnered anything spectacular.
But our 'exploring officer' Craig Kieswetter was back and in some form with a lot of the pressure off him. He had been joined by Trego who was still making his case for being an innings builder and together they started to create a very vital partnership against bowling that did seem quite innocuous at times. Keedy was bowling unchanged from the River while Mahmoud and Procter was not looking dangerous at all from the OP. The 100 partnership arrived as we passed the Lanky first innings total and by this time CK had passed 50 off 50 balls and then Pete also reached the milestone off 66 before he decided to push things along as Kerrigan was brought into the attack.
It worked for a while but at 271 he simply missed a straight insipid one and became another LBW victim for Gary Keedy. Anticipation rose as the birthday boy Jos Buttler came out to hopefully give us a birthday treat. Instead he stepped back and missed his first ball from Keedy - also straight - and trudged back with a first ball duck. Our possible big first innings lead was disappearing before our eyes! It certainly did not get any more probable when Kieswetter got a ball that kicked, caught the outside edge of his bat and nestled comfortably in the hands of keeper Cross and we had slumped from 271 for 5 to 276 for 8 courtesy of the slow bowling expertise of Keedy who claimed a five-fer!
At Tea we had Kartik and Phillips at the crease with 12 runs needed for another batting point and little hope it would come. At 27 minutes to 5 when the players left the field in a really heavy downpour of rain we were looking at a partnership of 74 between our 9th wicket batsmen. 350 for 8. 91 ahead and 400 possible? Well played gentlemen.
However, unfortunately the deluge of water that comes down sees the end of Day 2 as the pitch is waterlogged almost immediately. The daft thing is that the groundsmen will take the covers off in beautiful sunshine but the rain was very very heavy.
Lancashire or bust

There does not seem to be a thread on this match yet (the Jones thread has wandered off) and so perhaps this can be it.
BBC in the West Country recognises that Somerset is second in the major domestic competition and still in serious contention by declining to broadcast on today's match. No doubt Bristol Rovers 3rd XI requires all their attention.
Early wicket for Willoughby - while Notts are 4/2 after 8 overs.

Interestingly, according to Cricinfo, our debutant Christopher Jones was born in Lincolnshire in 1973 and is now aged 36 years and 344 days. He has seemingly played 3 List A matches, apparently for Cambridgeshire, between 2002 and 2004.
Anybody wish to confirm or deny these cyber-allegations? It would seem that our youth policy is taking years to reach fruition ...
Commentary has gone for me, not sure if i am alone. I'll switch to Radio Lancs (or maybe even Notts), but if someone could shout when 'our' commentary comes back i'd be grateful.
Let's face it, if there's one guy that we probably thought it would be very hard to dislodge today, it would be Shiv Chanderpaul. In terms of how dearly he sells his wicket, he is a man after Boycott's heart.
In fairness, there is usually lavish swing at Trent Bridge. England allowing Yorkshire to play Shahazad must also have been a big help. Ajmal is too good for the Notts top order, IMO.
Come on, for the love of God, banish one of these spinners and let's start batting.
Yorks have really pushed on at Trent Bridge - things are starting to look extremely grim for Notts.
If they lose this one, that would be a fifth defeat of the season meaning that, at best, they would have lost just under one third of all the CC games that they have played this season. I'd suggest that that should not really be the stuff of which CC winning sides are made.
Drifting off topic - or at least off division - Pietersen lbw Cosker for a second ball duck. 40-over rehab doesn't seem to have changed his luck with the red ball.
I think its fair to say that the Yorkies must be slight favourites for the Championship at this rate and at the moment. we will need to get rid here and bat out of our skins if we want to do this.
I think this last wicket stand highlights our need for an out and out quick to be honest.
Nottinghamshire have the opposite of momentum at the moment, having been thrashed in their previous game and looking like they might be totally eviscerated in this one. If they don't summon some back-bone, then the weather might become their best hope of staggering over the line.
Notts and Somerset both playing away from home, but against sides who are unlikely to be playing for championship honours/runners up cash nor for their survival in the Division. And Yorkshire, a home tie against Kent, likely to be battling to stay up. Could be interesting.
And all the matches in the North of the country. The weather may have a final say, and at this time of year I think the Eastern seaboard may fare a little better than the wild West.
Grockle - I think Marcus will be keen for whatever crease time he can get tonight. Forecast could be dodgy... we need to get on with it.
Unless there's just one over left or something, I expect to see Marcus go out there tonight (IF we actually get the wicket) and try to bat in Colchester mode.
Remarkable knock, apparently, by Andrew Gale. Talk about a captain's innings. The kind of knock under pressure which might mark him out as a potential international, temperament wise.
p.s. Grockle - score is now 198 for 5 - Andrew Gale ton
We've generally been very good against the tail this year, so I wouldn't say it's a massive in built problem for us, you have to remember the average batting ability of bowlers has gone up.
Gary Keedy has got last wicket `form` for Lancashire against us at Taunton.
Suffering from back pain and batting with a runner, he nevertheless contributed eight runs to a record last wicket stand of 98 in just over an hour with Neil Fairbrother in 2001.
At least Keedy didn`t take any wickets in the match - in fact spinners didn`t bowl a single ball throughout the four days.
Wrong Wickham, co-commentator. The Wykeham Arms is indeed an excellent pub, but is not named after Somerset's reverent wicketkeeper but after the man who founded Winchester School and New College Oxford.

Just a mention on Ben Phillips who, on paper, bowled very tightly for 7 overs first thing. I'm afraid I didn't see it that way. His bowling, particularly to the left handers was virtually all on or outside leg stump, with one or two really balls.
Just slipping this one in off-message as it were. Is there an embargo on comments re Zander ? Am I looking in the wrong place ? Or does everyone else know the story ? Personally I'm a little bit shocked. Have I got this right and he has chosen to go home rather than stay with us for what could be the most important 2 weeks in Somerset history ? Hmm.....I've been a bit of a fan of his (increasingly so this season) so I feel a bit miffed to be honest. Makes me question whether I want to see him back next year. Is that unfair?
Streeter - I think Z de B was left with a difficult decision - stay and play the last few matches with his adopted county, with the county championship still in the sights along with the chance of playing in a Lords final. Or go back to South Africa, play for his hometown side where he has played for longer than with Somerset in the Champions League against the top T20 teams from around the world.
If only the IPL/BCCI hadnt kept changing the dates, eventually bringing the whole competition forward by a fortight and therefore clashing with the end of the English domestic season Somerset would have been in the competition too!
I can't believe you got almost a whole day! 20 miles down the road in North Devon you would have been lucky to have an hour!
It has rained for 3 days solid in Southern Ireland.
Thanks very much for the comments this afternoon. One of the problems of amateur commentators is that sometimes you have watched more than the people on the mike who may dash in from work to talk about what they see in front of them.
Have to agree about Ben. Until the new ball there was very little bite in the back end of the Somerset bowling attack and we suffered again from that lack of variation in the pace department when not a lot is happening. No use of Arul Suppiah to mix it up a little and the solid defence of the last couple was good enough to cause us problems.
I thought you picked up the thread remarkably well, Grockle, considering how little time you had before you were required to be articulate. I hope tomorrow will be a little less distracting (and that we get a full day's play and 400 runs from our ten remaining batsmen).
I shall be on the road all day and so may miss a lot of fun.
More time tomorrow Mike I'll have a chat if you're about :=)
Very sad to see Marcus go. He looked so confident on the ball and I was right that he was deciding when and where to score. Mahmoud was not in control. Deceived by a good slow ball from Keedy.
Looking forward to seeing Chris Jones tomorrow - possibly the most important day of the season for the club and if it comes off, probably the most important day of many many many many years and I'm not working!!
Imagine if Hildreth or someone played cricket for an SA franchise in the winter, but because we did well we had an extra game to play in; would you be happy for them to have him?
Your posting, AGod, would imply that it was Compton and not Jones who was the nominated temporary replacement for Kieswetter (and I am sure that was not the case).
The England and Wales Cricket Board are considering sending a pitch liaison oficer to Trent Bridge tomorrow, after surprise was expressed that one was not present today for such a high profile match - and with 18 wickets falling in the day.
The pitch is said to be so green that it is indistinguishable from the outfield. But it does seem a rather strange choice of surface by Notts, when a high scoring draw would surely have suited their cause better.
No criticism of Zander from me. I can see his, and the club's, dilemma, and respect the decision each has made - although I'd have preferred him to stay with us, I'll be cheering him on in SA.
Hampshire were faced with the same dilemma as Somerset over whether to allow Neil McKenzie to return to South Africa to play for the Lions in the T20 Champions League - and took the same decision (absolutely the right one in my view).
Both Zander and Neil were born and raised in Johannesburg, have played most of their cricket there and now have the opportunity to represent their home town cricket team in a world tournament.
Hampshire, like us, also face two vital cc matches - although for them it is at the other end of the table.
I don`t know about McKenzie, but Zander alerted Somerset
to the difficulty right from the word go this season.
Be amazed if Notts get points deducted.
Not saying they shouldnt but at such a crucial point in season would be a brave call, even if it is the right decision.
If the pitch was ok then Notts dont deserve the title on basis a title winning team surely cant get bowled out for 59 on a perfectly good pitch?
Huge day for us tomorrow, difference between 0 and 5 batting points could be the difference between 1st or 2nd, be great time for Arul and Comps to get a significant score...
Yes, I'm sure it was the right decision as well. The only thing I've been a little surprised about was no statement from Zander himself on the other site (unless I've missed it), stating his disappointment at missing the climax to our season and wishing the team well.
I have been extremely impressed with Z de B during his time with us. I do hope the parting of the ways was an amicable one and that we can welcome him back at Taunton again next year?

To be honest, it looks, right now, as though Notts would be the poorest CC Champions for some time, should they manage to cling on at the top. Frankly, they are now relying on ourselves and Yorkshire to fail. When was the last time a team won the CC despite being utterly thrashed in at least two of their final three games (slaughtered by Durham, getting slaughtered by Yorkshire.
As of right now, it certainly looks as though Notts would be far less impressive champions than Durham were in the past two seasons. I think only the weather (and maybe the performances of Lancs and Durham vs ourselves) could save Notts now. Their morale must be shot.
Padded Up - I cannot claim to be an authority on such matters, however I would say that your black and white picture of Marcus is utterly superb.
I think you should approach the club with an offer to sell them this photo for official publications etc or something like that. If they don't want it, why not get some posters made up or something? Maybe there'd be sufficient demand here for such a poster? I would LOVE one.
I'd be interested to know that those that know more about such matters than myself think.
Many thanks for your kind comments Wickham and AGod. I have a super duper lens for this one so I'm glad you like the results. AGod I'm assuming you like the celebratory one?
As for selling my photos, well I am but an amateur, though I have been paid a couple of times for use of my work. However, I always ask for any royalties to be paid direct to one of my favourite charities.
If the club wanted to use any of my shots I'd be so honoured that they could have them for free. A photo credit would be ample reward. Plus I'm not sure what the rules around selling photos taken on Club property would be. If the pros are paying extra for the right to sell their stuff then amateurs stealing their lunch would rightly not go down well.
That said, if anyone would like any of my photos for personal use, to get blown up into a poster or whatever, then send me a pm with your e-mail address. Unless anyone knows of any reason the Club would be unhappy, for Grockles I'd do it on an honesty basis - just give an amount equal to what you think it's worth to the Somerset Cricket Museum.
Edit to clarify: My previous photos that people have used have all been unrelated to cricket!

AGod, I'll e-mail the Club tonight to make absolutely certain they don't mind, though hopefully not as I'm hardly about to start selling in bulk in competition with the shop (or indeed selling at all). If all is OK then I'd be delighted to send you the original image.
Yorks all out 268. That means 2 batting points + 3 bowling points for them = 5 points. Notts got only the 3 bowling points. So if Yorks did indeed win, they would have 198 and Notts would have 205. We are currently on 180, but have already added 3 bowling points to that.
Very tight at the top. Let's hope the weather doesn't spoil this enthralling conclusion to the season.
We must try our best and let's hope we win the Championship - but be careful - if we do win it, what on earth can we all moan about during the winter???
At 150-4 if Compton can play the anchor while Kieswetter, Trego and Buttler do their stuff for 400+ he will have gone a long way to justifying BR's punt with him.
I'm afraid my optimism with Compton has just about finished. I have no real issue with a no 3 batsman having a long innings with a strike rate of 44even when we need runs more quickly in the circumstances, but what will not do is to use up 112 balls and then get out. After this morning's display he needed to kick on towards a hundred- steadily while CK, PT and JB pushed to rate up
Compton got 49! I'd have liked it to be more, but I'm not going to condemn him - esp as conditions this morning can't have been easy. I still maintain that he will be fine, and hope he'll be a top-three bat for Somerset for many years to come.
You cannot criticise someone for playing defensively because they don't get a big score.
He made a decision on how to play, in order to best get Somerset in a strong position; just because he got out, should not change whether or not that decision was correct.
No batsman has ever been able to just decide not to get out, so I don't know why you're expecting NC to be able to play completely chanceless cricket.

we have now collapsed and with Notts fighting back its not looking good. We need our tail to wag to get us to at least 300, but even at that 2 points down the drain.
Batting last on a wicket that looks as though is now turning will not be easy. Last chance sloon for someone to step up please
Curses. Friday's forecast, if realised, means we can really only win this game by batting once - no time for us to bat twice if only 3 day game. This Keedy spell has done for us, I'm afraid.
Huh? We're 29 ahead with two wickets left. Let's back our boys to get that up toa decent lead, bowl the Lancys out cheaply, then win tomorrow afternoon! Cheer up, for goodness sake!
I don't see how batting only once saves any time other than the 15 minute changeover? Assuming we need to score a set amount of runs, we will surely score them quickest if we needed say 70 off 10 to win, rather than batting normally now.
hmmm.. spotting again and dark cloud overhead. Mallender signalling to ground staff. Curses.
Very useful late stand this one.
SLC - what I meant about only batting once was that I thought at the start of the day that we'd run up a good score pretty quickly and take a sizeable lead of 175 or so. Then I could envisage us bowling Lancs out and winning the game before Friday.
When I posted a while ago (after 3 quick wickets) but before this very useful stand, it looked like our lead would be only 50 or so and, under far less pressure, I could see Lancs then batting for long enough that we would not have a chance to get the required runs by the end of tomorrow.
I guess it now looks like we might end up somewhere between these two scenarios.
Very well done indeed to Big Ben and Kartik.
Meanwhile, Craig Kieswetter's record of almost always coming off in the really big games remains intact.
I believe that tomorrow's forecast is extremely good, but that Friday's is for heavy rain spreading across the country from the SW.
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2010:09:08:16:40:25 by AGod.
Now off. Sounds from the commentators as if that will probably be it for the day. Good to get a fourth batting point just before this - a really valuable partnership between MK and BP.
In the absence of our commentary, I'm listening to Radio Notts, where they are (predictably) pleased that we are under the rain. Third wicket just gone - Mark Wagh for 90.

well well - Notts fight their way back into this in the way that you might expect of champions !!

Amazingly they had a sort of Monsoon in Wellington (6 miles west as the crow flies) yesterday lunchtime, which would have meant only 2 hours play yesterday. These showers are so scattered but very very heavy, and if you cop one good night Irene! We should order thousands of them for anywhere north of Birmingham for the next 2/3 days.

You don't have to speak strictly!! But you're probably right.
Whatever happens this week, I'd rather be playing Kent than Durham away. Especially after a one day semi with a possible one day final 2 days after the close.
The other thing to ask is whether people would rather that the Championship issue was decided this week so the side could concentrate their efforts on the CB40?
The Championship run in may affect things so much that we fail in both competitions.
Personally I'd love to be planning to fly to Durham next Wednesday to be part of Somerset's first Championship pennant run in. If that was there, the rest would be icing. Disappointing if it comes to nothing but just icing if it doesn't
you thinking of flying up then Grockle? I am thinking of training it down from up here in the North. But as you say depends on events tomorrow and early Friday essentially.
I know what you mean about failing in both comps but its a hell of a lot better than being at the other end.
For those of you interested in the science of meteorology (weather forecasting to you and me), the following might be of interest to explain why the Met have difficulty getting it right:
In this book, David Orrell (PhD) argues that, despite the advent of complex mathematical models, the systems under investigation are too vulnerable to small perturbations to allow truly reliable forecasts of weather systems.
Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to mention the outcomes of cricket matches, although probably the same analysis applies.
Need Yorkies to wrap things up sharpish, much over 200 could prove very tricky...
Great partenership from Ben and Murali, put us right back on top. Any runs tomorrow vital timewise as its effectively runs we wont have to get when we come to chase in the 4th inns, and puts more pressure on the Lancs 3rd inns...
Thanks for the comments re Zander. I guess I understand the situation better now though I don't feel comfortable with the globetrotting multi-allegiance nature of cricket today. That said at least it allows me to say that I was there when Keiron (almost)knocked one over the pavillion at Lords .
A bit late in the day, Mike, but have a good one. Have you asked Jos round for a slice of cake and some batting tips?
I was on the road for some of the day and spent the middle part of it in Oxford, where the weather was lovely. I did not encounter a drop of rain all day but found everything very wet when I got back to London. It was very good of Bloke to send regular updates to my phone, as did Wickham during a previous match. We're a nice lot, this Grockles Gang.
Unlike some, I have been hoping all day that Yorkshire would be out early and that Notts would bat all day and for most of tomorrow, putting the game beyond Yorkshire's reach and ensuring a draw (possibly with the help of the rain). With no disrespect to our friend TykesRUs, we don't want his lot breathing down our necks at this end of the season.
Many happy returns Mike! And what a fine set of shots you took today. I like the one of the Ben Phillips six.
It is not my birthday today though, so I'll deal with the Somerset wickets (not until near the end though...) I hope you won't mind a few more than usual, but I won't have this lens for long and it does allow some lovely close up shots, which I hope you will like along with the usual style.
Nick Compton was unlucky not to get his 50
Peter Trego got his 50 though, and here he is celebrating
And Craig Kieswetter got to celebrate a half century too
And what an innings from Craig Kieswetter it was
Peter Trego and Craig Kieswetter celebrate their century partnership
Murali Kartik batted superbly at the end to help get another two bonus points
As did Ben Phillips
The tail that wagged: Ben Phillips and Murali Kartik between the overs
And some of the wickets:
Peter Trego out lbw
A terrible 20th birthday present for Jos Buttler: a golden duck, out lbw
And finally, my favourite shot of the day:
Peter Trego and Craig Kieswetter between the overs. What do they talk about out there?
I've got the last picture now. Another excellent one. Our heroes probably have very clayey feet and their conversation at such moments may well be extraordinarily banal, but let's try to pretend otherwise.
Sorry, I did have the side on of Compton out LBW, and actually meant to post it with a comment as to how far forward he was. Here you go:
The photos are taken with a 400mm zoom lens, brought in slightly to about 365mm as these things are never at their best when extended to the absolute extreme.
I think you may be right LoL. But let's all pretend they are discussing the magnificent art of grand cricket strategy, and how they are going to win the Championship this season, starting with how they are going to bat through the next over!
So, does Marcus declare overnight or hope for the 400? I'd be tempted to call it a day and see what develops. A decent bowling performance could have them nearly all out by close for under 350 which would give us 260 ish to win which if we were serious could be a 40 over target. My half full glass again.
Right as usual BR. Who am I to even consider depriving so many of one of the aethetic joys of life. How is the weatherin TA 1 The sun is shining on Tyneside
Here had a fantastic day at Taunton for my annual visit. Good to meet some new and old grocklers and belated birthday greetings to Mike.
It was a really absorbing days cricket with the game ebbing and flowing and then going back our way. One of the best days I've watched. Well done to Kieswetter, Trego, Phillips and Kartic.
Like what they've done to the CA but I can see the reduction of seats infront may be a problem in big matches. Best of luck to the team for the rest of the week tho' hopefully back for Saturday.
looking at the forecast I agree we need to do the bulk of the work today. We probabaly have until about lunctime, maybe just after tomorrow to get this done.
If we dont than its goodnight to the CC for one more year. All assuming the Yorkies do the biz.
Hopefully the wicket will spin more today and kartik can find his range.
Kartik's batting has been a huge bonus in two late-season games, this one and Colchester. But he will surely need to be at his absolute best with the ball (or tomorrow's forecast will need to prove to be inaccurate) for us to get this game won?
In the presenting circumstances (in which I believe we will have to win this game today) I would rather that Lancashire had employed almost any other overseas player in the world than Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
The records over the past 4 seasons suggest that Lancs are a difficult side to beat in the CC, anyway, but he is surely one of the most obdurate batsmen this game has ever seen?
Great snaps, my favourites being the ones of Craig by both snappers.
You guys put in so much effort - not only at the ground - but also the laborious process of downsampling/uploading/linking/captioning. It is a noble effort you put in for us and it is appreciated.
Can we have a vote on our favourite pic of 2010? Also, anyone of you got any ideas about where such a large volume of pics could be hosted so we could enjoy the season's pics in the winter?
The result to suit us at Trent Bridgewould be a draw which would give Notts 6 and Yorks 8.The next best result is a Yorks win ( N 3 Y 21) The worst is a Yorkie collapse (N 19 Y 5) We have 7 bonus and I assume CW was run out going for a 2nd run. Anyway even though we didn't get to 400 I think we would have taken 106 for the Philips KArtik Willoughby partnerships. `123 is a handy lead and if we can get 3 down by lunch and 5 before they catch us up, then we have game on.
That's the 3 I asked for before lunch so I won't be greedy, I see Chilton has faced 85 balls in the match, scored 12 runs and lbw Alf twice. Not his finest hour.
Am a bit disappointed at the display so far of brother Chander - I'll have a word with his Mum at lunchtime and see what we can do about it...I think it's high time he put his feet up.
Quite right Preb, I do tend to not tempt fate, and thanks Bloke, what would live be without a little bit of pendatry..and they say the one ;liner is dead. All I asked for was 3 before lunch and 5 before they caught us up. With Chanderpaul gone and my first wish come true I have high hopes of the second bit.
I hope this track is not flattening out. Perhaps we could do with doing a (non rain-bearing) cloud dance, as opposed to having to bowl underneath all this blue sky and sunshine!
Brilliant.. just absolutely brilliant. Cue frantic studying of long-range forecasts for CLS, Leeds and Manchester and juggling of work commitements for possible train dash to CLS.
I have been following Somerset (knowingly!) since 1949.
Now I know some of you have been supporters considerably longer than that. I did not think I should ever see us in this position with 1 championship game to go.
If Swann plays at Old Trafford, NOtts WILL win that game (unless it rains) - in which case we could only win the CC by making sure we get full first innings bonus points as well as the win and hoping Notts get bowled out for 200-250 or so in their first dig at Old Trafford
We'll let Marcus keep his runs unti Saturday.
Forecast for Chester le Street is drizzle on Monday and then dry but cloudy with some sunshine for Tuesd Wed Thurs.
me too............Sideways might play but I think that will be that. Bresnan too for Yorks and maybe Jimmy A.THeres two games Fri/Sun and then Fri/,on/Wed. Does Flower want to risk them playing all week. Some may play but not all.
If we can get 24 points at Durham then the rest will take care of itself.
Credit to you, SP. You did indeed remain calm. So did the team.
I think it probably doesn't adversely effect the team's performance if we express at least a small degree of optimism!
Nicholas Richard Denis Compton scored 75 runs for once out in the match - a very useful contribution. As so often this season so many players chipped in with significant performances.
Well done, and the best of luck next week. Remember I picked Somerset to win the league in the MTWD pre season prediction game. Nice to see Compo get some runs.
We will have Trescothick and Suppiah, Compton and Hildreth, Kieswetter and Buttler, Trego and Thomas, Kartik and Phillips and Willoughby.
That should be enough."
Yes, it will hopefully be plenty for us, but if Notts get 24 points then there will be nothing that nay of our fine players will be able to do about it.
Without Swann, then it becomes Keedy vs Patel from a spin point of view and I think that favours Lancs and, therefore, us.
It is also, perhaps, worth nothing that first innings scores of 350 are very rare at Old Trafford in the CC. So that's one place where NOtts could lose two points, even if they win the game.
Current long-range forecasts for Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle (the closest proxy for CLS on most forecasts) seem to be virtually indistinguishable from one another. It seems that mainly cloud skies and a 20-30% chance of a very light rain or drizzle is forecast for all three locations.
Can I join LoL in thanking our local commentary team and their sponsors. It's been fantastic to have ball by ball over the internet for home games and I hope that BBC Somerset are thoroughly ashamed of themselves for having failed to provide this service for the home CC matches. On some occasions I've noticed that Taunton matches have been the only CC match with no BBC coverage whatsoever, whilst other county matches that day have been covered by both the home and the away broadcasters.
Good to have had Nathan's blog as well, so thanks one and all.
I suspect, SLC, that it is then decided on most wins which, I'd guess, would favour Notts?
If I am wrong and the number of wins is actually even between ourselves and Notts, then I think total bonus pts gained would probably be the next tie-breaker?
Whatever happens in the next couple of weeks, it's been a magnificent season for Somerset and the supporters. Since my first season watching the World's greatest cricket team (1947 since you ask) we've never been so close to winning the Championship with one match to play. I've never been to Durham - do I need snowshoes next week?
Should any sides in the Championship table be equal on points, the following tie-breakers will be applied in the order stated: most wins, fewest losses, team achieving most points in contests between teams level on points, most wickets taken, most runs scored. At the end of the season, the top two teams from the Second Division will be promoted and the bottom two teams from the First Division will be relegated.
Angell Face - I am told by someone who knows the area that one needs to change trains at either York or Darlington and get a regional train from there. Total journey time from London is about 3.5 hours. I suppose it might be considerably longer from the South West although I would guess that direct trains from Bristol to Leeds (at least) and maybe York are in existence?
Thanks AG. I'm travelling from Norfolk so it's across to Peterborough and then to Darlington unless I decide to drive. Getting out of Norfolk takes two hours!
To answer SP's queastion about Jos' catch - he was at third slip alongside Tres and Kartik.
It was a joy to be there this afternoon and see a superb team effort again! Wickets shared, inspired bowling change to bring on BoBo when others were asking for Kartik to return.
Compo took a very heavy fall trying to catch/parry a six hit on mid wicket boundary and was laid out for about 5 mins - it looked serious as he fell back heavily over the advertising hoardings with an arched back.
Luckily the cold sponge revived him and he stayed on the pitch. He does seem to give life and limb in the field!
Exciting times ahead guys and gals!! Semi final 4 day and Final in 8 days. Could well define the best Somerset season ever. :-)
I echo your words SJB.One of the best 3 days I've ever attended.I would like to thank the weather forecasters for getting it all wrong.I suppose it all adds to the tension. The lads gave it there all over the whole game.At no time did Lancs look to be in the game.
I am a bit miffed that I have a train ticket for tomorrow not required.I wonder if Mr Gould would give me a refund if I threaten to sue for finishing the game early.
One of the biggest cheers today was when it was announced that Glos were 5/3.Having just checked their score and need 410 to win with four wickets remaining has made the day even better.
I'd like to also say how much the commentary was appreciated on the few days that I was not well enough to get to Taunton.I know we have a little moan now and again but I'd call it constructive critisism. We are all most greatful for all who give up there time to bring us this service.
No, there will be some entirely inconsequential football game in which David James will get another zillion goals knocked past him - this will obviously take priority.
Somerset’s new all-rounder C Willoughby hitting a six.
G Keedy bld Willoughby, 53 championship wickets for the season.
L Procter he did try and delay the Somerset win.
S Chanderpaul lbw Thomas he held this pose for a few seconds he knew he was out.
S Croft stumping not given off Kartik’s bowling.
A good win with good company throughout the match.
Started saying goodbye to some friends until next season, always a sad time of year but it’s not over yet, there is the icing to come.
Lancashire skipper Glen Chapple, who missed the Somerset match with a slight thigh strain, trained in the outfield at Taunton during the lunch interval yesterday and today. He said afterwards that he should be fit for the Nottinghamshire showdown at Old Trafford next week.
Somerset must certainly hope this is the case, for Lancashire looked rudderless for most of the three days. Chapple`s all-round skills and leadership from the front would seem to me to be vital ingredients, along with the batting of Chanderpaul and the spin bowling of Gary Keedy, if they are to beat Notts.
Completely agree, CJM, the radio Lancs guys told our commentators that Chapple was unlikely to be fit and I was dismayed. The news you have provided is much better!
No, snow shoes not yet required although an extra layer might come in handy. Chester le St forecast is for drizzle Monday and then cloudy with a little chance of showers for the other 3 days.
There are trains from Durham but not frequently. There is a bus service from Durham Bus Station the X2 to Newcastle which goes via Chester le Street. Likewise the same X2 the other way from Newcastle to Durham. About 20 mins from Durham 30 mins from Newcastle. Anyone driving for the first time there is a car park opposite the ground. Anyone flying to Newcastle get the metro into the Haymarket and catch the X2.
We can't hope for a draw because that puts us at the mercy of Yorkshire. We just have to win, preferably with full points and hope. But what a great position to be in.
Excited doesnt cover it, not sure i'll be sleeping for any of next 9 days, mid sept and we are still well in the 2 main competitions.
A joy to support such a team this year, enjoyed every minute, next 9 days are biggest in my cricket watching life, could be a memorable finish to whats been a great season.
Superb effort by the boys, lets finish it off now lads, can someone get an open top bus on standby for a Taunton parade on Sunday 19th, maybe, just maybe................
Some great shots to finish off the County Championship season at Taunton Mike. I particularly like the Keedy one.
Here are what will probably be my final set for the season; I hope you will indulge me if I finish off with a few extra. It was good to end with such a lovely lens for the shots. Thanks for all of the comments throughout 2010, I am glad you liked the pictures.
For anyone interested, the lens I had for this match was a "Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM". No tripod required as the image stabilisation in the lens is superb.
So, here we go for my sign off set, starting with the wickets:
Gary Keedy bowled by Charl Willoughby
Shivnarine Chanderpaul out lbw to Thomas
Simon Kerrigan out lbw to Thomas
A few of the celebrations:
Congratulating Thomas on another wicket
After one of Trego's wickets
A pat on the head for Charl Willoughby from the Boss
A couple of others I liked from Day 3:
Peter Trego having a think
A superb Championship season for Willoughby, one more match to go
Murali Kartik and Peter Trego, perhaps one for a caption competition?
And my last photo from 2010:
Nick Compton and Arul Suppiah, victorious and surrounded by a vanquished Lancashire
Great photos of a great day.I've e-mailed Tim Pemberton at Radio Bristol pleading for live coverage from Durham but we all know the answer don't we.Remember they sent two people to Rotterdam to cover the Glos T20 game.I can see next week being real agony sitting by my lap top for 4 days.
I e-mailed Tim Pemburton ar Radio Bristol but have received a reply saying he won't be in the office until next tuesday.
How convienient!!!!!
It makes me want to scream.AGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some magnificent photographs to mark a magnificent victory. Many thanks to LoL for keeping me in touch, from lunch-time, by text messages.
This is a team whose players frequently perform above themselves - for example, the three highest aggregates by Somerset batsmen in this match were achieved by players with fairly modest averages this season (NC; CK and MK); and three of our main bowlers (MK; BP and AT) have averages this season which are well ahead of their career averages. When some players fail, others seem to rise to the challenge. I suspect that the Master, as captain, together with Brian Rose, Andy Hurry and the backroom staff take a huge amount of credit for that.
Don't forget Charl performing above himself with the bat.I can see him pushing for an all rounders spot next season.
Never underestimate The Willow Man.
In trying to take a catch one handed Compton fell backwards onto to the boundary fence with the middle of his back hitting the top.
When it happened Willoughby rushed over to him and like most of us thinking it looked bad, much to our relief after several minutes he got up and carried on fielding.
Thanks for your photos PaddedUp it is good to see it from a different angle.
I had a word with Peter Anderson yesterday and to his credit he came over to me to speak before I had a chance to see him.
I said I hadn’t seen him much this season and he replied I come when Somerset are going to win (he knows you know) I then said you have been here a lot this season then he smiled and said no and went on his way.
That LBW of Chanderpaul looks like the most nailed on plum ever!
Basically everyone has played well this year - Big Ben far surpassing expectations, Charl proving he hadn't lost it (mumbles after the first game).
If we'd had a little more luck (Kent rain, Notts declaration, playing Notts when they had Broad) we could have won this already. Which will make it even better when we win next week.
yep wickham.......I really hope we can do it and it will be down in no small measure to JL. How he turned us round from where we were in 2006 (and some shrewd signings too) is remarkable!!
It's the same process as that of England from Hussain to Vaughan.
You need the "hard-ass," to bascially cajole and drag the outfit up by its boot-straps. When this has been achieved the side will suddenly be hard to beat.
The next step is often then best accomplished with a more relaxed (but still shrewd) hand on the tiller i.e once a professional culture has been ingrained, it seems that a more relaxed approach to matters can succeed in helping individuals to flourish (e.g. Hildreth, Phillips).
I don't know that Banger would have been the man to drag the club up by its boot-straps (might be too amiable) nor am I sure that we would have achieved the same results, this season, under Langer.
My immediate thought on hearing of Compton's collision with the boundary board that a similar accident damaged his grandfather's knee so seriously he was never quite the same batsman again. It was very reassuring that grandson was fit to bat soon after his accident and to steer us home.
Lancashire coach Peter Moores tells BBC Radio Lancashire that his side's County Championship title hopes were ended by a superior Somerset side. [news.bbc.co.uk]
Bristol Rob and I were talking to Alfonso Thomas this morning I was wondering how Nick Compton was because sometimes it can be the next day when bruising comes out, Alfonso said he was ok.
I should add that, while Palairet and I always thought the Lancashire Lad a bumptious boy, we had a very high regard for the real Archie, our sainted keeper.
Througout the four days of the game ,for reasons I will not say, Tractor remained tee-total.Perhaps for at least one game every season he could remain in such a state and bring us another handsome win.
