A friendly 3 day game against the local rivals from Bristol is the first game of this season on the virgin turf of Taunton. The weather is a mixture of the last vestiges of winter and glorious Spring sunshine and the commentary team numbers 13 with 90% of them under the gae of 16.....interesting times.
v Gloucestershire (Friendly) @ Taunton Sunday 3 April 2011
A 12 a side game with 11 batting (it ended up as 13 v 12 but no-one was really counting). The squad for the home side included
No prizes for those guessing who would not be batting. We think that the visitors won the toss and put us into bat on an overcast Sunday - simply because it seemed sensible to bowl first.
The pitch was the "constant" thing on a surface of a number of greens! It looks like the ground needs a fortnight yet to be completely sorted, quite a lot of grass on some bits of the outfield and others a little less dense, patches of different colours in many places and evidence of work being done in some areas while others look ready to go.
The Ondaatje Pavilion looks good after its makeover with something like 800 white seats in two stands replacing the older green seated enclosure that was there last year. The erectors were putting the finising touches to its 'livery' during this game and it will be ready for the start of the season. Other than that there are not that many cosmetic changes to the ground. Most of the changes are on the pitch in the form of our 'second tier' of prospective players for the county.
Gloucestershire have also got a whole bunch of new faces. Many have had to be brought in because of the outright evacuation of familiar professionals from the county at the end of last season. More than one of their bowling attack have a couple of new Somerset players (Gamaal and Steve) for their summer contracts and their presence in this side. Nevertheless the old opening partnership stride out to face the venom of Payne and Saxleby and latter finds that bowling to Marcus Trescothick is nothing like delivering to a second eleven wannabee. 8 off the first 3 deliveries makes Saxelby re-assess but Payne is more of a handful and he has Arul ajudged LBW in his second over by another new face Umpire Burns!! I don't think his former team mate was over impressed with the decision of his former captain...it seemed straight, it might have been a little high. This brings Nick in early but he gets into the swing quickly and the two Somerset men start to push the score along in overcast conditions mostly at the expense of the River end bowler (Saxelby and then Lewis) while the impressive Payne causes them far more problems.
The skipper passes 50 just before his side passes 100 and he looks like a century certainty until he edges one of Payne's to Dent and goes for 63 at 123. Only 6 runs later and Compo reaches 50 as well only to then try and flip one from Norwell down the legside where the ever alert Batty pouches the ball in one hand after a full length dive. We are at 129 with new men Buttler and Trego at the crease.
Lunch arrives and then the two men look to move the score past 200 in the afternoon session. Unfortunately Payne has other ideas and skittles Jos at 151 to usher Barrow to the crease followed by rain for three hours with only another 10 runs added.
The rain finally gives up after pulling the groundstaff on and off for most of the afternoon and we get play for about another two hours eithere side of an early Tea. Pete goes to 50 and Alex went but Lewis Greogry stayed with him until the end of the first day with over 260 up.
Monday goes past in a blur I am afraid as that is the day when a bunch of students do the commentary so unfortunately details have to come from the official site but when you go back there there is no search facility to find material that has gone from their front news page!
So - Marcus declared with 406 on the board including a good 87 from batting allrounder Gregory he looked good with the bat after getting his timing sorted on Sunday evening. We then took the Glos opener Cockbain first ball courtesy of Charl Willoughby who didn't seem to need a 'sighter' before getting the ball on the money. They went on to accumulate 140 courtesy of a fighting innings of 60 odd from Batty. Hussain blew away 5 of the others and Gregory, Charl, Max and Pete got a run out and cleaned up the rest.
By the afternoon we were batting again after the skipper did not ask the visitors to follow on and instead sent Arul and Alex in again. It looked like he wanted to give those who hadn't had time at the crease a second chance to get their eye in and allowed that to happen until the afternoon of Day 3. Then he let the bowlers loose again and had the Bristolians at the brink of defeat before the game came to an end as a draw. Good run out on the home pitch. Good performances from most batsmen in one of the two innings and a good run out from Hussain who managed predigious bounce and got his first Taunton five fer against his old team mates.
What's more the teams of commentators on Monday did their job and watched Somerset blow a side away for the first and hopefully not the last time at home in 2011.
v Cardiff UCCE Friendly @ Taunton Vale Saturday 9 April 2011
On Monday 4 April Somerset will be playing Day 2 of a 3 day game against the Bristolians at the County Ground, weather allowing.
I've arranged a little outing for some Year 10's from Uffculme school in Devon to provide ball by ball commentary for that day;
a) to give them experience for their Media Studies course
b) to give them a taste of live cricket
c) to give fans who won't be able to get to our last friendly some insight into what might be the closest first team line-up before the start of the season 10 days later.
The idea is that teams of two/three students will take an hour each of the game and provide commentary on about 13 overs each.
All of them will have never been on live radio before. Lots of them will be having a crash course in cricket in the next three weeks to get them up to speed with the game and many of them will be ladies.
If anyone is about that day I'd like to ask you for your help and support by using the messageboard to ask questions and support their efforts. I've no idea how it will go and I may be stepping in occasionally to help out but it's good of the club to support the school's idea and it may at least allow some of you an early listen to the what's going on on the field before the Warwickshire game starts on the 14th.
Just thought I'd give you early warning.

A very good idea Grockle that will give them some practical experience and maybe some of them will become interested in cricket if they are not already.
Normally the friendly matches are over on the flats side of the ground so if the new stands are not finished it shouldn’t make any difference. All we want is some drying weather and we should be ok.
That's an excellent initiative, Grockle. I will be overseas and probably out of contact, but otherwise I should have been pleased to participate in the way you suggest.
I'm hoping to run the system through on the Sunday afternoon before Monday - the first day of the friendly - so keep your eyes on the streaming option. I'll need someone to tell me its working as there's just going to be me talking to myself in an empty ground except for 22 men some people in the Caddyshack and that elderly man and his canine.
It looks to me like my first suggestion of the pitch being over on the “Ondaatje Stand” side of the ground may have been correct, the sight screen sheets are up in that position for that same pitch.
They've covered a pitch on the Somersert Stand side this afternoon Mike - the one over that side looks like it is being prepared for the 14th possibly?
The Ondaatje is done - bit more 'Mecanno' than I thought it would be and it hasn't encroached on the concrete in front of the old shop as much as I thought it had. I would have taken a photo but my phone was out of battery.
That why I always carry a spare, I said on the redevelopment thread the space at the back is more than I thought it was going to be.
I think we will have to wait and see where the Sunday match is Grockle, Jason Kerr agreed with me that it was early to put the sight screen up for the 14th and it does look a long way over for a first class match.
I was there at 4 this afternoon Mike and that wasn't up. So I'm not sure what they are doing. As I say the strip you are on about had everything on it and they were staking out a wicket in front of Gimblett's as well with tarpaulins and covers.
No idea what is going on but it would be a flaming short boundary to the Somerset if they are planning ot use the one over that side for Warwickshire.
Thanks for that youngen. The game IS at the County Ground. Somerset are batting 53 for 1 in the 10th after losing Suppiah to Payne in the 4th for 1 LBW. Tresco is on 24 and Compton is on 20.
Lewis has just come on to partner Payne who is bowling well from the OP end. Saxelby opened with him and went for most of the runs.
I'll work on the commentary angle but it may not now happen until tomorrow.
Thanks Sloop. Nothing at this end at all and no-one to ask about it so I'm afraid the paln for tomorrow may not go ahead because I can't guarantee internet access at the ground.
Presently there is no play here because of heavy rain. They did come out again after lunch for long enough to see Jos Buttler bowled by Payne (the absolute pick of Gloucestershire's bowlers) at 151. He'd scored 12. Pete Trego is on 11 and Lewis Gregory had the chance to get off the mark with a single.
Lots of water on the covers and the umpires have just come out to have a look.
The commentary is sorted now. There will be some tomorrow and for the rest of today if we get cricket. The covers are off but there is grey stuff over us and rain has been pretty severe when it has come. We nearly got the covers off earlier but another spell put them back on again.
I will update at 4:45. If nayone listens can you please give me an idea of volume and quality if its not too much trouble.
The outfield at Taunton IMO has deteriorated a great deal over a number of years. At one time, the ball used to travel across it, as if it were on a billiard table, but in recent times there have developed a number of dips and hollows. This has been very apparent when I have noticed the ball bobbing up and down on its way to the boundary.
I believe that much work was done on the outfield during the winter months to try to remedy this problem.
Have you noticed any improvement to date this year please?
You are welcome Grockle it gave me an idea into what you have to do while commentating and appreciate the work you do on the mike. It must be easier when there are two of you, your eyes can’t be everywhere.
Good to see Steve Kirby coaching two of the young Somerset fast bowlers out in the middle during the lunch interval at Taunton today. I wonder if that is one of his roles with his new club.
Good to see Steve Kirby coaching two of the young Somerset fast bowlers out in the middle during the lunch interval at Taunton today. I wonder if that is one of his roles with his new club.
As you say, Jerry, that must have been encouraging to see.
"One of his roles with his new club"? Whether it is or it is not, I admire any senior professional cricketer (whatever their own discipline of the game) who is prepared to spend time imparting some of his specialist knowledge and experience to assist a young player(s) who is (are) trying to make their way in the game.
In view of his considerable experience, I am sure that Steve Kirby has a lot to offer in this respect.
Commentary coming through loud and clear here in Coventry guys. Nice mix of descriptions of what's going on in play, plus some chat and facts between the overs. I'm enjoying it!
How are you finding it commentating on the cricket without the benefit of slo-motion replays?
Well done Connor and Ben - enjoyed your commentary. Good attempts to tell us where the ball was going and who was the striker and bowler. Told us about the weather etc.
Good volume Grockle - just occasional mic bumping/wind noise (?)
Can I also just add that both the previous duo and the two people currently commentating (sorry, didn't catch your names) all have really nice clear voices and enunciation? I'm guessing that you haven't done much of this sort of thing before so it's pretty challenging, but although you might have occasional pauses to look up players' names etc, you're doing so with hardly any 'ums' and 'ahs' which is nice. Keep it up!
PS - don't forget regular mentions of the current score please. Some of us are sitting in offices, surreptitiously putting the headphones on every few minutes, so a quick reminder of the current state of play, to see what I've missed while trying to get some work done , is great.
Well done the new guys - haven't caught your names yet.
Following Shep's comments it would be really good if at the end of every over you gave the score and which batsman has what score (that's what they tend to do on the Telly!).
I'd be interested to know which of the young Somerset players have impressed Steve Kirby and why (those that didn't play first team cricket last year)?
The interview with Steve Kirby was excellent and a lovely way to pass my lunch break! Thanks to the very professional interviewers and the engaging interviewee.
Any chance of the scoreboard being up on Grockles Grockle?
Missed the Kirbs interview. Will there be a chance of downloading/listening to the interview later? Or you perhaps doing a summary for the site sometime?
Not got the tech to record it I'm afraid not enough laptops I'm afraid.
Will summarise the stuff I heard later today hopefully.
The scoreboard is up on Grockles for most games but this one is not being covered by the main sites. The only place this scorecard would exist is in the Somerset press box i'm afraid.
Just to let you know that the commentary has been breaking up here for about the last ten minutes - it's clear when I can hear it but it's cutting out for a second at a time every few seconds. I'm not sure there's anything you can do about it, mind!
Here's a question for you - after you've finished your commentary stint today, will you be more likely to take up watching or playing cricket?
My hobbies, incidentally (as you asked about this a few minutes ago) include (a) encouraging women's participation in cricket, and (b) trying to get Grockle to use apostrophes ...
Loving the commentary girls, best of the day so far. Making me laugh and keeping up to date with the action, well done.
A question for you - Have you enjoyed your day at the cricket?
And some final comments from me before I go and do all the stuff I've been putting off most of the afternoon ...
Major plus points
All the comentators I heard spoke really clearly: you were all very engaging, enthusiastic and clearly comfortable at being in front of the microphone. It was a pleasure to listen to you. You also picked up really well on requests and suggestions, e.g. to give the score at the end of each over.
Points which might improve
The main thing here is actual cricket knowledge - who each player was, which part of the field the ball was hit to, etc. I guess when you're watching the cricket it can be hard to describe it to someone who can't see what you're seeing and who has to rely on your voice to tell them what's going on.
It's interesting to note that the 'points which might improve' are due to a relative lack of experience, and not any kind of inability to commentate. I guess you probably learned first-hand just how difficult it is to keep a live commentary going, and how much research the normal commentators must put in before they start each game.
Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed your day. You certainly brightened up my day in the office, so many thanks!
How many time have you listened to a commentary on the radio and wondered what the people looked like, this is a photo of the talented students you all heard today on the cricket commentary.
I have to say they seemed very nice and I am glad I met them.

I hope we have another pre-season game against a more worthy opponent? By this I mean one that will provide a closer facsimile to the kind of opponent we will face in CC1.
We got caught cold last year because we did not play in round one and then went to play Yorks (who had played in round one) and got well beaten (the only time we were well beaten all season long.)
We are not playing in the first round this year, either.
I popped down in my lunch hour and saw Suppiah hitting a few lovely straight drives, and he was starting to look quite comfortable. My 'reporter' at the ground has informed me that he was out 3rd ball after lunch though.
Trigger was trapped LBW for 14 and Buttler was out for 24 before we declared on 135.
Willoughby took an early wicket and Gregory has just taken a 2nd to leave Gloucs 73/2. There were 48 overs left to play when they began their innings, so I guess there's a small chance we could bowl them out.

With Gloucestershire, I would say it's more "probable," as opposed to "possible," although of course it will depend whether Marcus elects to "go hard," for the win, as opposed to giving everyone a bowl etc
Watched an hour after lunch when Jos and Tregs were batting. Never seen a greener wicket at Taunton. Both batsman struggled to a get a bat on ball as it was moving all over the place. Also never seen the outfield at slow.Have they just re seeded the whole ground? It looks like they've dropped in areas of new turf
If the track is doing all sorts for the bowlers then things sound very, very grim for Gloucestershire on the bowling front, too.. i.e if we ran up the sort of total that we did in conditions that are loaded in favour of the ball.
Not very entertaining today with both teams going for batting and bowling practice.
What made up for it was the company of the fathers of Alex Barrow / Jos Buttler and James Fuller (Gloucester) and I also met “old boy” today.
I did tell them not to look on here tonight.
Nick Compton was bowled by Liam Norwell.
Jos Buttler was bowled by James Fuller.
The club has got this wicket wrong as you can see Ian Cockbain was bowled by Max Waller and not caught by Alex Barrow, it may be corrected by the time you check.
As you can see the wicket keeping duties was taken over by Alex Barrow today and he had some difficult balls to deal with.
Yes I spent an interesting hour at the ground yesterday. Delighted for the young cricketers to see such dedicated parental support. Also a pleasure to watch Grockle's very own 'Lord Snowden' at work. I'm sure we are all grateful to
Mike BOS for the service he provides.
It looks like not only was the wicket green but it "played green," as well which it often does not do at Taunton even when it looks green.
The batsmen that were bowled look like they were completely, totally and utterly beaten i.e that they got their bats nowhere near the ball which suggests either "magic balls," or quite horrendous errors on their part.
Can I please ask for some information from people who have used the commentary feed for long periods in the past and on Sunday/Monday.
We recorded some of the student commentary on Monday and have found that the commentary seems to start to break into short pieces with silence between after about 20 minutes of consistent listening. If you reset the website then the feed remains to normals but breaks up again after about another 20 to 30 minutes.
Has anyone else experienced this in earlier seasons? If not was it a common experience yesterday with people who listened.
I've let the club know but need to find out if it was a common problem or something we experienced at the Ground. Any comments welcomed.
It's the reason we didn't get the Steve Kirby interview I'm afraid.
Hi Grockle, I experienced the break ups in the online commentary feed exactly as you described on Monday.
Last season the online feed did break up from time to time, but not with the the same regularity or frequency as it did on Monday. A simple 'refresh' fixed it each time and was not required regularly enough to become a pain.
Me too Grockle - it was like listening to Norman Collier!
Closed the feed and started again and it cleared. That might suggest a caching/memory prob on local machine but if several people got it obviously a generic prob.
Good Nelliec. The trouble was we were recording it on one machine with no way of monitoring it and the feed started to break up halfway through the first question because it was recording from the girls coming on to commentate at 12:45.
It might be possible to edit the silence out but it would be a hell of a job with about 30 edits per minute!!
Have I made a bad mistake with my photos? The BEP are saying that Ian Cockbain was caught at the wicket, I must be missing something. [www.thisisbristol.co.uk]
Perhaps the keeper's reflexes are so fast that he first caught the edge, then stumped the batsman and got his gloves back away from the stumps, and all in the time that it took for Mike to take this photo?
After all, Mike's photo does not show the ball hitting the stumps....
Well people I am glad I have sorted it out, I have just returned from the media/press open day and the best person to ask is the bowler.
I have been correct all along he was bowled by Max, and Max knew they have it wrong.
I will post photos of the press call team photos later today, I have an appointment this afternoon so it will not be until this evening at the earliest.
You can still see the drills from the reseeding and now with this dry weather it could harm any growth unless the whole outfield is watered regularly.
You can see this from close up not looking at photos.
To back Rob up this photo was taken in front of the OP next to the net area and it is like it all over the outfield. There may not be a problem when it is dry but when it gets wet it will soon get muddy.
In the Gloucester match the bowlers had trouble just off the square where the outfield had the top taken off
Thanks for that Mike.Your picture shows exactly what I said.
I wish people wouldn't comment on things they nothing about as it gives a false perspective to others.
I wasn’t going to post that photo Rob but you have to be there to see it.
That edge just off the square I was taking about where the outfield was lowered can just be seen right at the bottom of the photo posted above the last one, although it is not very easy to see.
The squad for today's three day game v Cardiff MCCU is
Marcus Trescothick
Arul Suppiah
Nick Compton
James Hildreth
Craig Kieswetter
Jos Buttler
Peter Trego
Lewis Gregory
Gemaal Hussain
Max Waller
Charl Willoughby
Adam Dibble
Steve Kirby is still recovering from a calf injury and Mendis will be arriving next week.
More likely to be giving Dibble a run out. Little possibility that Steve won't be ready. He was bowling at full belt during the break today. Looked fit.
Aren't you supposed to put the batting in context AG?
No photos today (I didn’t take many anyway) I am trying to use some new software to use with my ‘RAW’ photos and understand it before next weeks match, if I get it working to my satisfaction I will take photos only in the ‘RAW’ format in future.
A good day in the sun today.Just what the doctor ordered.
As Grockle said don't worry about Steve playing next week,he looked as fit as a fiddle and even had a net batting.Nice to see our lower order taking their batting serious, and good to see Gemaal show he can bat a bit.
Well, all of our guys that were quoted on the website (beforehand) said that Taunton Vale is usually a very good batting wicket. Then again, so is the ground on which we are scheduled to play Warks on Friday.
I assume the attack for Cardiff was not overly challenging, but I wasn't there so that's just a guess.
I hope the forecast for the second half of next week is either wrong or will be subject to significant revision.
Mike, (Non photo types needn't bother with this...)
Good luck with your RAW shots. I have only shot in RAW for a year or so as the ability to manipulate the images when you get home is infinitely better than if you shoot JPEG. The only time I would recommend shooting JPEG is if you really need to be able to send or upload photos immediately - most people aren't able to display RAW images at home and websites can't - but most of the time I shoot RAW.
Shooting RAW does mean a bit of extra work when you get back, but I'm sure you won't go back to JPEG once you get the hang of it.
If you are still getting to grips with the software my main tip from experience is not to overdo it with the sliders. Some of my shots from last year I now know I ruined by over-sharpening and over-saturating in particular.
Also, you will get nothing like the number of shots on a memory card if you shoot RAW (perhaps as few as one eighth the number; RAW files are huge). I got caught out once on this...
I too have some new software for this season and am already impressed with the significant extra features and the far better final images that are produced. Hopefully we will both be pleased with the shots we get this season.
It was something you said about a century made against a university side earlier in the week I think. Just thought consistency ought to be maintained.
Gemaal certainly looked at home with a bat and came in at number 8 (shorter tail perhaps AG). He hasn't really got a batting average as he is relatively new to all this at this level.
I have been taking photo in both formats for several years because the software I was using and liked would display but not edit RAW photos, this gave me twice as much work to do each night renaming/tagging them.
I know there are many Photo editing software about and I don’t want anything too fancy so I am using Nixon’s own software ViewNX 2 this allows me to crop RAW’s and then covert to JPG for uploading to my web site.
I am going to shoot in just RAW tomorrow and see how much time it takes me tomorrow night.
Oh right, sorry, got the impression you were just starting to try RAW. Last season I was using the software that came with my Canon, which I assume will be similar to the Nikon. Shooting RAW added a lot more work in the evening, but the difference in end result easily made it worthwhile.
think it was me who made the comment re a century v unis in a tete a tete with old boy who was waxing lyrical re a Blackwell century. I made the point I would be more impressed if it were made in more difficult circumstances which I also do here.
No need to apologise PaddedUp, it is always good to talk photography.
It was strange using the software for the first time tonight after I had cropped the first RAW photo I thought it was going to overwrite the original photo until I noticed the ‘Save as’ button, problem solved.
Hussain's figures look somewhat alarming. Do we have any correspondents on the ground today? Is he spraying it around?
A great strength of SCCC last season was the parsimony of our attack. We cannot afford to have anyone going around the park at five an over so let's hope this is just a blip.
G didn't seem to be spraying it around but they are chasing a lot so maybe they decided to get into it - the openers in these games tend to be the best batsmen in the side.
Remember it's Taunton Vale and not the County Ground where he took a five-fer earlier in the week.
What I have seen today watching James Hildreth set my pulse racing, James came in at the fall of the first wicket 97 for 1 @ the close of play the score was 209 for 1.
A partnership of 112 with James scoring 88 of them off 48 balls.
Siddique looked very comfortable, impressed with him.
Like the look of Dibble too, good to have cover whilst Alfie is away.
Hussain looked fine to me, will not be writing him off just yet.
Hildy starting to look like Marcus in his peak years (not thats he's too shabby now), just that bit better than everybody else, long may it continue...
Roll on Thursday, lets hope rain doesnt hamper our inevitable 24pts...
They called it off at 5:00 because I arrived back to see them strolling off as they had them well and truly against the wall with 6 down and under 3 figures on the board I'm a little surprised.
surely at 5pm there were lots of overs remaining?
first 2 days tea seemed to be 4.10-4.30 due to opening 2 sessions being 2h15m so at 8 wickets down at 5pm im guessing maybe bad weather, otherwise calling it off seems very odd???
wasn't there so hard to comment.
no reference to how match finished on main report...
I left at the end of the Tea interval with them 6 down, I returned about an hour later to watch the end of the game but left the ground as the sides seemed to be leaving the field and people were moving to their cars. That was at 5/ I was in Taunton for another 45 mins and there was no rain or any other problem.
I can see that Somerset had seen all they needed to see, Max Waller was bowling just before Tea and Charl and Adam had had a good run out with Trigger taking a number of wickets before the break.
Except Mike that one of the problems in the past has been being able to apply the coup de grace to turn a dead rubber into points so it possibly would have been good to see them put the University out of its misery in a professional manner and with overs left
I hear what you say, and to an extent I agree, but I think Mike is pretty close to the mark with his assessment.
All the lads got a good run out, the legs are stretched, the lungs aired and everyone is good to go.
There's not a great deal to be gained from knocking over a couple of spotty students, a few extra hours with their families at this stage of the season was probably a lot more appealing.
Almost agree but with Kirby not certain yet to play (though most likely) and Mendis getting off a plane today I personally would have liked to have actually seen that the bowlers out there could knock over a 'bunch of spotty students' rather than take it as read. If it was easy they would have still been home in time to read the kids a bedtime story.
We've come a cropper in this tail end scenario before in early games and just coz it looks like we can do it doesn't mean it's so.
Two days before the first it just seems a bit scrappy but if they are ready I suppose they are ready.
you've got to wonder why they didn't insist on getting Mendis here at the weekend so he can acclimatise bettwr. very stange although maybe its a visa issue.
I believe Warks are having those types of issue with Yousuf who doesn't actually arrive until tomorrow...bizarre!!!
There is no guarantee that Mendis will play on Thursday. (Though others can cope with AG's apoplexy if he doesn't :-)
There's also no full guarantee that Steve will play either (though all indications yesterday were that he is ready). In which case we could see Max in his first 2011 four dayer or Lewis Gregory and possibly Adam Dibble's debut as well with Arul taking the ball.
I'd personally rather see Max because a) Arul seems to be getting his batting sorted early this season and b) I'm increasingly curious as to what Waller has in his box of tricks this year.
It will all become clear at 11:00 on Thursday I'm sure.
Going back to knocking over the tail, we did have a bowler who was excellent at it for a while, but not so good at getting the top order out at any sort of decent economy rate - David Stiff.
Fear and speed CJM. I think Steve will bring plenty of the first and a better line and length to make up for the second.
They all ought to watch Maliga in the T20. He just bowls straight and full and waits for the batsman to miss it. I'm not sure what Steve K's yorker is like but hope to see a lot of it after Thursday.
That was the real difference at Taunton last season. Lots of wicket to wicket bowling on a length. Let them think its a batting wicket and then frustrate them by not letting them score.
One game they flayed 'em, the next it was like pulling teeth and as you say, Durham was one where the latter seemed to be the case. Shame the same backbone wasn't shown by the Lancastrians.....
I think the statement was that they all could do it...not that they did it all the time to be fair Ron.
You tended to see it more often in short form stuff where Alf was a master at it.
Well I'm about for some of them Ron but will be working some of the sessions and therefore will be dropping in and out but will keep an eye out for ya!.
I'd said on here that I consider Gloucs and Cardiff to represent inadequte opponents against which to prepare for Div One.
Quite a few people here poo-poohed me for saying that.
I was therefore extremely pleased to read that this element of our preparation is now under review.
Our captain has said;
"We may have missed a trick by not preparing against a crack first division outfit."
So, there you have it, from the horse's mouth. This wasn't just something that I made up for the sake of it. It makes logical sense to prepare for relatively strong opposition by playing relatively strong opposition.
And it seems the club are now at least considering the same notion.

"There is no issue within the dressing room. I can't think of anything worse than being beaten in such a fashion. I know the other players felt it too and we move on, trying to use the experience as positively as we can.
I believe we may have missed a trick by not having one pre-season game against crack first division opposition and that is something we will look at for future years.
For whatever reason, Somerset have become notoriously slow starters and we can't afford to keep giving good sides an advantage over us after two or three games"
Yep Baggy's guide was the front end of the Liverpool thread (soon to be full of pages of disaster and doom once more) so I got a couple of minutes to merge them at lunchtime. Thought Liverpool in the title would guide people there...sorry. Got to get stuff done when I have the chance I'm afraid.
Why is it a given that another Div1 team would want to play us pre-season this year? They might well think that a defeat to the best team in the land last year is not an ideal confidence booster to start the season, and avoid us for that reason.
I'd think that any team with something about it would WANT to be challenged?
That's how you get better in any sport, in my view - you play against people that are better than you are.
Barcelona do not prepare for their season by playing Hereford United..... or at least that is certainly NOT the final tune-up game for the first team.
Gloucs have struggled for the past few years and then - partly because of SCCC - they've promptly been further weakened this winter. It isn't clear how anyone in our team was going to be greatly challenged by playing them.
Look at Gemaal Hussain. 5 for not very many, if I recall against them?
That might have given a boost to his confidence, but I would suggest it probably did not do enough to challenge him so as to help him hit top form..
I'm sorry but were there loads of posts in January and February about the quality of our preparation or is this all another 'hindsight' revelation?
Quoting Marcus gives it some relevance and it now seems a way to work against what has happened up until now. But it is not the reason or the solution to what is happening here.
Marcus is, like the rest of us, clutching at any straws to provide a way to help stop this happening again. I doubt he thinks it's what caused this.
But do we have masses of evidence that the other Division 1 clubs played 'higher quality' opposition and have translated that into excellent starts?
Or is the opposition you have affected mostly by logistics and geography?
I don't know personally, but the opportunity to post 'told you so' should not camouflage that no-one really knows why this has happened to a side with batsmen in form in January or use it as the panacea for a early multi-level under achievement in nearly all areas of performance.
It might prepare us better. It may have no measurable effect at all and it may not be logistically possible unless the sides in our area become Division 1 sides which I think by AG's assessment of them is highly unlikely in his opinion.
But just because a captain under pressure to provide explanations cites it as a factor does not mean we have found the reason such a fundamental problem in the first fortnight. It's not the first time and it probably won't be the last even if we get Test status and play South Africa and Australia in early April.
I think, Grockle, that what Marcus is suggesting is that it may be a reason for the habitual slow starts, which is also what I mean.
I agree that this particular start has been so bad that a pre-season game against a better team than Gloucs would not have been the difference between the sixth heaviest CC defeat ever and actually beating Warwickshire.
Indeed, it's more likely that, had we had better preparation (in this respect) last season, that we might well have avoided losing both of those first two games last season.
As for the hindsight thing, I had given no thought in the winter. BUt, when we were cutting swathes through Gloucs in the pre-season game, this point did occur to me, and I said then 'I hope our next pre-season game is against a tougher opponent than Gloucs,' not knowing that the final preparation game was actually going to be against Cardiff University!
So, I'd worked out the potential for the problem before the season started but I had not previously thought about it during the winter. Of course, it isn't actually my job to think about such things during the winter.
Generally, I think it's the more northerly Counties that have started the season well. If the generally done thing is to play one's neighbours by way of pre-season preparation, then I would imagine that some of these teams would have played against each other.
Surely if it was that obvious and our slow starts were so habitual we would have dealt with it before now - if it was possible to do so.
Do the Northern sides always start better? - this season is one season and the start is two games old so not really the one to look at. Wonder what has happenend in the past and whether it has related to the games they have played in the two to three weeks before the real start.
A "better" start with no preparation games at all for us last season (Cardiff Uni were the first game and were duly hammered). Did we play anyone - I have no record of any but haven't gone back into the report archives to check.
Since 2005 we've played local sides Glamorgan, Glos, Devon Cornwall and Cardiff Uni
I don't think the Uni game is a planned prep game we simply play them early in the MCC trophy or whatever it is called. We were supposed to play Glamorgan and we did play Worcestershire as well.
Great that it occurred to you - maybe a look at our usual prep would have shown that we were doing something we usually did.
I realise it isn't your job.
It's not your job to worry about who was batting at number 8 or the 'gap' in international representation around the last bit of May. Didn't stop you being very 'vocal' about those subjects as important considerations before the start of the season.
Prep being a contributing facgtor didn't occur to Marcus and Andy and didn't occur to most of us either. Until last week.
Well, I think the slow starts are habitual. Marcus certainly seems to think so because he said so -- and not with the benefit of hindsight as he said it before the Warks debacle.
Posters may well be right about Glo`shire as pre-season opponents, but we were given no choice over Cardiff MCCU.
The University matches are allocated by the ECB and you just have to get on with it.
Somerset may have been unfortunate to be paired with Cardiff this time, but if you look at some past seasons they were presented with anything but walkovers against student sides.
In 2004, Loughborough declared at 304-8 in their first knock and reached 154-2 in the second, after a certain Monty Panesar had helped bowl Somerset out for 379.
The following year, Durham UCCC called a halt to their first innings at 433-4 against an attack including Caddy, McLean, Johnson and Blackie, with Will Smith, later to captain Durham county, contributing 156 to a record first-wicket stand of 301,
In 2006, Cardiff UCCC declared at 302-5 in a rain-hit match. And in 2007, although Loughborough were hustled out for 72 in their first dig, they reached 224 second time round with useful knocks from two batters now Surrey players, Spriegel and Harinath.
Not a bad four years for Somerset`s pre-season student opposition.

Well, Marcus was talking about one game against Div One opposition, so I suppose it would be the Gloucs game that would be replaced, then, as opposed to the University one, if the university one is compulsory.
I guess, Grockle, we'll see whether this is just Marcus floundering around for an explanation, or whether there will be a change in policy regarding a pre-season game for next season.
Lots of teams either don't play friendlies or don't put them on their fixture cards, but I do note that table topping Lancashire played 2 games against second division Kent (one abandoned, the other a draw) and Oxford University.
It seems their preparation against lower division foe did them no harm.
Although Kent were at least in Div One last season. Still a stronger side (on paper) than Gloucs.
I might ask on the other SN boards do see if fans of the other teams know who their teams played against.
Still, if Lancashire played Kent twice (presumably home and away?) that does rather suggest that perhaps the cost angle should not be a barrier should we wish to play somebody less local. I believe both Lancs and Kent are up to their eyes in debt, whereas SCCC are not.
AGod Well, I think the slow starts are habitual. Marcus certainly seems to think so because he said so -- and not with the benefit of hindsight as he said it before the Warks debacle.
There ya go again.
No-one said the slow starts were some hindsight revelation for our captain or questioned that we had them.
I think the point was that the relationship between our preparation and our 'habitual' slow starts hadn't become glaringly obvious until very recently and certainly hadn't been identified as a major problem (if it is) well before the start of the season.
After the start to this season I don't blame anyone responsible for the performances looking at every aspect of our start and seeing if it can be improved. It has to be the right thing to do and can do no harm even if it has little effect.
"After the start to this season I don't blame anyone responsible for the performances looking at every aspect of our start and seeing if it can be improved. It has to be the right thing to do and can do no harm even if it has little effect."
Well that much we can certainly agree on. I would think that many others would agree with that, too.
Lack of pre-season preparation is just an excuse which may or may not relevant. What is clear is that Somerset's opponents would be looking at some change in their own personnel until those out-of-form could find some elsewhere. I accept that none of our existing XI have suddenly become long term failures, BUT there appears to be a complete lack of confidence at present, and some of them need time away from the 'heat of battle' to regain it.
I just hope that we don't start assuming that any 1 day reasonable successes necessarily equate to 4 day success.
My opinion is that any pre season matches should be good enough to start the season off, to give that as a reason is only making accuses for a bad start to the season.
Next thing you know they will be blaming the pitches.
Edited - I put season instead of reason.

Lancashire played both of their pre-season matches away from home, a drawn match against Kent at Beckenham and a drawn match against Oxford Uni at the Parks. A third match against Ket also at Beckenham was abandoned. Old Trafford was not available to them for pre-season matches due to the work on the square over the winter. Maybe by playing away from home they helped their performance at a not-particularly-familiar Liverpool in those first two games of the CC.
