Notts - A complete washout?
Day 3 before this!
By Grockle
August 19 2011
Rain for two days with 20 runs made and two home wickets lost is not what Somerset need at the moment. The weather relents on day 3 but this game is a 'washout' as part of the run in to the CC1 title unless the two captains become very inventive indeed
v Nottinghamshire CC1 @ Taunton Wednesday 17 August 2011
After rain for two days, one foray to the crease, 20 runs to Somerset and two LBW wickets to Fletcher (Trecothick and Suppiah), we finally get this game underway at the beginning of Day 3 in absolutely wonderful conditions!
The Somerset side is;
Trescothick, Suppiah, Compton, Hildreth, Kieswetter, Buttler, Trego, Kirby, Thomas, Willoughby and Dockrell (making his CC1 debut)
Notts won the toss and put us in and then struck twice before the rain came and the game went into stasis until 11 on Friday. The chances of a result coming from this that is Pro Somerset are very slim but we'll see how it develops over the first two sessions and I suppose, take it from there.
Presently Compton and Hildreth are facing Shreck and Fletcher and they have almost doubled the score without further loss. However, it doesn't stay so wonderful as we pass 50 and Compo plays a lovely forward defensive shot down to the wrong line and sees his stumps skittled by Andre Adams. There is the basic picture of the morning session. Some good shots, batsmen looking comfortable bowlers maitaining decent lines and occasionally a batsman mistaking the trajectory of the ball and losing their castles! Kieswetter did just this at 72 and was really surprised by it. Hildreth was less surprised but no less out at 88. Batting points do not look that likely by the lunch interval by which Buttler and Trego have moved the score on to 130 for 5.
After lunch the bonus point situation looks even less likely when Thomas replaces Pete when he flips one off the glove (though PT might disagree with that assessment of where it hit him) from Fletcher to Read. 137 for 6 and this day is not looking like a good one for the home side in terms of getting something from this game.
And the Andre Adams show continues as he gets his inswinger working once again and we continue to misread the line of the ball. Jos sees his off stump uprooted before we make 150 (147) and Alf then drives at one and hears the clatter at 154. However we have the team of Kirby and Dockrell to come and they seem less impressed by the Notts bowlers both hitting boundaries and in Steve's case hooking Charlie Shreck for four.
It doesn't last though and Adams gets George LBW off the toe at 177 after a partnership of 23. In comes Charl to a long conversation with his partner about batting strategy. Adams bowls, Charl steps to off and misses the ball as it flies just past his stump. He misses the next so Adams bowls a straight full slower one and out goes the stump and we are gone for 177. Adams takes 6 for 33.
Now that's an interesting situation except we get no bonus batting points. Hmmm

No place for Mr Phillips?
Somerset 2nds have included Max at the Rosebowl today but not George.Read that into what you will!

Thanks nell
included in the seconds squad for the rose bowl so we probaly not see any of these included for the first team.
Has our squad been announced and what are the weather prospects for the four days?
And Dockrell all but certain to replace Kartik?
Thursday a wash-out throughout the land but this pm forecast to be washed out in TA1.
We need to win the toss and field in the hope of getting some bowling points before the rain.
Don’t go by who was playing for the seconds yesterday because that was a one day match and some of them could return for today if needed.
Somerset wanted a strong team yesterday because it was a Trophy match and up until yesterday the seconds hadn’t lost one, unfortunately they lost the match with one player James Regan scoring half the runs.
Weather doesn't look as bad today now ,so might get away with just a few showers.Just hope the band of rain forecast for tommorrow goes through earlier , and maybe we get some play mid afternoon tommorrow.
I wonder if Tres is too worried whether he wins the toss or not??

The weather forecasts give me optimism. Even though we will
have rain "The Weather Channel" and "Accuweather" say our rivals will have worse. Warwick in prticular have a terrible forecast for the match beginning on the 18th. This should solve the statistical problem of their game in hand over us.
Maybe we will only get three out of four days play, let us hope as it is our home game it will be a three day wicket and we have been winning in three days or less anyway.
Notts too in the last match were "blooding" new players, they have given up on the 4 dayers.
Interesting also that Notts haven't picked any of our ex-players - Wood, Edwards, Phillips. What did they hire them for?
Losing the toss a big blow. Saturday's forecast has improved but, still, the met office forecast suggests there will only be seven sessions in this match. Unless we're playing on a complete 'green mamba,' of a track then it would be very tough to force a win in only seven sessions. Realistically, it would be less difficult to do it bowling first as then there would be a chance to bundle out most of the Notts guys in this first session today.
As it is we will have to fight hard, I would imagine, just to survive and then you'd normally expect an easier time after lunch as pitch eases, ball softens etc, but there is unlikely to be much of an after lunch in this one.

Matt Wood was released by Notts at the end of last season. Not sure whether Neil Edwards has recovered from the broken wrist he sustained earlier in the year.

I don't think we should go with a contrived game and find ourselves in the position of defending a contrived last day target.... or at least that option should be a last resort for use only if it appears likely that Lancs and Warks will win their games (hopefully they get enough rain to prevent that.)
A mainly cloudy day across the region with outbreaks of rain at times. Perhaps a few heavier bursts of rain during the morning in the west. Some brighter spells developing in the afternoon, mainly towards eastern counties. Winds remaining light. Maximum temperature 20 °C.
It would be nice to have an occasional update on the commentary, I went home before any announcements were made, did they take an early lunch is there doing to be an inspection ect??

Friday is meant to be a nice, sunny day so batting may get easier as the day wears on. But if we start badly on Friday, then it might even be worth declaring and starting to bowl in search of the three bowling points, rather than waiting until batting has become much easier - i.e. if it looks like we'll struggle to get three or more batting points.
I think we'd get away with a declaration under those cirumstances because Justin Langer got away with that kind of move at Lord's against Middx in Div Two.
It seemed a gamble worth taking at the time, but it simply did not work.
LoL

I was shocked at the time when we walked off. When I thought about it later then I thought that, actually, if he was going to make a declaration based on that logic, then it would have been better had it been made some time before we were 8 down. Then again, perhaps he would not have got away with such a declaration i.e say at 5 down, penalty wise?
In terms of us going on to lose the match heavily on that occasion, the cirucmstances this time would be different in that there would be only one further day left in this match.
Still, Marcus seems an instinctively more conservative man and it's not a gamble I could see him taking.
Very frustrating as all other games are in play.
Still, I'm not sure we can complain too much, overall, given what happened to Durham's most recent game with Hants.
And we can still do a rain dance for their games for future days..
We may get more play today - but not much.
The sunshine isn't too far away.
Grizzzly
Hope there is enough play to get a proper result.
I will have a look but don't expect too many.
And yes, that includes everyone down to Willoughby and beyond, should he not be in at Number 11.
Our batting has rolled over like 9 - pins too often in the past.
Time to fight.

Congratulations to Nick Compton on bringing up 1000 CC runs this season on an otherwise frustrating day.
It was said Compton was hired to replace Langer in the batting line up. He certainly seem to have done that and there is no reason to think we will not go on to greater things.
Well done to him.
AG, no, not at all.
They just stop drinking the mushroom tea.
This shot by Arul Suppiah gets him off the mark unfortunately he was not to get many more runs today.
Marcus Trescothick, with the few balls that we watched today it looked like ball may have been moving around, it was hard to tell from Gimblett’s Hill with the pitch so far over towards the Andy Caddick Pavilion.
The ball must have done something for Marcus not to get bat on ball with a straight bat, Marcus Trescothick lbw L Fletcher.
Nick Compton hitting four runs before the rain came.
Especially if we offered them a carrot of 280 ish on the last day?
Well, all we have to do now is score 250 on Friday in 50 overs and then bowl them out twice inside 45 overs total. Easy-peasy.
As ridiculous as it may sound something like 300 off 80 i'd say would be about the required bait.
They have no incentive to accept anything challenging, we are the ones who have to push in my opinion.
Others will say play safe but in my opinion we need to take risks to win this thing, there are 4 of us in the running, we wont do this with 3 safe draws and 1 win.
Plus you dont even get chance to rig every game, so if we can do this i say do it.
I'd far rather us come 4th/5th having tried to win it than miss out by 4/5 pts having settled for 2/3 safe draws.
Anyway, premature maybe, if we can get some kind of total on the board we have chance to dictate this game properly
Still, I suppose you could always take a swim across the Bristol Channel if you get homesick !
All the best.

Whatever forecast we check it is bad for Somerset.
Who was that crackpot yesterday expounding on Southern
weather good?
But Warwick our main statistcal rival look to have same problems and there is plenty of time for the weather factor in the next month to even out. In a straight fight I beleive we are Red Hot Favourites to win the thing. I would accept going into that last Lancashire match one win behind them.
I hate contrived games with declaration bowling and pre-agreed x runs in y overs targets.
If there must be a contrivance here, I'd prefer to see something along these lines;
We declare overnight.
Notts forfeit their first innings.
The only "arrangement," is this;
Somerset bat until they are all out or until Friday's play has ended, whichever occurs sooner.
On Saturday, Notts chase whatever we made on Friday.
Effectively a one innings game, although we have a 20 run head-start but this should be counterbalanced because batting should be more difficult on Friday than Saturday, given how wet the outfield will be and the fact that the pitch is likely to have sweated under the covers.
If Notts believe that batting will be much easier on Saturday than Friday, then they might, possibly, go for such an arrangement? Apart from anything else, if the pitch is still full of juice, they might fancy their chances of bowling us out for 200?
I don't want to see us having to agree to leave Notts an easy, short chase, such as 250 in 55 overs or something as the only kind of arrangement that they would agree to.
If that's the case, I'd rather say make no arrangement at all and just try and pick up as many bonus points as humanly possible. After all, the great weather roulette may spin in our favour in the next round...

There's really no point in playing cricket at all if one is going to pre-determine all eventualities based on a weather forecast, teams' possible batting and bowling prowess and expected thoughts in captains' heads at any given future moment.
I'm sure Tres will have a few potential strategies in his head which will chop, change and come to fruition as this game evolves.
I am going over to have a look and report back.
Of course, if we said to Notts that there would be a double forfeiture of innings - with our 2nd dig and their first dig being forfeited and the arrangement otherwise being the same, then I'd think Chris Read would surely go for that, simply because Tres is already out in our first dig so they'd surely back themselves to get us out on Friday for a manageable total to chase on Saturday.
Looks like the rains just about gone through.Possibility of play mid afternoon maybe?
If it really is the case that the rain has moved through more quickly than expected, then perhaps there is some chance that it will penetrate far further north than expected, earlier in the day? (please!)
At worst at end of this match we should be one win behind
ayn other team which we can cope with. If we get vitually
no points it would be one win and quite a few points. Effectively we would need to win two more games than
that team and there is not the time to do that.
Indeed if it was not for the first two matches when
we got virtually no points we would be comfortably ahead
now. We cannot take risks. A good haul of bonus points is good, we are not plaqying "catch up" like last year. (maybe against Warwick)
Unless the overnight rain has been saturating the outfield (which I doubt) I can see play sometime after lunch.
AGod, you really are a weather god - unfortunately (for Somerset) you got this one bang on!
Forecast for the first few hours of the afternoon is now brighter, though Met Office predicting that the rain will then return. So, it all depends on whether we can get it dried up quickly enough to get back on before it rains again (assuming that part of the forecast is correct.)
I imagine that the going out there will be pretty tough today if we do get out at all. I think that I might be fairly pleased if, from 20 for 2, we manage to get to 200 in this innings, so as to get one batting points.
One bright note the covers were being removed also there are no signs of any water on the outfield.

AG, does your crystal ball reveal any signs of rain in Brum?
At least Worcs have saved the follow-on. Mr Gareth Andrew did his level best to make sure that that happened. Gareth has had a pretty nice career since he moved up there.
Quote:AGod
Gareth has had a pretty nice career since he moved up there.
We have closely followed and really enjoyed the success of Gareth Andrew and Wes Durston.
Not right to speculate on the rights and wrongs of their departures, but well done to two lads who tried so hard for Somerset.

Apparently, no further rain is now forecast so if it's not raining currently and none is forecast, then perhaps we can get one session in after tea meaning, effectively, that this will be seven session contest.
The pavements in town are drying out nicely though, so hopefully the same is happening to the outfield.
Less optomistic than I was about play today :-(
If we got out for an hour or so, I think the realistic best case scenario though would be only about 80 or so for 4 or something, though.
Still if we were 80 for 4 overnight, then with a really strong effort from the second half of the order we might still manage to scrape up to 300 or something on Friday?
The minimum that we need to set our sights on here is surely six points i.e three for the draw and all three bowling points. That is, surely, the minimum that we SHOULD get from this game. If we could get 2-3 batting points as well, I think that would be a decent job of salvaging a bad situation.
Terrible communication from the club to be honest
Can we just not find a floatilla of giant tugs to toe this island a good 1000 miles or so SW of its current location?

So a nice sunny day tomorrow. I assume it will start on time and hope so as I've booked to go down to see it. Wouldn't normally bother with going to a game all but nailed on to be a draw but I suppose the bonus points could be ultimately important and have not had the chance to get down to HQ all summer, so going to give it a go and hope that Saturday's forecast is wrong and that we can deliver a near miraculous performance to still win this match.
There is a chance Lancashire and Warwicks matches will be affected by weather or that they do not win. In which case, no damage is done.
If they are really narked with us (and I cannot see why they would be given that Kartik has proved to be genuinely injured) then maybe they'll take it on in the hope of beating us and, thereby, almost putting us out of contention?
Not sure Tres would be ready to offer a deal on this - not in his nature.
Brian doesn't seem at all happy with the drainage according to his interview today
Quote:cricketjerry-mouse
Does one detect a whiff of schadenfreude on Riverside this evening, after posters on this site rubbed their hands in glee last week at Durham`s misfortune with the weather.
This is fair comment.
Last week Durham only got two points, this week we have bad
luck with the weather and drainage. Hopefully we will get a lot more than two points.
Three games after this, two at home. Two or three wins can still make Somerset champions.
Has that period lapsed that we are now allowed to address him as what he's always been anyway.
As frustrating as the last 2 days rain have been i struggle to agree with B Roses views that we have been 2nd worst hit.
I believe we have so far had 5 home championship games, 4 of which we have won, some in less than 4 days and with weather interuptions, and 1 absolute hammering from Warwickshire.
Clearly this game looks likely to end in a draw but compared to previous seasons i think from 6 home games we'd have bitten anyones hand off for 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss???
Richard Gould was interviewed yesterday on Sky regarding The Oval and he stated that the ECB provided £75K for works there.
Or is it just the test grounds that are eligible for this?
The post they made Phil redundant from could have been re-introduced within a 3 or 6 month period anyway.

Grizzzly
Is another issue we have not the quantity of groundstaff?
As a rule we seem to have 3 for championship games, yet Monday we had 6, was this purely because it was on tv?
I know there is a limited amount that can be done when it rains but BR's issue seemed to be with the drainage, would we not be better off with more groundstaff to aid the mopping up when it becomes possible?
Sure there are a number of staff/helpers who could be rounded up if they were given the righy instruction.
Lets hope the ground work starting on Friday 16th Sept has desired effect this year!
I was under the impression that we had a reputation as a quick drying ground?
Perhaps the problem is more related to the outfield than the drainage per se?
Has anyone else heard these sort of complaints about drainage on our ground prior to this season?
P.s. Norwich - I think any county can be given a drainage grant but it's a competitive process. I've a feeling that Worcs were given one but then as a frequently flooded ground, I would suggest that New Road would genuinely have a greater need than Taunton.
There was the normal three, Simon, Martin and Dan plus Rob from the Taunton Vale Ground.
Normally it is the first three as in this match to pull those heavy wet sheets around.
I uncovered this from the ‘Taunton AGM’ thread from last November, whence Grockle reported that Richard Gould had said : -
“We are very pleased with the wicket this year and the team this year did a great job (as, Richard pointed out, did Frosty for a number of years). We were the fourth or fifth pitch in England. The outfield should be better next year as well after the work on drainage this winter. It won't be completely flat but it will be less 'bobbly'. We got no grant for drainage even though the ECB has done that for every international ground (about £800K each).”
The fact that we are not a Test Match, or a ground yet accorded One Day Internationals (and let’s face it there are ten of them), may be what Brian Rose was alluding to.
Clearly there's a balance of not wanting to have too many paid when often not needed but if its drying up which is part of the problem then would more bodies not help, i apprecaite only so much that can be done after large amounts of rain
Marcus alluded to the onset of the problems being as a result of the recent develoment of the ground and it is clear a long term solution is needed.
If the intentions expressed by the ECB in 2008 are still 'current,' then roll-out to the non international counties should, presumably, be imminent?
When the flats were built it was thought they may cause a problem but there is a drainage channel built along the bottom of the Somerset stand that takes the water away that runs down the stand.
If the ground today was deemed too muddy for a resumption then that is presumably a direct consequence of poor sodding?
I was in the groundsman area at the scheduled start time before the match got underway when the covers were taken off then put on again with only the four of them going it.
Most people I've talked to expect some remedial work to be done over the off season to deal with a number of issues around the edges.

They do have a machine to do it.
I have read that article on cricinfo and I could comment on a lot that was said, the only point I will make is even with extra drainage in I don't think we would have got anymore over played in the last two days.
One page I found interesting to read from us was on the “GROUND REDEVELOPMENT 2010” thread – link - [www.cricketnetwork.co.uk] reading page 43 reminded me what was said at the time.
Also, the 2nd worst rainfall after Lancs wasn't about play lost this season, but about weather patterns in general, I think.
From when I used to regularly go to Taunton in the 70s and 80s, I seem to recall it being talked about as not draining very well because of the proximity of the river and the high water table.
Anyone got a spare jacket they want to donate to the cause?
I've got a parka, it's a bit grubby, but hey ho, they are Northerners after all.
They aren't anyway. They are Midlanders

I'll just dig my Pakamac out of the cupboard.

Day One
1- Paul Harper and Julian Cattenach.
2- John Hamlin and Ben Manning.
3- Eric Cole and Paul Bird.
Day Two
1- Bill Luckett and Tom Doyle.
2- Paul Harper and Chris Stone.
3- Roy Kerslake and John Hamlin.
Day Three
1- Paul Harper and John Hamlin.
2- Brian Harris and Eric Cole.
3- Roy Kerslake and Paul Bird.
Day Four
1- Brian Harris and Julian Cattenach.
2- John Hamlin and Paul Bird.
3- Roy Kerslake and Eric Cole

137 for 6....bonus points looking as rare as rocking horse droppings.

It's been a very strange day with very little playing and missing yet, somehow we've lost 5 wkts.
I was surprised that Pete was given out but three of the other batsmen to fall were beaten all ends up, all by Adams.
But as we are only now playing for bonus points and there
will be rain tomorrow it is important to get enough time
in Notts innings for us to get full bowling points.
That will limit any damage.
Before the three consecutive wins we would not have
believed the position we are in now.

This is George's Somerset first class but but not his actual first class debut because he has played 3 times for Ireland in the intercontinental cup against the Netherlands, Canada and Zimbabwe.

"....but then matches in Somerset have been completed in a day, as anyone who saw Bertie Buse's benefit match in Bath will remember."
To be fair, Kirby has played nicely too.
But, still, unless we've got our own weather forecasters who are confident of a full day tomorrow, we need to get on with taking 9 wkts!?
Bat on till we're all out.
6-33 today after the two vital wickets
in the 11-3.
At least we can stop worrying about any
declaration and should have time for
the full amount of bowling points.
Kirby has just induced what, by my reckoning, was the first genuine outside edge of the entire day.

We really haven't been effective in the first ten overs of an innings very often if at all have we?

Not surprised that Charl was quickly changed.
I now think that, perhaps, I will get to see Dockrell today!
Maybe Notts have better conditions, but are beginning to look like chumps!
Forget the Championship title - it just aint gonna happen and our inconsistency with bat and ball deserve just that.
Quite brilliant from Craig, superb!
Bit too early to write off the CC1 because of a heavily rain affected match after a three match winning streak put us back in contention. The batting came up against Andre Adams getting his wicket taking ball working from one end - he has been taking a few with it this year.
Would Marcus and Arul have struggled in the present sunny and pleasant conditions? I would humbly suggest not really.
Will this game put a dent in our progress? Probably, but it will be the weather that is primarily to blame rather than a poor Somerset performance.

We've induced three bonafide outside edges from Turner, three more than Notts produced all day, but we've yet to find anyone to bowl at the stumps as well as Adams.
Still think Kirby and Alf have been decent, though. Charl was moribund, to say the least.
I'll endeavour to sort them while Roy keeps you entertained if that is the case.
Thanks

To me that is not entirely down to the weather.
I would call that a poor batting performance even allowing for Adams bowling well.
We must agree to disagree I guess !
As just confirmed by an ex Somerset captain on commentary so yes we will have to agree to disagree...
Just don't put too much into a morning of cricket in a pretty destroyed game ay?

There are however these things called bonus points of which in this match we are going to get precious few.
However the general assessment at the ground is not entirely the one you put forward earlier that is all.
This pitch is becoming benign I'm afraid and Patel and Bravo don't look in any kind of problems.
Dockrell coming on at the River to see what he can do.

still get two or three bowling points.
Lancashire's match is turning against them with
Worcs 154-2. Hants fighting back nearly back to
parity with only 2 wkts down and rain coming on Saturday.
It could be little damage done after this match.
Quote:taung
Somerset achieving much in bowling but will
Sorry that should read "not achieving much"
Only Charl really was below par with the ball. Adams the difference today, with bells on.
Hope we get a bit of play tomorrow and one more point, at least.
Unfortunately they are mainly Somerset’s wickets.
I will start with a positive photo of Alfonso Thomas hitting a classy 4 runs.
I had to show George Dockrell’s first first class runs for Somerset.
Now for those who only like good news posted and there are a few look no further.
[
All the Somerset batsmen who were bowled were well and truly bowled.
I start with A Thomas bowled by A Adams.
Next Craig Kieswetter bowled by C Shreck.
I don’t know if anybody else noticed today that Charl Willoughby tried not to stand on the square leg umpires foot, it didn’t make a lot of difference after A Adams bowled two or three balls wide of the off stump that he missed Adams decided to bowl one at the stumps.
Sorry about all these Somerset wickets, I finish with James Hildreth also bowled by A Adams.
PS I know I'm seen as one of the good-news-only brigade - it's not that I mind bad news, it's that one or two posters ONLY come on when the team's havd a bad day or match - and then seem to revel in it. I really don't mind people being critical - I am sometimes - it's the one or two who would claim to be supporters, but seem to enjoy carping when things are going badly. I love you all really, honestly!

It's an extraordinary position that Alf has got his right leg. It looks like a picture of 'the awful moment that Alf suffered a nasty leg injury,' but, thankfully it was not.
The weather has been taking the Urine in this match!!!
Hope we can proceed to get some more bowling points tomorrow but the weather is likely to win again :-(
I do think Craig will be disappointed with his dismissal as it looked a somewhat lackadaisical defensive shot with a big gate. He can certainly be proud of the way he kept, though.
Still points to play for,and forecast says white clouds all day.
Marcus seemed to think similar based on his comments on main site
Met office say similar to Beeb.
Edited to add last sentence.
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2011:08:19:22:36:53 by BristolRob .
Adams found conditions perfect for his type of bowling and got his one that moves in working very well. I think MT may have had a case for criticising later batsmen because it was pretty obvious that he was the danger man but people kept geting out to him.
Craig was Shreck's and that was a bit loose as AG says.
Andre Adams' good day at the office was indeed the difference along with some much better weather conditions for the Notts batsmen.

Guess upshot is there is rain about coming up from Cornwall Devon, we are likely to get some of it but may be lucky/unlucky and have it miss.
As always best idea is probably open the curtains in the morning and judge it then, one gust if wind over night and it may all change, who knows, weather forecasters never seem to.....
If I open the curtains and look from here I'm sure to get a different outlook.
It amazes me how individual forecasts differ so much.
As he so rightly says, posters can and do handle bad news. A minority, however, only deign to put their heads above the parapet when the team has had a bad day or match - and then `seem to revel in it,` as SP states.
They know who they are. What is particularly depressing, though, is that those doing the `revelling` often attach the addendum that they are `life-long supporters`.
Obviously not so `life-long` as to remember the laughing stock days,
I often struggle to understand why some people bother to support a side, I personally find them and their bitter outlook quite sad.....but great entertainment as well, their words of doom and gloom are already things of legend on Gimblett hill.
It's an odd old world, you can almost feel their resentmnet when we're doing well, but then, when things are a bit wobbly....it's like Christmas day for them.
Long may it continue, innit.
Interesting what i've heard from several 'supporters' recently is that several dont seem prepared to come if it seems things arent going well.
We may have short memories but 5/6 years ago we were nothing like the force we are currently.
If people only come if we win then given nature of cycles when this current good one ends will nobody come anymore.
For example tomorrow, we clearly cant win, does that mean nobody will go? Surely 'supporters' go regardless, in one respect if we get 9 wickets and survive for a draw those 6 points could be crucial come the last week.
What makes me smile is that this thread generated 7 and a half pages of comment when there was no cricket at all over two days and then struggled to get off the 8th page when there actually was something to talk about.
It's a strange old world in which we live... :-)

I reckon Charl should have his bat taped vertically to his lower body when he goes out to bat. The draught going through that gap must be dreadful !!
Grizzzly
"Hold on a minute"says I,glancing at my watch,'tis only 445.
Ah well the Beeb still says white cloud all day.
Not much cricket left this season and the winter is a very long time without it,so I'll go along regardless.
Can't think of any other reason for going.
I was pondering, though, that old conundrum, crowd wise, of the fact that most people are at work for most of the duration of each CC game.
I was wondering if, during the lightest periods of the summer there would be any mileage in starting games later, so as to be able to sell discounted tickets to an after-work brigade? Say from mid-May to mid-July could start games at 1.15 or so, aiming to play to say 9.15, rather than 6.30? Would many in Taunton come down for the final 3-4 hours of play?
Obviously, I know the T20 has to be played but there would be 8 weeks in the above time-frame, which could allow 4 or 5 CC rounds, as well as 3 weeks worth of T20.
Would this help to square the circle in terms of the idea that T20 is meant to convert new people to cricket but, if they are an after work crowd, there isn't actually anything else for them to see at an equivalent time, outside of T20?
In other words, they wouldn't exactly be defending this weekend's forecasts with their lives!
For reasons best known to himself, my dad actually complained to the Met Office about their forecast for last weekend which had predicted lots of rain all afternoon on Saturday (It was actually a nice sunny afternoon.)
They did reply. They said 'as well as looking at our site, you should rely on your own intuition and life experience.'
In other words, look out of the window and if it looks much different to what we said it is going to do, disregard everything we said..

You never know, the CC title could yet hang on whether we get to pick up these final two bowling points..
A balanced view is what’s needed, I know of several people that will not register on here so they can post because of those who criticize others views.
I am a sad person I will be watching today's cricket and enjoying it.
Thick cloud since 8am in WSM, if that has any relevance...
Guess current conditions may be of use for us to get the 6 wickets we need.
Wouldnt fancy us having to bat for too long today, onr of those scenarios where we have nothing to gain, if they are positive then thet should be looking for a 200 lead give or take by lunch, we could have 55-60 overs to bat if there's a full day...
Here it is still fairly 'gentlemanly' most of the time, and long may it continue.

They know who they are. What is particularly depressing, though, is that those doing the `revelling` often attach the addendum that they are `life-long supporters`.
Obviously not so `life-long` as to remember the laughing stock days,
When, in your opinion, were the days that Somerset CCC was a "laughing stock", Jerry?
I personally do not recall that we were considered to be a "laughing stock" during the 1950's - a decade in which Somerset finished in bottom place of the County Championship for four consecutive seasons.
True, we were a poor club, both financially, and as a consequence on the field as well, but we were never considered to be a laughing stock.
The days when Somerset could justifiably be labelled with that term (and I had heard it used by the players and officials of our opponents at the time) were 1985 and 1986.
With Botham (Captain in 1985), Richards and Garner all in the side, we finished bottom and one - from - bottom respectively.
There was a lot wrong both on, and even more so, off the field. In an era, which many people still regard as being a part of “the glory years”, we had sunk to the very bottom of the pit. There were some around at the time who blamed “player power” as being the root cause, and the divisions amongst members were very deep – rooted, and up to a point still are, even after the passing of 25 years.
The backlash was enormous, and as most of us know there was an abrasive special general meeting at Shepton Mallet. Most of those who attended were not only current members, but “life – long supporters” as well, but they “put their heads above the parapet” and voted in favour of the committee’s decision – and thank goodness in my opinion they did.
Yes, we were a “laughing stock” then, and I hope that I never again have to witness such an experience; but perhaps, Jerry, you recall a different era when we assumed that unfortunate tag.
I shall be interested to know, but doubt that I ever will.
I imagine the Queen of the South that resides in Buck House sometimes uses such methods in dealing with her rabble .. 'er, sorry, 'family.'
They would put you in the monkey house for twenty years.
Smiley here if i knew how to do it.
I'm not sure I can recall too many days like this of days where rain arrives in the SW and just seems to get stuck there. This happened on Wed too - rain in the SW which never progressed anywhere else. Very frustrating.
It's not so bad when it sweeps across the country from left to right because at least we usually then get play later on and other Counties also get rained off.
As one of those 'life-long supporters' I was one who voted for the Committee at Shepton Mallet. You rightly point to the hideous 'player power' which encapsulated ITB's period 'in charge'. May we never return to those awful days when personality was everything, and results? - who cared! If he was playing today I would still travel to see ITB play, whether it was batting, bowling or fielding, and also his WI colleagues - but playing please under a less self-serving captain.
Voting with my bum today and am watching Ian Bell continue his marathon innings against India.
Indeed, may those dark days never return to our beloved club again.
Lancs on the brink of victory.
Warwicks well held up by Hants.
Worcs 218-8 chasing 329 so table is going to not look very nice come 6pm tonight i fear, really need Hamps to show some fight v Warwicks or it will be nearly all over for us i suggest.
Worcs score slightly deceptive in that I think they sent in two night watchmen, both of whom were dismissed this morning.
Mr Andrew our last hope in that game, I would think.

Hants are fighting back well, effectively 111 - 4. Getting 200 in the 4th innings could be a problem.
I think the chances Warwick will win their match next week are slim. Away at Yorkshire, with a bad forecast and probably the biggest problem, their only real strike bowler Woakes will be absent playing representative cricket.
One win behind Lancs is no problem even if it goes to last match of season at Taunton.
QotS is, as I'm sure everyone knows, The Only Team in the Bible, which is the name of their website.
This post does make sense.
Oh yes it does.
I agree not all over but with a big gap created we'll probably have to win all 3 as others sure to win some games and we can't effect results other than last v Lancs.
Not giving up at all but after this round it's going to be very tough.
Play was due to start at 11.50 after the umpires looked at it the covers were almost off when the rains came again and this time very hard, I would imagine water may have got on the square before the covers were put on, the pitch should be ok.
Is it still raining in TA1?

BobStan - Good news for you - Northants all but certain of promotion now, especially with Middx set for a heavy defeat at Canterbury.
Now, could we have some wickets in TA1, please?
Has Marcus set ultra-attacking fields?
He might as well because 500 for 9 would be a better score for us than 380 for 7!
Commentary is very quiet Grockle and yes tea is always 1540 on last day.

4 more wickets and job done for the day.
Could we just agree 400-9 now and then all go home???

I think there is a way we can win this from here,
BCR has the has the idea, bring back Bertie Buse.
Warwick need 308 to win in 4th innings. they might even
lose the draw points.
Apologies Grockle.Accidently switched onto Radio Notts. You would expect all the footy stuff from them.

Warks are 19-4
Quote:Norwich SCCC
Warks 19/3 - Chanderpaul out for 0
Mirroring exactly his performance in the 11-3 that cost
us the Championship last year.
This is surtely an omen as Warwick subside to 24-5.

Many thanks
Confused of Saltford.
Well done for sticking to it lads.
One more for the last bowling point (I think ?).

Game didn't go well for us, but things could've been worse. Still all to play for...

Keep fighting boys!
Yes, I shall be pleased if Northants go up as I shall be able to see a Somerset away match there.
Wantage Road is not the world's most beautiful ground, but I have always found the regulars there to be very congenial company. Usually see one or two former pupils of A N Cook's old school.
As good an outcome to our game as we could reasonably have hoped for - although when did reason ever come into it?
You can go off and enjoy the football now - I know I am!
Our bowling in this match.
We have struggled to get wickets and got them in clutches but the end result is the best we could hope for in the end, it was also good to see Willoughby ending up with four wickets.
The weather was the winner in this match, on to the next one.
Hants have now beaten Durham and Warks in successive games. And I think their final three include both us and Lancs...
Even today the rain wouldn’t leave us alone.
This is the shot that hit Nick Compton on the leg off a hard hit shot from Chris Read.
Now for a very good catch from Steve Kirby, he ended up facing the other way from a high hit shot from M Wessels off bowling of Charl Willoughby.
S Mullaney caught Craig Kieswetter bowled George Dockrell.
Only three photos today.

The bloke next to me reckoned it was a classic 'evening up,' situation after an appeal against Pete was declined in the previous over. I did think that it was possible that Pete had gloved that one.
Next week sees our annual southward pilgrimage for Edgbaston on Saturday, Essex in th CB 40 HAnts in the 4 day and hopefully a CB 40 semi- which I guess will be away at the Oval or Hove. Can I have some sunshine please
Current forecasts suggest Durham will get a full day on Monday before the weather breaks down and the forecast for Warks is unsettled throughout.
It's pouring down in Dorchester this morning so hoping that's not also the case in TA1.
Still horrid here. Planning to leave in one hour and hoping not to bring this weather with me.
Quote:AGod
I'd sacrifice today and Wednesday if I had to, to produce monsoons in Nottingham and either Leeds or Scarborough ( not sure where the Warks game is to be held?)

Fair comment. As with the T20 our stellar NRR means that our
rivals have to exceed our points total not just equal it. This seems to give us a telling built in advantage, wonder if it was a deliberate plan of action.
Next week the weather and England calls should have an effect
on Durhan and Warwick. Somerset could make considerable progress as luck evens out.
Forecast for Wednesday less than brilliant as well.
Tomorrow we're visiting someone who lives right by the Thames , so I may be gone some time...

Actually, I have remembered that I don't need to worry:
God gave Noah the rainbow sign.
No more water, the fire next time.
So I am assuming AGod is forecasting, fire, plague and pestilence. So that's all right, alright?
