Alfonso takes charge of a depleted Somerset against the Durham Dynamos in an attempt to reach yet another short format final - the CB40. No marcus, No Craig, No Nick C but a welcome return to Jos Buttler and the weight on the shoulders of the spinners and young men in the batting line-up.
v Durham CB40 Semi-Final @ Taunton Sunday 4 September 2011
Durham coming to Taunton for this semi final would not have been most supporter’s first choice. Even having to go to The Oval to play Surrey might have been a more popular choice and a perceived easier route to the Final for a side bereft of the opening partnership of Trescothick (relegated to the SKY commentary box) and Kieswetter (not released from international duty). Having also lost Compton to an injury and without the bowling of Gregory, who is in the side as a batsman only, this is an understrength Somerset against a side very keen to pay us back for two games where we outplayed the Dynamos in most aspects of the game.
The side is therefore;
Jones, Suppiah, Trego, Hildreth, Buttler, Gregory, Meschede, Kartik, Thomas, Dockrell, Kirby
Who would have predicted that to be a line-up for a semi final in mid April? Nevertheless, although it may be understrength it is not particularly ‘weak’. In the bowling department the only real absentee is Lewis whose “death bowling” at the start of the season was a major addition to the club’s game. However, we do go into the game with the three spin attack with the inclusion of George Dockrell in the eleven. However, there is a lot riding on the tightness of Kirby and the ability of Pete Trego (who hasn’t bowled much in short format cricket for a while now) to support our front line bowler and skipper for the day, the man even SKY is calling the ‘Mighty’ Alfonso
Our aggressive front end batting will possibly be replaced by the no less aggressive Peter Trego, though who he will open with is still under wraps but we may see Arul move up the order or they may go with Chris Jones who is a true opener. He however is only playing his second one day first team game which may mean he comes in down the order as a stabiliser if the front end fails to make its mark. James Hildreth will be take on this role for the front five so Jones may find himself well down the order in the Suppiah berth possibly
The middle order still has the “explosive” aspect with Buttler offering the big hitting and Craig M still to fire at that kind of level but no slouch himself. Kartik could come in to bat anywhere in the one day format and if Trigger opens don’t be surprised to see MK in at 3. Effectively we bat to number 8 where Alfonso has shown more application bat this season than ever before. We all hope he will not have to do anything today but he’s there if needed.
We lose the toss and the visitors choose to bat first but that is shown to be a bit of a mistake as the early Somerset outfielding restricts their ability to get off to the hoped for flyer. Not only is Chris Jones screaming around the outfield pinging back returns at lightening speed but he sends Stoneman on his way with a superb return that takes out the middle stump with only 11 on the board. Fielding of the highest order. Peter Trego is also on fire with the ball as we use Kirby and Trigger to open with Alf coming on at first change. He takes 2 in the first eleven overs and with a success for Kirbs as well, Durham find themselves at 44 for 4 when Benkenstein is dropped by Kartik. A difficult chance going between Jos and the Indian at second slip, he got his hands to it but it was just too far away. Will it be expensive one asks oneself?
Jones is having a brilliant game in the field and inspiring sterling efforts from his team mates in the process. Durham struggle to 50 in the 13th, when a difficult chance to Dockrell, on his follow through, nearly sees the back of Mr Blackwell. But these reaction C&B’s either stick or they don’t…this one doesn’t.
Thomas finally turns to Kartik in the 17th simply because the pace men have done such a great job of holding a strong Durham line-up. With both lefty slow men in however it becomes a little easy for the two Durham men who ominously start to rebuild and push the score on at a pace. They’re 50 partnership arrives in the 19th but, at the time when the opposition need Ian to hold himself in check he simply can’t and is taken on the boundary looking for a big, over the rope/stand six. Another quick wicket (Breese caught Hildreth bowled Meschede)puts them back in the mire at 130 for 6. But that man Bekenstein is still there and the miss in the slips is looking very costly. Scott Borthwick is in with him and the score is pushed on during the 20 to 30 over mark, though not at too heavy a pace for the Somerset men to be too worried about their strategy. The spinners haven’t held the line completely but they also haven’t given away floods of runs either.
At 170 for 6 in the 33rd, Borthwick is nearly sent on his way by a diving effort from Suppiah which finds the fielder just out of reach of fully pouching the ball, it lands just under his outstretched hands – difficult chance. Durham safely negotiate 200 but then a second run out has Benkenstein dead and buried when the stumps are broken and it is 201 for 7. Borthwick decides he has to attack and starts to give himself room outside leg. The skipper sees this and simply bowls him a leg stump full toss that he is not there to defend and over goes the leg pole and off Scott trots at 210. Fighting innings, but not really enough. Then Steve, seeing the same policy being employed bowls Claydon and Onions in the same way. As they step to leg, he follows them with the ball, they miss and the ball cannons off their pads back into the stumps and skittles the both of them 215 for 9 and then 219 all out.
Brilliant, sharp, fighting and very focused display from the Somerset men in the field and with the ball. Spin does not win the battle between bat and ball but the pacemen all bowl very well indeed (including Craig Meschede who more than does his job in the middle overs as well) Kirbs comes away with the best wicket haul but a great display from all of them.
But can our batting take this game? Who will open? Will we collapse? Will Banger be happy or apologetic?
The Reply
The first surprise? The opening partnership is not an out and out attacking one. Out stride Chris Jones in only his second CB40 appearance with his partner Arul Suppiah. Maybe it is the total and maybe the club have decided to set a base for later fireworks. However they are there, the two men set up to face Claydon from the OP with the younger man taking the strike. Ominously the big man bowls a maiden and with Graham Onions opening from the other end a number of people probably are contemplating how far away 220 seems. Arul doesn’t seem to be of the same mind as he strokes the second ball from the England man to the boundary for four. It seems the men in the middle have the measure of their task as later in the over Jones majestically pulls the same bowler for four more. Then they both start to move against a loose Durham new ball attack. Legside stuff is punished, anything short or wide is also sent on its way and after 5 overs we have 42 (against Durham’s 16) and are in control of this game. It is now ours to throw away.
Ian Blackwell is brought on as early as the 6th over to quell the tide and does no such thing as a wide legside ball is padded down to the boundary for 5 wides to bring up the 50 and he also goes for 11 off his first over. The skipper then turns to Thorp and for the first time the Durham men seem to get some control back as the slower and more accurate medium pacer turns the screw but he seems to be the only one who can until Collingwood is introduced as his partner for the 10th. Arul is just in total control and Jones looks like he’s been there for ever.
This semi does not constitute a game until 20 overs have been bowled and the spots of rain in the 9th make a number of people worried. The predicted total after 20 overs to give us the win by D/L? 76 runs. Our score after 10 overs. All we have to do is reach 20 overs and this game has to be ours although the total will change with the loss of wickets and Somerset can lose a lot of wickets in a short period of time so this contest is not over yet.
When the first wicket does come it is a most unlucky way for a batsman to be dismissed as at 78 Chris defends a ball by chopping down on it only to see it spin back, roll into the stumps and gently dislodge one bail. Excellent innings from the young opener, shame it had to end but he has done his job and we have Peter Trego stomping out so if Durham think that is the start of the rot they may be badly misinformed as the number three hits Paul Collingwood for consecutive boundaries in the 12th while Arul brings up the 100 in the 13th off the ineffective Onions with another sublime boundary. The man from Malaysia is striking the ball so cleanly it is a joy to watch and his 34 ball 50 soon arrives to much deserved applause – play this man further up the order for heaven’s sake.
Breese comes on in the 17th and offers Arul a ball he simply can’t resist and the opener finds himself stumped as he misses the ball halfway up the wicket and the score moves to 114 for 2. Hildreth is the next man in and Durham must be aware that Jos Buttler is still in the hutch if these two fail. They don’t as they move the score towards what is now a small target for batsmen with this kind of platform. Hilda goes at 149 caught behind off Breese so we send in the best English bat in the short form of the game presently to take this game away and his county on to Lord’s. There are many mutterings about the fact that James didn’t hit the ball that landed in Mustard’s gloves but the 150 is up in the 24th and this looks tied up despite JH’s continued bad luck at the crease.
It doesn’t matter anyway because with the score on 153 for 3 down comes the rain and we aren’t going to get back on the pitch to finish a game we would have surely won. The D/L calculation when the umpires finally call the game off give us the victory by 39 runs…but we were so much better than that.
I can’t quite work out whether Durham didn’t turn up or we were just too good? Many Durham commentators state something Somerset fans will recognise..”You don’t know which Durham is going to turn up”. Tonight the wrong Durham met the right Somerset and were never really in it from Jones’ run out of Stoneman. Peter Trego receives the award for Man of the Match for his excellent innings and his two early wickets. For his superlative, scintillating 57, I would have given it to Arul Suppiah. We sometimes forget how good a stroke player this man is and tonight there was no-one in either team to match him.
Well done the boys. Surrey in the Final on the 17th. Don’t mess this one up people. Craig Kieswetter will be released for it and although his inclusion will be welcome it would be hard to identify the man to step aside after this performance.
Isn’t it great? Please let this be the one to break the cycle!

Two questions.. as a T20 member does that class me as able to get a discounted rate (we got no information with our membership, I had to discover I could use the bar etc during T20 games..)
and b) the usual 13:45 start? I have a wedding reception in Northampton on Saturday and am thinking it's going to have to be a early sunday morning..

Unless Pete (or A N Other) can get us off to a flier when we bat, then they should surely move Jos up the order - say to number four - for next Sunday to try and maximise his crease time.
It's a strong and experienced Durham one-day batting line-up so I'd imagine we will either need to set a stiff total or chase down a pretty large one. Either way, let's get Jos to the crease earlier unless we've managed to really beat the hell out of them in the power-play.

I too will be on an exotic mission all day on Sunday and unable to follow the match. I trust somebody can text me the occasional score flash, improving the scores if necessary.

I think we are in agreement about Arul, Agod and yes, they may indeed plump for Compton as an opener, but I just think Arul has something to prove as a one day opener. He's not simply a grafter, he has the capacity to strike the new ball hard....apart from the Essex pro 40 s-f of last year I can't recollect another time he has made a difference at number 7.
I also think that - even though he is not everyone's favourite - Compton has nailed the number 4 spot this year in the c40.
Meschede has been used at 3, so will probably be used there again, but it is time to be brave so I would put Jos at 3 and Meschede at 6 after James....but luckily for me I don't have to face the consequences if this doesn't work out!

Arul is certainly wasted wh they are playing him at the moment with no time to settle or develop the innings. He is a batsman who can accelerate and push on but only if he is given time. James isn't doing that job at all effectively at the moment and I also think it is time to move the world record holder up the order to give him time at the crease while others play around him and he supports before the push at the end.

I think he means the fabulous rumour that Marcus just has a slight limp and will be OK. Which I think has since been scotched.
The club is waiting on a scan, but since Marcus is not in the current match, I think we can conclude that the injury must be pretty serious.

Marcus himself said he "heard something go" as he turned, so probably there is something more serious that demands at least extended rest. Especially since he was already carrying an injury, by all accounts.

I have always thought that Arul should occupy the same postion in the pro40 team that he does in the championship so this may be his opportunity.He strikes the ball cleanly and people forget you do not have to hit the ball over the top in the power play as you can score runs by playing traditional shots along the ground as Arul does in the championship.He quite often scores quicker than banger when they bat together.Tregs has to open and I would promote Meschede to 3 rather than have him bat,possibly with the tail,lower down the order as this is what Jos does so well.Having Meschede at the top also takes the pressure off him and gives him licence to throw his arms if needs be as there are people that can bat below him rather than the other way around. I have been watching Somerset long enough to know that is not likely to happen though.....lol

The info floating about yesterday before I left the ground was that Marcus was VERY doubtful for Sunday...and little better for the Headingley game.
Looking at the way the Hampshire one was going this will not be much of a problem because the CC1 push seems to have stalled through a pairing of poor luck on the pitch and even poorer luck off it.
The Sunday game may well be our last tilt at the last windmill....

Durham`s leading batsman, Michael Di Venuto, retired hurt after being hit on the elbow by a ball from Wayne Parnell at Hove yesterday, but expects to be fit for Sunday`s semi-final.

The info floating about yesterday before I left the ground was that Marcus was VERY doubtful for Sunday...and little better for the Headingley game.
Looking at the way the Hampshire one was going this will not be much of a problem because the CC1 push seems to have stalled through a pairing of poor luck on the pitch and even poorer luck off it.
The Sunday game may well be our last tilt at the last windmill....
Poor luck and/or poor planning. Whether it was poor planning depends on whether or not there was any financial alternative to going into the season with no experienced cover for any position in the CC first XI?
I do not know enough about the finances to know whether or not there was an alternative but, if there was, then I think it is the case that planning was poor. After all, we knew Alf would be away. It was not exactly inconceivable that Craig K would get an international recall and it should never be the case that the notion that we would sustain injuries to first XI players should be considered inconceivable.
And I do realise that SCCC have done a very good job in recent years with injury prevention but, still, nobody can ever expect to be perfect in that regard.

I still don't understand why we passed on the opportunity to sign Thornely earlier in the season. He has scored well for the Unicorns this season, and could have been useful cover at this point.

Form is a great thing so why not gamble on sunday with Murali and Alf at 1 and 2. Arul is obviously struggling, and if Murali and Alf both perform half as well as they have done with the bat this week why not??

It will be a tough test for the boys tomorrow. It looks as if our strength will be our bowling looking at the line up.
One thing that is in our favour is that Durham will have spent over a week on their travels at the end of a long season. Lets send them home with a beating!

I think this may be the order if we win the toss and bat first. If they bat first and get a big score I would imagine Trego would have to go in first. The game may dictate changes in the order.

Pete opened with Marcus.That meant 2 potential quick scorers.For Pete to open with someone else puts all the pressure on him. There is no reason why Jones and Suppiah can't score 7 an over playing perfectly orthodox attacking strokes against opening bowlers. I shall continue to say-in the same way that OB wants spinners- that 4 scoring shots an over of 2 each gives 320 and you don't lose many games with that score on the board.
Having said that I must admit that Durham should be favourites tomorrow- and that cannot be a bad thing

I very much agree with your last sentence, GM.
In all of our finals and second places we have been favourites to win and that has an added pressure. Being second favourites and without our iconic player may help us to relax in a bizarre kind of way.

Confidence amongst our batsmen is liable to be low, Mark.
They were accused of a lack of application by the Director of Cricket last Saturday and a lack of mental strength by the coach after this week's game.
I think we will need to bowl particularly well to win.
I wouldn't be too shocked if we have tried to prepare a turning track...

I take your point AG but I was thinking of Pete being under pressure to score quickly. Jones and Suppiah are not there as the fast scorers so a 25 at a run a ball is a good result for them whereas going in first with a non fast scorer would give Pete the mind set of 30 off 15.

Totally agree with AGod and don`t really see the logic in dropping Tregs down a place after getting a score last week? Maybe promote Meschede and give him free reign as they tried earlier in the season? Jones,as well as he did last week in holding the innings together,did struggle to manouver the ball around and find the gaps so I suppose batting in the power play gives him the opportunity to play his shots and he may be better against quicker bowlers rather than spin so that may make sense, but the old adage "if it aint broke......."

Fantastic to see. I get the sense that one or two of the senior batsmen have become a little complacent in how secure their places are. Hopefully this might give them a shot in the arm - may well be some interesting selection decisions should we make the final.

Congratulations to Somerset, a thoroughly deserved win.
See what I mean about Durham being an erratic one day side? I said they could be absolutely brilliant or really awful.A really jittery start with the bat and they seemed to panic when the boundaries weren't immediately flowing, suicidal running from Stoneman to start the clatter of wickets, Muchall perhaps a bit unlucky, he made a great start to the season but was then dropped for poor form, always a mistake imo to bring him back for a semi final. Will Smith has just made a Championship hundred, and he's just the sort of calm, unflappable player we needed in that top order.
I thought we might just have made a competitive total thanks to the great man Benks with Blackie & Scotty supporting him nicely but the bowling from Claydon(apart from his first over) and Onions was almost unbelievably bad.
That though takes nothing away from the Somerset performance with bat and ball. Best of luck for the final.

I said they could be absolutely brilliant or really awful.A really jittery start with the bat and they seemed to panic when the boundaries weren't immediately flowing, suicidal running from Stoneman to start the clatter of wickets, Muchall perhaps a bit unlucky, he made a great start to the season but was then dropped for poor form, always a mistake imo to bring him back for a semi final. Will Smith has just made a Championship hundred, and he's just the sort of calm, unflappable player we needed in that top order.
I thought we might just have made a competitive total thanks to the great man Benks with Blackie & Scotty supporting him nicely but the bowling from Claydon(apart from his first over) and Onions was almost unbelievably bad.
That though takes nothing away from the Somerset performance with bat and ball. Best of luck for the final.

Would rather our boys had knocked off the runs properly but there can be no doubt that this is one case where D/L has got it unequivocally right.
Interesting to hear the Durham commentators (who seemed much more sensible this time around) talking about how THEIR team tends to choke on the big occasion! (Though none of them is saying they need to get Ponting in as captain.)

Brilliant win! Would have been easy to use the two recent defeats and injury list as an excuse not to turn up!
Well done Jones, Suppiah, Trego, Alf and Tango in particular for doing it when it mattered. An honorable mention to Craig on his bowling stint too.
The only worry was that our spinners were outdone by theirs (Blackie apart) pretty comprehensively on the day.

Not sure their spinners looked that good. Kartik was very disappointing but Blackwell, Breese and Borthwick bowled at a time when Somerset didn't need to force the pace. Breese was fortunate, shall we say, to have Hildreth given out.

Thanks mikeindex and Bobstan, I normally use cricket-match-special.com. It's a friendly site, well moderated. There is a fair bit of leg-pulling and banter ( about Lancashire and their dodgy pitches for example!) but it's all good-natured. Not many Somerset fans post there, I'd say the most active domestic discussions are on Hampshire & Durham.
A certain Middlesex 'supporter' familiar to many is there but unable to indulge in his usual antics.

Wickets looked like falling when their spinners were bowling. Trigger looked fortunate not to be lbw. James looked unfortunate too, but there were quite a few alarms.
Ours didn't look like taking wickets and were expensive too.

Commentators were guessing Suppiah for MoM - well as he batted, my choice would be between Trego and Benkenstein.
(I have no patience with the view that the finest individual performance in a match must automatically come from the winning side, particularly as by definition performances for the losing side often come against stiffer opposition).

Is it a worry that this great performance came in a game when, for the first time in a major match for ages, we weren't favourites to win. Echoing sentiments on this thread before the game started, it might have suited us to be underdogs - so what happens if we're built up to be favourites again in the next fortnight?

Today’s photos.
A good win a shame about the weather.
The fielding started out brilliantly a few errors later on but who cares when we win, Ian Blackwell got one of the biggest cheers when he came out to bat and when fielding people were having a bit of fun with him.
Arul Suppiah showed what he can do as an opener in one day matches, a bit of a near miss in the photo off the bowling of Paul Collingwood.
Another player who played well today Chris Jones, in the photo it looked like the ball came off of his bat hit the pad and trickled onto the stumps, my view was obscured by the wicketkeeper when the ball hit the stumps.
Alfonso Thomas got his Yorkers working today even Steve Kirby managed a few; this was Benkenstein digging one out off Thomas.
M Claydon played what looked like a loose shot and was bowled by Steve Kirby.
M Stoneman was run out by Chris Jones it looked like either batsman could have been run out.
Craig Meschede look well pleased as do the crowd behind him after he caught Phil Mustard off the bowling of Peter Trego.

I've stopped off half way back to Geordie land and my Somerset tie will be worn with pride after today's splendid performance.I'm beginning to rate Mr Jones with bat and in the field.

I heard today that Arul had a bit of a strop Monday at not being further up the order, threw his toys (kit) around on the balcony, literally!
He certainly put his case forward today for a spot higher up the order. I've always felt that Arul could do the job Compton does at 3 or 4 when we have a fully fit batting line up.
My ideal top 8 would be, Tres, Kies, Tregs, Arul, Hildy, Jos, Meschede, Lewis

Yes Rodders, in a place called Bragg Creek,near Calgary.
Great place to live, apart from no cricket !
Still, will be over next week, so hope to see some of the Lancs game.
