Bangalore and Royal Challengers as the opposition. After a great double over the Kolkoata crew and a washout against South Australia we find ourselves in a p;ossible semi-final position if we can win this one tonight. I doubt Daniel Vetorri, Chris Gayle, Dilshan and Dirk Nannes are all that keen for that result so we'll have to be on the money again.

Alf wins the toss and puts the Challengers in. He thinks there is something in this pitch and from the look of Vetorri, he's probably thinking the same. The side is slightly different because of the return of the boys from the Windies - Craig Kieswetter and Jos Buttler - plus George Dockrell from Dublin.. The full eleven is;
Kieswetter, Trego, van der Merwe, Hildreth, Buttler, Compton, Suppiah, Kartik, Thomas, Kirby, Dockrell
This is a biog game and if we win one of our last two games we are definitely in with a chance in this tournament. However the opening partnership of Gayle and Dilshan can do real damage so Thommo and Kirbs try to keep it tight in the first two. Gayle is going from it from ball one but only gets 5 off the skipper's first. Dilshan takes on SK and nearly loses his wicket as Buttler nearly scoops a difficult swirling catch on the boundary. Unfortunately he does not take hold and a second catch - almost as difficult goes down in Pete Trego's first. By the end of 3 the opposition has 32 and have weathered the intial storm. 39 after 4 sees RvdM on to Dilshan who is doing some damage. He gets turn immediately so MK and the spinners need to take heart. He nearly gets him with ball 2 as well before he bowls him around his legs trying to sweep with ball 3. 38 for 1 after four and a half.
Kohli is the next man in and they have 44 at the end of 5. Unfortunately though, that man Gayle is still there and although Alf bowls the 6th and RvdM takes the 7th they pass 50 at the start of the 6th and have 63 by the time Kartik takes over for the 8th. Gayle is still going for it and he is soo dangerous in this kind of mood. This is also a couldron of home supporters for the Royals..as Nick Compton says, there aren't many Somerset T shirts in the crowd but there is a lot of crowd!! MK holds Gayle and he manages a mere 3 to move the score to 66.
I pop out for tea and arrive back with Bangalore on 162 at the start of the 17th and Pete is back on having gone for over 40 off his two overs so far. This looks like an immense scare and a huge target for the boys to chase because Gayle is still there on 80 at 171 for 3 with Garwal, his new partner, also looking to make runs. The West Indian helps take another 15 off the luckless Trigger and moves towards what seems an inevitable 100 and a total off 20 that will be somewhere around 200 - probably the other side of it!
Thommo takes the 18th at 184 fr 3 and meets Garwal in fine form as well. His fourth ball however is fired straight into Arul's midriff and Bangalore 'slump' to 188 for 4 which become 184 for 5 as Gayle gives AS his third catch of the night with the very next ball. That is how the 18th ends.
Vetorri and the other Karthik are now in, both new and both facing RvdM. It seems it wasn't the spinners night and poor old PThas gone for 50 off 3. But Bangalore can't get moving as their New Zealand captain is run out on a ball fired back by James Hildreth - poor communication and 191 for 6. Reolof goes for 6 and they need 7 to hit 200 by the end of 20.
Alf takes the last one but full tosses the first and is very lucky that the ball goes straight to the fielder for 1. He 'dots' the second but is sixed on the third by Karthik and 200 arrives. They finish on 206 and we have a huge ask on our hands!!
The Reply
Pete and Craig stride out to start the reply and face Dirk Nannes for the first over. Pete manages 2, Craig gets nothing off the first 4 balls while Dirk gives us another 7 in wides and leg byes. Cheers Dirky boy! Aravind takes the second and Craig has yet to face a ball. We have 10 so we are up with the rate!!
19 after 2 keep us in the hunt and comes with a first boundary from the bat courtesy of Craig. However, the third over, Nannes' second is a much better one and we only get runs off the last couple of balls to take us to 29 needing 178 from 101 balls. Every dot ball makes the job harder and no batsman tonight is going to have the chance to get settled before hitting out to get the two/three boundaries per over that are needed. Nevertheless, Craig is up for it and hits a huge six off the third ball of the 4th to keep us in the hunt.
Vettori is on but Kieswetter goes, caught behind at 42 from the second ball of the 5th. In comes RvdM who puts the Bangalore captain into the stands immediately. But that is all she wrote and it's 48 for 2 by the 5th ball with Hilda taking over from vdM who is also caught behind. Big shot makers gone and a large job for these two men to keep us in this game as Vetorri finishes at 48 and ushers in another slow man in Mohammed to provide the 6th over. At which point I lose TV access and miss us going over 50 in the 6th leaving only 150 more needed off 81 balls.
The 7th is another from Vettori and it is starting to get difficult to get the ball to the boundary. However we are still going for it and reach 69 by the start of the 9th bowled by Kohli (useful player this one).
It's 92 halfway through through the over and 102 two balls later off Mr Gayle. So we are halfway at halfway - or as near as makes little difference. We are hitting at 10.2 and we need to hit at 10.5 so we are very much still in this game.
109 after 11 and you feel that while Pete is there and Jos is still in the wings we still have a say in this one. Unfortunately, James' evening is overas Nannes has him caught behind for 15 at the end of the 11th. Vetorri returns for the 12th and Pete goes past 50 (54 off 32) as Buttler joins him. 92 needed from 47 balls.
Nannes has unfortunately got his eye in and the 13th over is very tight and we on,y take 3 from it. It gets worse as Buttler is caught for 4 off 12 balls from Aravind's first ball of the 14th. It is now getting very hard to see us winning this one. Nick is the next man in. Wouldn't have been my choice but he did well in the last game at the death so he may be a good choice to partner the man with the score.
It's 128 for 4 at 15 and a mountain for the two Somerset guys to climb, 77 runs off 25 balls is surely too much to get. It's 3 a ball for heaven's sake. However, completing and getting close may be important in the lng run as long as we can beat the Warriors latewr this week.
And Pete goes at 133. A valiant effort by the Man from WSM and with Arul taking his place we now look to keep in this one until the end. Ther first ball of the 18th does for him though and we have a tough rearguard action to work through. We need 72 and Alf is in at number 8 to face his share of the 17 balls left.
And then I lose contact completely and have to continue from the Cricinfo scorecard which tells me that we reach 155 without further loss. A loss by 51 runs, the biggest in this CL tournament but a decent effort when faced with a huge target. Not a great total bowling display tonight with George and Pete taking some hammer and the Challengers just got away.
NOW the last game is a big one and we need to win it or we are probably coming home before the semis.

Now we're down to the important stuff.
A win against Bangalore and we're almost there.
If Bangalore beat SA after that we're definitely through.
A win against warriors on wednesday guarantees progression ,so there's life after tommorrow if we were to lose.
No rain tommorrow please! That will do us no favours as we would still need to win against warriors.
Hope the wicket is better than the one in Chennai.shocking for T20.
Will assume at full strength tommorrow.Good luck to the boys and keep our indian summer going until next weekend.

Don't agree about the Chennai wicket being shocking. I think it gives those who aren't enormous hitters a chance to contribute. This game isn't played on a standard plastic pitch. Sure we all love to see some huge shots but I like to see the chess game occasionally too.

Comparing T20 to chess is like mentioning English rugby union and entertaining in the same breath.
Talking of which, isn't it good to see the English boys grabbing the "wrong" headlines from the Taffs for a change, I think Mr Tindall may well have been caught by the googlies this time.
A shame, he seems such a nice chap.

Agree with you Streeter. Shocking was not probably the best description of the wicket.I just think it puts too much emphasise on the toss even though THe Aussies won today in the first game.

Would have to agree. "Ruthless, pitiless, joyless," was how Eddie Butler described it in the Observer.
Then again, it may be that there is something a little wrong with the sport itself when a team can win playing in ultra-dull fashion. World Cup Rugby looks like it is back where the Premiership was when George Graham's Arsenal were winning things playing their brand of rubbish (except of course, England won't win the whole thing playing that way, hopefully.)

The sad thing, for the rugby watching world, is that England could win playing that brand of turgid rugby.....they've done it before.
As I've also said, this is the modern way, it's a results driven business....but at least in days gone by they've acted like decent human beings off the field.
The recent revelations have been shocking, they really have brought shame on the English game, on the sport as a whole.
Anyway, what time does this T20 stuff kick off?

The forecast seems to have been for plenty of heavy rain this morning (Indian time) but the afternoon & evening forecast does not appear quite as bad as the shocking morning one. Still, it looks like there is a signficant chance of another wash-out if forecast is to be believed.

BJ - the Welsh are hopeless, compared with England. First, they can't run straight. Second, even if they do occasionally manage to run straight, they are hardly ever able to run into an opposition player. Third, they keep throwing the ball to someone else, as if they are scared of being tackled - there's even a Welsh word for this cowardly manoeuvre ("passing"). Fourth, they are so predictable when they place the ball on the ground and kick it - their only tactic seems to be to kick it between the posts, whereas Wlikinson has, in recent years, learned so many other variations.

Big Jim,is it co-incidence that both Somerset and Wales RU seem to specialise in "Glorius Failure" when it really matters?! I personally would rather follow a team that knows how to win when not playing well and can score a try when it matters (as England did against Scotland) compared to Wales running in loads of scores againgst Fijis second string pack and then not taking their chance to beat SA earlier in the tournament when they had them on the ropes.....
As Somerset play entertaining cricket and don`t win anything I get frustrated as it is all well and good entertaining people but it all goes to waste if you don`t produce the goods when it really really matters.This is something Somerset cricket supporters and Wales RU followers know all too well and I would much rather Somerset play the England RU way with dull,tactical cricket knowing how to win and saving the entertainment for when it is really required......
Fingers crossed for today and come on lads this is the trophy we will win as I can`t be there for the final!!.....

I think the English style of play, and I don't want to call it negative, but I shall, is much better suited to tournament play....would anybody dare to suggest that they are better team than NZ?......henceforth their ability to progress to the latter stages, and ultimately win tournaments.
Plus, don't forget, England can draw from a massive resource of players, I forget the actual numbers involved, so let's face it, if anybody is underachieving it's the Orcs....sorry, but that be a fact.

Rugby is NZ to lose. If they go out, all the other teams can beat each other on their day, even England. Don't forget Scotland played dour and unsuccessful rugby but don't seem to have got the criticism England got, The spanner in England's works is you need to kick your goals in tight matches.

If we were going to have one poor game then this was the one to do it in. To be honest how poor was it - I don't think anyone can bowl to Chris Gayle when he's in tha sort of mood. I wouldn't heap blame on Jos for failing to take a tricky catch. Onwards and upwards.

I know its easy to be wise after the event but I think Somerset missed a trick by not batting first. Whatever target they set, RCB would've had to chase down in maybe 15-16 overs to improve their NRR enough to put them in with a chance of qualifying. Of course, if Gayle had then done what he did today, they may well have succeeded. But others may have gallen in trying. Ah well.

Gayle leaves his bext for India and has done so for a couple of years now. He was absolutely devastating at times in the IPL last year and no-one could handle him.
It's a shame that the first thing Jos has to do on a field in India is deal with a swirling high one from the man but it probably ought to have been caught.
155 in 20 chasing is not too shabby people but Pete hasd to do well with the bat after that hammering with the ball. George? Well he should have more experience in this kind of stuff but to be honest the form from our other trips still suggests that this is Max's fiueld of expertise but we sent him home. Those figures were the difference to be honest. Had we been chasing 180 with a little time to breath then I don't think we would have been too far away.
Just remember people that few expected us to be here - this is all bonus and we've already acquitted ourselves far better than last time we were in this.

Tough old game! Just our luck to run into Gayle when he comes off - yes, there was the early chance but it's not like we dropped a sitter. Even with 7 or 8 bowlers in the team, no-one could contain Gayle tonight. Kirbs was excellent, as was Trigger with the bat.

Nannes gave Jos a real working over and really hurried PT at the start. It was the pressure of not scoring of Nannes that got Jos out IMO. Vettori then squeezed us out of the game sadly.

I screamed at Alf to say bat when he won the toss but obviously not loudly enough. Jos' catch was not easy, but could have been held. Gayle would have battered anyone tonight I think, but 155 is no disgrace-well played Pete. As Alf said, it wouldn't be Somerset if we did things the easy way. If we win Wednesday on we go. If we loses Wednesday then well played anyway lads.

Unfortunately it is hindsight, but clearly the team spirit built up in the first three matches was bound to be effected by the pre-selected removal of three 'mini stars' in Snell, Max and Gregory. The enforced choices made in mid-september were unfortunate. I still don't quite understand why the three sent home couldn't have been kept on site even if they couldn't be part of the official party - why couldn't they have had their stay paid by SCCC and they could have got passes for WDP and WMN or even just as spectators.

So did I. But I actually think I was wrong to have done so. You look at those first few overs of the Bangalore innings .. as Alf rightly observed, even Gayle played fairly conservatively because there was plenty in it first up. We could easily have lost 3 or so wickets in the first couple of overs from Nannes bowling on that fresh deck at the start of the match.

I was a bit shocked and dismayed to see Kirby in for Gregory. But Kirby was superb!! So, with hindsight, Kirby playing was a good thing BUT Gregory should also have been retained. Spin and medium pace was cannon fodder on that track, for most of the match.

I think our attack with 4 left armers was a bit predictable and Gayle even admitted in his interview it made it easier for him. Don't think Arul bowled right enough, but that would be after his efforts in the KKR game.
Personally I have no idea what Barrow is doing there and even Dibble to an extent. Both hardly plyaed for us in 1 dayers last season and Max did and he is the one being sent home!!! Im not saying Max would have changed anything but his variety, excellent fielding would have been good to have.
On reflection our trouble last season was the constant chopping and changing of the team due to IPL, international and Lion call-ups and injuries. I think it affected us more than most. Consistency of team selection (Lancs are the prime example) is what bring most success in my view. Looking ahead for us I cant see much changing on that front. Maybe after the hit and giggle is over we can get back home and start planning and building (as Andy Nash put it) properly for next year to see what can be done to alleviate it somewhat.

I can only think that Lewis isn't fully fit yet AG because I also questioned the decision to keep Steve and send Lewis home.
But presently it is difficult to question his inclusion in the side. He wouldn't be the first bowler from last night you would consider 'resting' or even the second or third.
Maybe he has learned to adapt his game. Maybe his next game may not be as good but you'd back him presently as a T20 asset.

First things first, how many other county fans are sitting on their sofa's watching their team on TV at least 5 times in a couple of weeks? And with a game to go, still in with a good chance of making the S/F ?

Having had food troubles in India myself (I don't wish to go into the sordid details), I can only wish Lewis luck. On the other hand, in my case it resulted in a much reduced waistline, which was a real bonus. I don't suppose Lewis needs to lose weight at his age, though, so let's hope he can get back to full fitness for the next game.

Yep, doc, any monies are likely to go to the players direct. That is IF the BCCI pay up. There are apparently stories about the likes of Ramnaresh Sarwan etc not having been paid for IPL contracts.
